The tool gives you an editor to build hierarchical structures / layouts 
where you than can map given information criterias (Skills, Performance, 
...) into visual recognizable values (color, line width, ...).


We use this tool to visualize complex situations on one page. The 
values could be feed from a database or other source in real-time 
and the visualization will update immediatly.

Saphirion's Host-kit has been updated:

the writing. The publisher is BroadView (in China). The first edition 
will be 10K copies. has designed the book cover, and layout some

No it tells you if you solved the puzzle (green) and when you solved 
it but not with all 7 mirrors.

I thought about that too, label font color can be set, but I was 
afraid it would slow down the app. That is why I chose to build the 
extra mirrors as a seperate layer to show on top of the grid-layer 
and the unchangeble mirror-layer.

New version of the mirror game placed on same spot. Only on first 
screen the coloring doesn't work. See what happens if you comment 
the line before the last. Bold did not work for me either, could 
be the mac and font arial.

It is far from perfect yet, the code needs a lot of cleaning up but 
I would not wait much longer for you all to have a look at my REBOL 
solution to make a small chessboard application that gives all the 
possible legal moves so you can play a game according to the rules

As you might know, I wrote a R3 book in Chinese, trying to attract 
more people to the REBOL camp. It sells very well so far. But I would 
like to attract more than Just Chinese. So I decide to translate 
it into English and make the English Version free. It's a slide with 
320 Pages. This slide is colorful, beautiful, and easy to understand. 
I would like you guys to help me correct my English before I put 
it to the public. I would also like this gesture to make Carl feel 
the support and love from the community.

Hello, I'm writing a new version of Rebolide, with color syntax higlithing, 
using another rebol script (area-tc) with perfect syntax higlithing.

However I'm not good as you and I can't understand how make this

each comment) and I noticed that most of them contain the phrase 
"Hi Carl". I was hoping that I'll find out from them what further 
steps should be taken to save the future of REBOL, but it seems that 
as usual I have to come up with a solution myself.

So, here it is.

I decided to open source REBOL.


Choice of license is very difficult because there are many kinds 
of them. I examined the majority of them, and none meets my needs. 
They are overloaded and too complicated. The only thing I can do 
in this situation is to write my own license. I name it ... Rebolense.

Creating a license is not an easy task, but is necessary.

I'll be working on it soon, so stay tuned. "

These are intended to implement pending improvements to R3, and eventually 
R2. Just R3 for now though.

Hi, I have added two scripts today on rebol.org. one is how I plan 
using the mysql driver from Nenad, the other one is reproducing the 
php script on http://www.alistapart.com/articles/succeed/to get 
well formed URL/URI 's and get rid of the ?id=99&stuff='idea' kind 
of links. 

It is not yet really finished for I haven't tested/thought about 
how this works with requesting the indexfile in subdirectories. Also 
if there are ideas how to store and reproduce articles from a database 
using one two or more keywords feel free to put them up.

Works similarly to my Twitter API script (a few OAuth differences 
here and there). You can download it, or run it in place (do/args 
... [...Settings...]). As with Twitter, you start with etsy/as and 
go through the authorization process.  It has a few example methods, 
and an open method - etsy/api-call - that can call (as far as I can 
tell) every api function. Will try to document at some point.

BTW To make own new model just click "New" button or ctrl+n, enter 
model name, focus the "root" node in editor and use "h" "v" or "l" 
keys to create horizontal/vertical clusters or leafs. For more shortcuts 
open the help window by clicking the "Help" button.

Yes, thanks. Have you looked into the opposite, having your program 
react to externally triggered suspend and hibernate events? Vista/7/2008 
has an api for that...

no.. I use it just to play music and turn my pc to sleep  when I'm 
already sleeping :-)

Ah, but that is exactly what the API is for. Programs are notified 
through the API that the system is about to shut down, whatever, 
and then those programs can save their running state and reload automatically 
after the restart and pick up where they left off. It happens for 
power failures too, if you have a UPS or laptop battery.

I have to curse you now, because time I should be working is being 
spent reading and playing. :-)

My English is not very good. Writing a book in English is very difficult 
for me. I might need to hire someone to help me translate it into 
English and make it an e-book. Good news is, my publisher is willing 
to let me put 1/3 of the books in slideshare or somewhere like that 
to share with others when the book is published. BTW. The book is 
about 330 pages.

I currently use R2 only in my projects, and training my team.

And I am not a REBOL guru like many people here, so I won't expect 
anyone here to learn anything from my book. It's a book for absolute 
beginners.

