Fastest way to see new messages

 [1/9] from: Carl:rebol at: 10-Jul-2003 12:40

Just a reminder: The fastest way to see new messages to this email list is to view them a http://cobalt.reboltech.com/~lister Messages are posted shortly after arrival at the server, so they don't suffer from the outgoing email delays. With regard to those email delays, it appears that they are the result of getting bottlenecked on slow responses from other servers. For example right now there are six sendmail (mail delivery) subprocesses that are probably going to timeout in a few minutes due to delays: 32663 ? S 0:00 sendmail: MAA21791 brainbyte.com.: user open 2216 ? S 0:00 sendmail: MAA02215 m1.dnsix.com.: user open 2776 ? S 0:00 sendmail: server fallback01.mail.atl.earthlink.net [2 2805 ? S 0:00 sendmail: server fallback01.mail.atl.earthlink.net [2 2890 ? S 0:00 sendmail: server fallback02.mail.atl.earthlink.net [2 3177 ? S 0:00 sendmail: MAA03175 brcceb.bariloche.com.ar.: user ope Those six take half of the current allocation of sendmail delivery daemons. Depending on the state of the connection, some of these may not timeout for up to 10 minutes. In the meantime a few more incoming messages may have been received, queuing another 500-2000 outgoing messages. And that's without even considering the bounce and spam traffic that's also being handled. Over the last few years, the situation has gotten a lot worse due to spam. IMHO, email is dead. Systems like IOS or AltME are the future for private communication. For public communication, maybe we should add a Blog to rebol.com? I investigated it last year, but was too busy to put it into operation. Another method might be to add a Web form interface to this discussion list. -Carl

A blog would be great for publishing RT related news. Making updates available in RSS would allow us to use news aggregators and obviate the need to constantly check the RT site. One solution to circumvent outgoing smtp from RT and it's related pitfalls, is to continue to accept posts through email and\or a web-based form (or even a Reblet) and then make posts available with RSS. I guess that has already been proposed - creating an RSS feed for the new web archive. Although, you need to take into account the bandwidth consumed by the 500 to 2000 or whatever the number is of aggregators that are polling your server every few minutes. I find sites like the one below to be very useful, but this is more of a collection of individual blogs - so I'm not sure if it can spark any ideas. http://www.markme.com/mxna/index.cfm Also, I'm not sure that any aggregators exist that can gather related posts and display them in a threaded view. Maybe a nice little Rebol based news reader would be in order. Ted

One problem with the growing list of different means of discussing REBOL is that communication starts to get fragmented. Spam sucks, but I don't think email's dead yet. Who can afford to turn their email off and tell those in their address list to use software X, Y, or Z instead? (No matter how much they'd like to;)

I'd recommend http://www.livejournal.com/ as quite good for blogging. (It has a GNU license - see http://www.livejournal.com/doc/server ) Can be used to create private sections, communities and has RSS support. There's also quite a few third-party front-ends to it, (as apposed to its browser front-end), though none written in REBOL yet.

I'd call that useful, but not an alternative to a blog. -- Carl Read

I'm not sure if it's what you mean, but http://www.livejournal.com/ has "Friends" pages, where posts from any selected LJ blog, community or RSS feed appear in the order they're created. So LJ users choose exactly what blogs and such they wish to keep up with. -- Carl Read

There is a Rebol blog here: http://www.compkarori.com/vanilla/ I've thought about a RSS feed, but haven't got round to it yet. -- Graham Chiu

Hi, well those two suffer one fundamental feature: Offline mode! I need to write messages offline and asynchron. Further I need threading to keep track of all communication. Therefore mailinglists are the most efficient form of communication. If this can be cloned, good! If not this is a major problem at least to me. We still have news, how about a news-server? I don't see a value in replacing existing technology just to use new technology. What do I gain? Robert

I don't like "Me too's", that said, ME TOO! Email may have some shortcomings, but for me it's still the best. Adding to what Robert stated, it is universially available: I can read it from any platform, I can go to any internet caf=E9 and read my email using a webmail service. Now show me how this is possible with IOS or AltME. Kind regards, Ingo Robert M. Muench wrote:

I second the motion ;-)

the reason I prefer the mail list is that I don't have time to track information in several methods or apps at a time. mailing lists are passive-aggressive... they ALL pop-up in the same mail box. I don't care its slow, I'm sure Carl will hate me for saying this, but I almost like the fact that the information trickles down at a reasonable rate. if we could have a mailling list send of all the discussions on alternative channels, then I'd subscribe to that. At least I get notified when new stuff appears and If I want to speak, then I'd just log on the discussion and post my stuff by whatever means... my two cents -max

rebol browser plug-in anyone? ;-) btw: Altme should be possible - no? It does not require you to install anything, just download, save and run ... but I understand your point ... -pekr-
