I salute Altme for simplicity ;)
DideC 31-May-2007 [2460] | n°151 |
Sunanda 31-May-2007 [2461] | Thanks all, again. Simple has advantages.....And that is a big advantage for me right now. But, with my Security hat on: the gaps in the Group-id numbers I see in the users.set file enable me to infer the existence of ex- or private groups. If I'd copied users.set daily, the skips in numbers would leak some additional information. Maybe not enough to launch some sort of attack, but more info than need be leaked. |
[unknown: 9] 31-May-2007 [2462] | KISS |
Sunanda 1-Jun-2007 [2463] | Keep it simple, sure. Bur also keep it safe and secure. Leaking the total number of groups (ever) in a world would not be considered secure enough in some markets. It's the traditional design tradeoffs. |
Graham 1-Jun-2007 [2464] | I"m glad it wasn't me that Reichart was kissing! |
Sunanda 1-Jun-2007 [2465] | If you are kissed by a baron, could you turn into a frog? |
Gregg 1-Jun-2007 [2466] | Share the love man, just share the love. |
ICarii 4-Jun-2007 [2467] | is it possible to have an API for altme where we can do things such as online backgammon via altme? Its the perfect lobby setup :) |
Gabriele 4-Jun-2007 [2468] | AltME 3 |
ICarii 4-Jun-2007 [2469] | great - ill start on Backgammon next weekend :) |
Pekr 4-Jun-2007 [2470x2] | Icarii, but coding for AltME 3 will start in few months imo :-) |
-pekr- being a bad guy once again :-)
ICarii 4-Jun-2007 [2472] | ahh - but its better to be prepared no? ;) |
amacleod 12-Jun-2007 [2473x2] | How does Altme! keep track of a client's cach of messages? Does it update based on differences from the messages on hte client machine or from the server? What I want to know is: if I use altme from two differnet computers will I always get a full update when I log on or will I lose messages if I loged on a different computer before. I'm having trouble updating on a computer I recently installed Altme on. I am not able to get many of the groups to download the old messages. |
Is there a way to manualy download the messages for a perticular group?
Brock 12-Jun-2007 [2475x3] | It updates based on the list from the client. You can install on multiple computers using the same account and it will download all the messages to ensure your clients are up to date. |
Reichart can confirm if there is a way to get old messages. You might be able to either delete a group index file or something like that, but I don't know for sure as I haven't played with this at all. Others here may have experience.
I know if you right-click on a group name, you will get some details related to that group. I believe the number that appears in the upper right-hand corner may be of use to help idenfify the file that is used to store the contents of the group.
Brock 13-Jun-2007 [2478] | What you are describing may be the symptom that others have been talking about to describe the 'Dot' problem that happens on some clients. I can't help there as I have never experienced messages not appearing or groups being out of synch, to the best of my knowledge. |
[unknown: 9] 13-Jun-2007 [2479] | You have to reinstall to get a full fresh mix (simply put). |
Ingo 13-Jun-2007 [2480x4] | IIRC problems with altme fonts on linux have already been discussed, I just don't know where. |
For the time being I can switch the text fonts from "much too small" to "still too small", while the groups list stays on "barely readable".
Any ideas? (I'm using Ubuntu 7.04: X.org 7.2.0)
Anb by the way, though altme tells me, that I'd have to press ALT-S to send, it still sends on return
Gabriele 13-Jun-2007 [2484] | if you're using ubuntu 7.04, use altme under wine. it works much better :) |
Ingo 16-Jun-2007 [2485] | Well, that's an alternative I don't particularly like ... would it help to change so Debian? |
Gabriele 16-Jun-2007 [2486x2] | don't think so. |
but, you may try installing more fonts... i think altme linux is using helvetica, maybe you don't have a scalable version of helvetica.
Volker 16-Jun-2007 [2488] | for me it works. either i have better eyes (doubt that) or i installed something. could be http://www.getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Software_and_Tweaks#Miscellaneous # Extra Fonts (Additional fonts and msttcorefonts) |
[unknown: 9] 16-Jun-2007 [2489] | Please post a picture of AltME looking bad on your flavour of Linux. |
Geomol 17-Jun-2007 [2490] | I think, there are too many groups in this world, REBOL3. Am I alone with this point of view? |
Ashley 17-Jun-2007 [2491] | Let's start another group to discuss this issue. ;) But seriously, if there was an option to archive/delete "inactive" groups (say, after 6 months without a new post) then that might help. |
Henrik 17-Jun-2007 [2492] | I would also not mind if worlds could be split up, or if you could move groups between worlds. |
Chris 17-Jun-2007 [2493] | Is this not why they included dividers? |
Geomol 20-Jun-2007 [2494] | AltME is nice! :-) It's maybe not perfect, but it's one of the applications, I really use a lot. And that I enjoy using. Say thanks to the team, Reichart! If I could, I would take them out for a beer. |
[unknown: 9] 20-Jun-2007 [2495] | : ) |
Pekr 20-Jun-2007 [2496] | And I would take them out for beer even if they would not do AltME in particular :-) |
Sunanda 20-Jun-2007 [2497] | You may remember that, before the Crash of March '07, REBOL.net was hosting a small, web-accessible archive of this world.....It showed the last 300 posts in all [web-public] groups. Now, with Carl's permission, we're hosting it on REBOL.org. With some changes: -- *all* the posts, not just the last 300 -- permanent URLs, so you can refer to classic posts by a fixed address -- [one day soon: fully searchable] http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/aga-groups-index.r?world=r3wp *** Posts will lag a day or so behind for the first few weeks until we properly integrate it into REBOL.org. |
Ashley 20-Jun-2007 [2498] | Thankyou. |
Gregg 9-Jul-2007 [2499x3] | Re: Serving multiple worlds. If I have a shortcut to start a second world, e.g.: path/altme.exe -s "worldname" -p 5401 On the same machine where a world is running on port 5400, the second world starts fine, but the Check World tool reports that it's on Port 5400, and attempts to connect go to the other world (which *is* on port 5400). Has anyone else seen this? |
In a similar vein, does anyone else want the feature to be able to post via the command line or some nice API? e.g. path/altme.exe -w world -to group|user -m msg
One problem with the command line approach could be message length/formatting.
btiffin 9-Jul-2007 [2502] | Sending a quick note with the CLI would be nice and I'd use it. Maybe not everyday, but I can see the potential. (Now I'm kidding...) Unless I had to boot into Windows to send the quick note. |