My plan is to make R3 at least a little bit popular in China, so

That's because font objects and other attribute objects are shared 
by widgets. It's one of the standard starter gotchas

OLEDB was never as fast as ODBC, but for maybe one version of SQL 
Server (2000, I think) it was promoted instead of ODBC. For every 
version before and since it has been better to use ODBC drivers. 
Starting with SQL 2008 they don't even make OLEDB drivers for SQL 
Server anymore.

For us, it's ODBC all the way. And we need to improve the ODBC drivers 
for REBOL.

ChristianE's open-source (yay!) R3 driver chokes on a different and 
larger set of datatypes than R2's, including working with datatypes 
introduced in 2000 that R2 chokes on, like float.

and did you try opendbx?

ChristianE implements an R2-like API in an R3 port model, and it 
just feels alien, though it does allow me to have more portable code 
between R2 and R3. This helps when i have to have a script extract 
data in R2 because it needs to get text or numeric type data, but 
then close and call itself in R3 to parse that data. My %rebol.r 
is R2 and R3 compatible.

I figured out a way to make an R3-like ODBC API, and have an R2-like 
API emulated when you try to use it in an R2-like way. But then I 
ran out of time, was assigned to other projects for a while.

Yup, that must be an old quote, from back when they were promoting 
OLE DB so your code would be non-portable. They don't do that anymore. 
Now their new ODBC stacks in Vista and 7 are better than OLE DB.

Like the nchar and nvarchar types. OpenDBX converts those types to 
ASCII, then R3 would need to convert them back to Unicode.

If you knew C, then you could add the nchar, and nvchar support

and windows support is not ready yet

Not by me. And I use R3, almost never R2.

Yup. You should see what they have in store for SQL Server 2012. 
It can be run on a fully command line OS, managed remotely entirely 
through PowerShell scripting. And you can do PowerShell scripting 
of MS servers from Linux clients too, reportedly.

using rebol's ODBC interface, is there a way to get the names of 
the columns in the last select query?  sometimes, we do not provide 
the columns (select * from table) , so relying on assumptions to 
match return values and their columns is quite dangerous.

another example is retrieving the db metadata.  it would be nice 
to be able to know what columns do what from the returned data directly 
instead of assuming their order (which can change from one db version 
and provider to another)

I used 'columns and 'tables with R2 on SQL Server, it does work well.

I'm interested in creating a rebol associative db. Terry, I know, 
was talking about one such back in May last year (i think he called 
it rocketdb) - but apart from the altme logs and something on a redis 
google group, i cannot find anything. Does anyone know whether he 
released something or how i could contact him?

An associative database would be fun to have in REBOL. The 'map data 
structure in R3 replaces 'hash, and is supposed to be better.

There have been some linkups between REBOL and the relavance associative 
database, but nothing much has come of it.

I think this would be the start of something superb. If we can build 
a SPARQL like query interface on top of an associative db in rebol, 
we could simply point it to any of the open data initiatives and 
then go on the ride of a lifetime!

I wouldn't bet on MAP! very much (yet?). While it's very nice concept, 
lot of functionality is missing and what's implemented is buggy. 
OTOH it's nice and pretty fast.

Arnold, I just know enough to get myself connected so these instructions 
might not be too good. As Endo and I are suggesting, perhaps you 
can only accept connections from 127.0.0.1 (localhost). So, you have 
to Grant privileges to the user from your IP. 

Go to http://whatismyipaddress.comand then click on "IP details." 
You will find "Hostname." It is that hostname that you will grant 
privileges to along with the user such as  [user'-:-'hostname]. I imagine 
right now it only accepts [user'-:-'localhost]

I guess my hosting provider is not supporting the GRANT options in 
database user screens and their supplied phpmyadmin. I think I have 
a trick on my sleeve though with a self installed phpmyadmin. No. 
More luck maybe tomorrow....

Hi I found something in the config.inc.php  file and documentation 
that says "$cfg['Servers'][$i]['AllowDeny']['order'] string
If your rule order is empty, then IP authorization is disabled."

There is a Plesk control panel where I can create databases and add 
users/passwords (but no GRANT options) and a webadmin which is a 
PHPMyAdmin screen, that is almost identical to my self installed 
phpMyAdmin 2.6.0-pl2

I have the above working on a server, and browsers I've tested do 
not seem to have any problem with the URL, but I'm wondering more 
at large, if there are issues with it, in general.


It will be used  from within applications (java, .net, php & rebol) 
much more than from users manually using it within a browser bar.

The iMatix guys use it for both zeromq stuff and wikidot.

R3 did some housecleaning in type convertion consistency, but it 
has some flaws left (and I expect we will keep finding new ones).

Hi, I am looking into OAuth. I see (and thank you a lot for this!) 
that Chriss Ross Gill created OAuth client part in the twitter library:

or anyone else know how much additional work would be needed to do 
the rebol OAuth server part ?

