Java "lacks" a build-in very good "IDE for everything". IMHO thats the main reason to use Eclipse. Coding own apps with it, well.. How many apps except of eclipse are there (have long not looked)?

Users forgive winamp etc quite easy. And reblets are more in that area, special purpose small guis. winamp has play/forward,stop, reblet has read/scroll/send.
