[Syllable] The free desktop and server operating system family

Graham 3-Sep-2005 [151] | Taygeta has a native forth tcp/ip stack. |
Volker 3-Sep-2005 [152x3] | syllable: will this work? |
http://www.other-space.com/sub/?section=Installing_Syllable&tutorial=Installing_From_Boot_Floppies
But not public? | |
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [155] | The boot floppies are old. They may not contain the unzip executable that you need to unpack the Syllable base package. You may be able to extract unzip from the base package and add it to the floppies, or put it on a FAT partition and mount that from the floppies |
Volker 3-Sep-2005 [156x3] | (taygeta tcp i mean) |
Can i install an old syllable and upgrade that?
I like to walk thru walls..
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [159x2] | You could, but it would be messy, especially the last upgrade to 0.5.7. And you may not find out that newer Syllables don't run on your machine until you upgrade |
The live CD is really the easiest way to get going
Graham 3-Sep-2005 [161] | Taygeta's is based upon BSD socket interface, but they recommend that if the host already provides a stack, it is only necessary to write the inteface. |
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [162x2] | Did you find the base zip and the floppies yet? |
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=55553&package_id=50546
Graham 3-Sep-2005 [164] | Volker is looking for 360k floppies... |
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [165x2] | Oh, right... |
I have stacks of 130K floppies for him...
Volker 3-Sep-2005 [167] | Including a machine to use them? :) |
Graham 3-Sep-2005 [168] | I suspect he is waiting for Blue Ray to be released. |
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [169] | Stacks of Atari 8-bits, yes |
Volker 3-Sep-2005 [170x2] | then forth would make really sense. |
Lets make a computer-museum.
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [172x2] | I have one upstairs |
It's boxy, but good :-) | |
Volker 3-Sep-2005 [174x2] | :)) |
Do you know how booting works? if i extract the cd to hd and fidle with lilo, can i then boot something?
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [176x2] | Follow the install instructions. You have to install Syllable's version of GrUB |
If you want to boot with something else, like LiLo, you have to install GrUB in the Syllable partition instead of the Master Boot Record, and chainload to there from LiLo
Graham 3-Sep-2005 [178] | how does the reboot time for syllable compare with other os's? Does it make it viable to run as a server? |
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [179] | You don't extract the CD, you extract the base zip archive |
Graham 3-Sep-2005 [180] | windows 2003 takes forever to reboot |
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [181] | Is reboot time the criterium for a server? :-) |
Graham 3-Sep-2005 [182x3] | I read once the US Navy ran Amiga 3000s as they rebooted so quickly. |
yep, very important. | |
If an EM pulse knocks out the PCs everywhere, the one to reboot the quickest wins :)
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [185] | Syllable boots in about ten seconds and shuts down in a few, so reboot time would be about fifteen seconds plus the time the machine takes to initialize and get to the boot loader |
Graham 3-Sep-2005 [186x3] | What was the problem with porting C# that you write about? |
I believe doc is still working on it.
R# ... | |
Kaj 3-Sep-2005 [189] | The problem is that Doc stopped working on it |
Graham 7-Sep-2005 [190x4] | there's a problem with the live cd site http://www.syllable-livecd.info/ Permission not grated to view the home page. |
And there's no one in the torrent swarm.
Hmm. The Atheos site is worse .. none of the links work for me.
Wow. Azureus downloaded the live cd for me while I was away at dinner!
Pekr 7-Sep-2005 [194x2] | Azureus - very good Java based client with all stuff needed - auto-updting etc., nice and responsive GUI. I wonder if REBOL would handle such app :-) |
Except networking I am sure it would do so ...
Kaj 7-Sep-2005 [196x2] | The live CD site and the other Scandinavian sites are down due to a double hard disk failure |
What AtheOS site are you trying? The original atheos.cx domain and site are hijacked by some thug selling drugs. Our archive of the original site was on the Scandinavian server, so it's down
Graham 7-Sep-2005 [198] | I think you guys are making the cost of entry too high. |
Kaj 7-Sep-2005 [199] | How so? |
Graham 7-Sep-2005 [200] | the iso image is compressed with bz2, and now I have to find a japanese web site that has lzarc to decompress the bloody thing |