I don't think it'd be that difficult - most of the difficulty in 
the client was making sure all the hashing was correct, the rest 
is just storage and logic.

For the most part, authorisation is based the parameters of a request 
hashed with a private key.  The trickiest part I'd imagine is the 
initial authentication - providing a safe method for the end user 
to allow the client to obtain and use the key.

any tip for some session related function-set for REBOL CGI purposes? 
I am looking for the case, where Cheyenne is not an option, and need 
some simple stuff for sessions ....

I am not an expert but I have a lot of experience and also theory 
about various aspects of it because of making my apps grow (and helping

Some things I just take as is without proof, like the earth to be

REBOL 2 is no use to me because it would never run on Syllable, and 
REBOL 3 still only has a GUI for Windows and Amiga, so it hasn't 
been useful for me to make a VID frontend

Chris, I am stil figuring this out. I want bold/italic/(underline)/(em) 
paragrapphs separated with a blank line (easier to understand and 
no need to delete a routinely typed 'return'-key) h1/h2/h3 img (inline/left 
right center aligned) and a-href, only 1 level of bullits, and I 
think I can come along without numbered sections. I was thinking 
about mark-up delimiters on the beginning of the line like === ==+ 
==- ==* ==#   I kind of liked \note and /note or /code but everybody 
will forget if the first one will be fore or backslashed so I guess 
the indented version to produce code. Plus I want the markup to be 
from a css file. No need to make this within the script because the 
template/and a script can take care of where and which to link to. 
That's about it.

The structure of MD since v2 is a separation of scanner and emitter. 
'scan-doc will break text into a block of [style content] pairs. 
'gen-doc will take that block and turn it into something, most commonly 
HTML.


The features of your doc - using your ==+, ==#, etc. are in the spec 
of the parser. Loosely explained, the parser's rule 'resets' when 
it encounters a newline.  It defines a few paragraph types that copies 
chunks of text (including 'paragraph that consumes text AND single 
newlines).  The rest of the rule determines the paragraph style and 
expected paragraph type:

  "===" text-line (emit sect1 text)

Could just as easily be:

  "==+" paragraph (emit my-bold-paragraph para)



The way a document is presented is all in the emitter. Seems this 
is where you seem to be yearning for most control. My first motivation 
using MakeDoc was stripping it of any styles - I just wanted a minimum 
of HTML markup that could be embedded and properly moulded by CSS. 
In my script above, I iterate through the [style content] list and 
use 'switch to determine how to handle each, this should be sufficient 
for documents without any complexity. It's really then just a case 
of modifying the HTML that is emitted.

I tried to change the method without changing the URL when switching 
POST and GET. Didn't work. Anyway, not a problem.

I am new to Git. I'd like to use it (or something similar) to keep 
a distributed copy of a web app I am developing. I'd like copies 
on two local systems (laptop and desktop) with the possibility of 
sharing with another developer based far away and deploying the app 
on my web host.


I sort of get the concept (at least the part about commits, etc), 
but am not really sure how to keep everything in sync. Is it worth 
using a hosting service like GitHub or Bitbucket (I know that perhaps 
defeats the purpose) to assure availability or figuring out how to 
use the web host for this purpose?

To "keep everything in sync" with Git, you have have to do pairwise 
syncs. Each pairwise sync can be initiated from either side, the 
respective commands being "fetch" (from remote to local) and "push" 
(from local to remote).


If you want to keep many separate sites in sync, mediating the sync 
via a central host makes sense (as it avoids the exponential explosion 
of pairwise syncs).


If you have SSH access to your web host, using your web host for 
a central Git repository is trivial (assuming you have - or can get 
- Git installed on the web host).

I'm trying out BitBucket with Git for now, the control over who can 
update being for now the deciding factor.  I have the following setup

It's entirely probable that I'm using it naively and/or inefficiently, 
but so far I have the ME and BITBUCKET parts working just as I would 
have hoped. I'm pretty sure there's a million intricate parts to 
learn, but feel this is a good start. Am I overlooking anything obvious?

Does anyone know how I can pre-process an Apache2 configuration and 
store it in a single file?

To start some new discussions, 1) I like Squeak/Pharo Smalltalk's 
AIDA/Seaside systems. Hope to to practice them in realworld soon 
(creating a community site)... 2) I'm coding a new Oberon system 
 which will be able to do one of the following at once: a) interpret 
oberon b) translate oberon to x86 machine code c) translate oberon 
to javascript. This is a very long-term project, but I get excellent 
support from the oberoncore.ru community, and am actually making 
good progress. Current oberon project status is c++ sourcecode-based 
ssystem interprets oberon, interpreter has many temporary stubs.
