Graham 24-Sep-2008 [3387] | that's all we need :) |
Robert 24-Sep-2008 [3388] | If they release a PS3 version, I buy one :-) |
Pekr 24-Sep-2008 [3389] | Does PS3 licence allows to run different OS? |
Rebolek 24-Sep-2008 [3390] | You can buy PS3 with pre-installed Linux so I think yes. |
Geomol 24-Sep-2008 [3391] | Yes, there's even an "Install other OS" entry in the system menu on the PS3. That's how Linux is installed. |
Henrik 24-Sep-2008 [3392] | interesting |
Geomol 24-Sep-2008 [3393] | http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/osinstall.html |
Gabriele 25-Sep-2008 [3394] | They may need a license from Sony to make a OS disc though. (ie. pay them) |
Alan 26-Sep-2008 [3395] | one of the developers for OS 4.1 just got a PS3 so is in the process of port to the PS3 |
james_nak 26-Sep-2008 [3396] | NO WAY! That would be so cool (#2 to Rebol running on the PS3, mind you). |
Graham 26-Sep-2008 [3397] | Is OS4.1 runs on PS3, then REBOL will run .... |
Alan 28-Sep-2008 [3398] | true but minus a lot of the newer stuff ie. agg/etc |
Kaj 28-Sep-2008 [3399x2] | The Syllable Server press release was also accepted at LWN (originally Linux Weekly News): |

Oldes 29-Sep-2008 [3401x2] | Adobe Talks Open Source, Innovation and the Future of Flash http://www.eweek.com/index2.php?option=content&task=view&id=49706&pop=1&hide_ads=1&page=0&hide_js=1 |
removed the license restriction this year from the SWF format. So anyone can go create anything they want around that format, including a player if they want to
Pekr 29-Sep-2008 [3403] | ... this is old news, no? Besides that it is half-full cup. SWF is freed, Flash is not ... |
Oldes 29-Sep-2008 [3404x2] | It's said that the Flash Player will not be opensource and I understand why. |
Interesting is, that Adobe is working with the Chrome team and that MS is not is not a competitor.
Henrik 29-Sep-2008 [3406] | First privately developed space rocket has reached Earth orbit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To-XOPgaGsQ |
Geomol 29-Sep-2008 [3407] | Fantastic! |
Pekr 1-Oct-2008 [3408] | Nokia launches its own mobile toolkit platform, Linux plus Qt toolkit based: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080930-nokia-launches-linux-based-qt-extended-mobile-platform.html http://trolltech.com/products/device-creation/qt-extended/qt-extended-4.4-release |
BrianH 10-Oct-2008 [3409] | Dial 'M' for Microsoft's new programming language - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/10/dial_m_for_microsoft/ |
Pekr 10-Oct-2008 [3410] | The end of REBOL? |
BrianH 10-Oct-2008 [3411x4] | No, it sounds like we still have an opening. Those tools sound really complicated, overly so. Little cross-platform support too. |
too -> either | |
That M language is like a lot of languages coming from the MS camp lately - they only have meaning if you are a MS shop. They even say that the compiler for this language would be cross platform, but that since it only describes stuff that MS platform software does, the results would have no meaning without that MS software. I guess they aren't ever going to go after the Mono project now - they have figured out how to compete in a multi-platform world, so they don't have to squash the competition anymore.
Strangely enough, it is not that dissimilar from REBOL's strategy.
Pekr 10-Oct-2008 [3415] | yes, their tools are complex. I wish we would be faster in delivering though. We are still milles away from anything R3 usable .... |
BrianH 10-Oct-2008 [3416] | Let's switch groups. |
Pekr 13-Oct-2008 [3417] | OpenOffice 3.0 released ... |
Reichart 13-Oct-2008 [3418] | Been using OpenOffice on the EEE-PC, it is pretty cool... |
Pekr 13-Oct-2008 [3419x3] | Wasn't it a bit sluggish? |
One Czech IT news server reports, that whole Wikipedia is moving to Ubuntu LTS Linux servers. They used various Red Hats, Fedoras, etc., so they are unifying it ...
We are talking 400 servers here ...
Henrik 13-Oct-2008 [3422] | they're gonna wear out that poor Ubuntu installation CD :-) |
Robert 13-Oct-2008 [3423] | OO3 is very cool. Trying to get rid of Word and XLS. |
Pekr 13-Oct-2008 [3424x2] | Is that really a big change? Using 2.4 here. I thought it is mostly incremental change. Pity they did not remove JAVA from it - it is reported still being kind of sluggish ... |
btw - did not post http://www.openoffice.orglink here, as it seems being down ...
Chris 13-Oct-2008 [3426] | I guess they could use 400 Ubuntu servers too... |
BrianH 13-Oct-2008 [3427x2] | Petr, you can't remove Java from OpenOffice without rewriting Base from scratch (a good idea, but still). It is not Java that makes OpenOffice sluggish, it is the huge amount of C++ code. It's just too large. |
Algorithmic changes could help in theory, but modern office apps just do a lot of work, and it takes them time to do so.
amacleod 13-Oct-2008 [3429] | I felt OO2 was too bloated...A little SLow. |
Maarten 13-Oct-2008 [3430] | Reichart, the EEE is great, isn't it? My wife teaches, and she uses it for short presentations and writing reports during the breaks. I think it saves her an hour a day - she wouldn't have used a laptop any bigger (and this one is pink...lol). I always joke she is the most Linux-savvy user in the house! |
Reichart 13-Oct-2008 [3431] | Wasn't it a bit sluggish? Yes, but it is a tinny computer for $300 (the price of a PDA). It works well enough for travel. My wife is the one using it, but I played with it a bit. I live on a laptop that is a bit larger (not much though) The Fujitsu P8020, and is Almost 10x the price. |
Pekr 14-Oct-2008 [3432x3] | Microsoft releases Silverlight 2, so it is here, no more a beta .... http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/081013/aqm522b.html?.v=1 |
... now my question is - where is my R3, and where are our planned View kernel advancements? Cyphre did not touch View kernel for more than one year ....
We launched Silverlight just over a year ago, and already one in four consumers worldwide has access to a computer with Silverlight already installed, - that is how fast competition is .....
Henrik 14-Oct-2008 [3435x2] | Is Silverlight really our competition? |
I thought we aimed higher than that.
