[!AltME] Discussion about AltME

I say this to myself occasionally. It means "build more GUI, then
things will be easier".
Qtask with a rebol front-end requires a fairly advanced rebol GUI.

yes, I can imagine that, especially for the calendar/time etc.
The difficult part to decide is - I would prefer View (rich client),
but being in Reichart's position, I would go with the web too ....

Anton, I see managing styles on the canvas as the challenge -- we
lack a killer dynamic layout engine.
And then there's distribution (I'd still advocate my web-launch approach,
instead of or complimentary to the plugin)

Chris - what is the main difference between a web-launch and plug-in
aproach? Isn't plug-in a better deployment way?
Chris

Web-launch was an idea I'd posted here (another group) about a browser
interpreting a Rebol script, then presenting metadata and a large
icon to launch the script. I don't think the plugin is better.
It's right in some situations, but I'd prefer in most cases to launch
my reblet. I may change that opinion if the Rebol plugin were as
seamless, if not as ubiquitous, as the Flash plugin.

Chris - that is the idea, to be seamless in its deployment and functionality
- sadly the reality is different ....

Exactly -- whereas web-launch is comparitively low-hanging fruit.

it seems to be back to normal...
I rebooted my machine... a laptop I rarely need to reboot.

No such luck for me - still 53 empty conversations on my Windows/XP
installation. Though I guess most of them haven't had a post for
a long, long time.

of course, that is ok ... you have set threshold of messages loaded.
If e.g. you set it to 500, then it is 500 posts in total, not per
group .... (or so I think :-)

I had some transient wierdness in the Blog Chat group recently......I
can only scroll back as far as Thu to my message starting <MVS/TSO?
CICS? >

Petr: It says "per chat room" on the settings page so I'm not certain.
Mine was set at 1000; I've changed it to 10,000 temporarily to see
if that makes any difference.

Conventional wisdom suggests the higher the setting, the more likely
you are to experience the "recycle" crash.
PeterWood

Isn't the recycle crash a thing of the past?
Setting to a large number does make switching between groups tediously
slow.
Actually If my memory serves me correctly the number of posts settings
only affects how many are displayed and shouldn't affect synchronisation.

I'd like to think it is a thing of the past...But as far as I know
all we applied was the low-count workaround.

The main feature that needs to be added to AltME is prevention of
a post being lost if the Internet connect happens to be broken.
This happens often for me as the phone lines here are very unreliable.
The user should be able to work off-line, and his post automatically
be sent when he log on.

When I want to send a longish post, I write it with my preferred
editor and then I just copy it to here.)

Please always sumit complaints to Feedback...even if it is the same
complain. If you use that chanell, it ensures it is logged, and
in the case of repeats, counted.

why is there is a per file size limit for the shareing folder?
I could almost understand a 2 gig historical limit -- but this is
under 6Meg

?
is it settable per world
I don't find an option
Maxim

I think it has to do with the fact that many service providers will
timeout an http port xfer even if its still working. and that amounts
to about 6MB . I have that kind of effect with gmail. if I try
to download something larger than 3MB it fails... because of the
length it takes to download with my phone modem
it could be that the server which this world is running on enforces
this timeout somehow.
but these are just assumptions... someone might know for sure.

Yup.

yup as in you know why?
Tomc

[1996x3]
it is not that. I run the server and it has excelent connectivity
(multiple T3 ) I move many gigs of data with amazing regularity
Max if we were interested in being limoted by the lowest common denominator
would we be here at all?
so R who is to blame for hardcoding a filesize into altme fileshareing?
Qtask is all about accountability should be a gimmi.

maybe it's a limitation .. if you make the files too large, it kills
messaging??

I just reset that to how I want it :-)
