Kaj 16-Jul-2007 [1040] | I believe Ladislav could use the Yukon driver :-) |
Alan 16-Jul-2007 [1041] | dled the Vmware, when installed/run will let you know |
Kaj 16-Jul-2007 [1042] | Cool |
Alan 16-Jul-2007 [1043x2] | ok ran it and looks better than the others BUT there is no mnt dir ? I was going to use a console and mount but have no idea how to mount a device the os does not see ?does Syllable not have that option yet or am I missing some thing :( |
and I assume that drag and drop will not working using VmPlayer ? Thing I tried with an older version and did not work
Kaj 17-Jul-2007 [1045x8] | / is the mount dir. :-) |
There is no /mnt dir as such. But Linux often uses a /media directory as well, for the actual mount points, although they could also be anywhere else. Like Unix, mountpoints in Syllable can be made anywhere you want them. But the mount utility of the desktop (click right in the Media folder) just mounts disks in the root /
You should know that the root directory in Syllable is virtual. It is stored in RAM, so it is not persistent across reboots
You mount media from the /dev hierarchy, for example:
mkdir data | |
mount /dev/disk/ata/hda/1 data
How do you mean, drag and drop with VMPlayer? Integration with Syllable drag and drop, so you can drag and drop from the host system into Syllable and the other way around? No, such integration has not been done
We do have a special VMWare video driver
Alan 17-Jul-2007 [1053x2] | re:drag and drop, yes that is what I meant, ie drag from a host partition to a "virtual" Syllable dir guess the easiest way to get graphics/sounds to Syllable is via email or a web page. The reason for this is to test the graphics/sound apps in Syllable but since it comes with no sound/video files is the only way to test |
on Mandriva right now so will test when i reboot to Windows
Kaj 17-Jul-2007 [1055x5] | You should just be able to mount disks. We mount partitions and USB sticks to get at stuff. Syllable supports FAT and can read NTFS and Linux ext2 and ext3 |
Have you tried right-clicking in the background of the Disks folder?
Of course, VMWare is not the ideal environment for testing Syllable multimedia
The live CD is now available - that would also be a better environment for your testing:

Sunanda 17-Jul-2007 [1060] | Is there a reason for the syllable group not to be [web-public]? If it were [web-public], then non-Altme users could read it here: http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/aga-groups-index.r?world=r3wp And you (or anyone) could refer to a previous post via a persistent URL. |
Kaj 17-Jul-2007 [1061x3] | At the time when I made this group, I didn't want to impose too much on the REBOL community here. Do other people think it's a good idea? |
Hey, that's not Carl's script anymore. I didn't know the groups were fully archived now :-)
Is there a way to link to a group so that you always go to the latest post?
Sunanda 17-Jul-2007 [1064x2] | I don't think it's an imposition! It'd be a service. It's my script Latest post...... The format of the URL is: .....posts=worldnameNNNxMMM NNN=group-id, MMM=post-id. Use MMM=0 to mean latest *page* of posts for that group, eg: http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/aga-display-posts.r?post=r3wp152x0 |
Or, from the index page, click the date column [far right] for a group -- that takes you to the end too.
Kaj 17-Jul-2007 [1066x2] | That would be cool. Thanks! |
I added the web-public key. How long does it take to turn up on the site?
Sunanda 17-Jul-2007 [1068] | Thanks -- it'll be a couple of hours -- some automated jobs will spot the title change and schedule an upload. |
Kaj 17-Jul-2007 [1069] | Thanks! I'll propose a link from our own front page |
Sunanda 17-Jul-2007 [1070] | Some posts are there already! http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/aga-display-posts.r?post=r3wp225x1 |
Kaj 17-Jul-2007 [1071x2] | Great! |
I see it among the groups now :-)
Sunanda 17-Jul-2007 [1073] | Glad to hear it. Looks like the whole thing is there now. |
Kaj 17-Jul-2007 [1074x3] | The link is on our front page now: |
http://www.syllable.org
Might catch some traffic from our release announcement
Alan 17-Jul-2007 [1077] | yes and it's working Thanks ! |
Sunanda 18-Jul-2007 [1078] | Nice, Kaj! |
Kaj 23-Jul-2007 [1079x2] | The translated live CDs we have been working on are now available. We have another article on OSNews with this and some other goodies: |

Kaj 17-Aug-2007 [1081x2] | Videos of Syllable 0.6.4 and Syllable Server, for those who are interested: |

Robert 18-Aug-2007 [1083x2] | Kaj, I downloaded the latest version as VMWare and used it on the Mac. Very cool :-)) |
This thing must really be a time killer... a nice one of course.
Kaj 19-Aug-2007 [1085x2] | Thanks. It sure is. On the other hand, around the time we started, five years ago, I and others spent so much time fixing Linux that we independently sort of decided that it wouldn't really take more time to spend it on developing our own operating system. It certainly leaves us with a lot more to show for all that time |
Well, both Linux and Windows, really. The Windows situation is still roughly the same. Linux has improved a lot over that time, but only to reach about the same levels as Windows
Kaj 22-Aug-2007 [1087x2] | Amiga software runs on Syllable now :-) |
