BrianW 4-Mar-2005 [161] | Agreed, I had a little chuckle too :-) |
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [162] | interesting thing I use a html/php interfaces netgear eth/wifi routeur but I think with rebol this kind of config interface could be very much interesting |
BrianW 4-Mar-2005 [163] | Wouldn't it be a much smaller load on the router as well? Seems that way to me, anyhow. |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [164] | RASTA was the only name I could find that any one could remember, it was easy to pronounce, and has some meaning related to networking. RASTA means the way in Hurdu. |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [165x2] | Who's the target market? |
these are not home use devices are they?
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [167x3] | I am glad you guys like it ;-) |
Not et all. These are use for WISP (Wireless ISP), or HotSpot providers.
They can be used on the battle field by the military too. But I am pacifist so I had not persued that road.
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [170x2] | I just joined up my office with a wireless provider |
we switched from DSL to wireless radio
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [172] | As far as I see on the site RASTA is dedicated to outdoor application like neighbour of houses |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [173] | the radio modem is tiny .. and battery backed up as well. |
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [174x2] | http://www.whywire.com/applications.html |
jaime that was not a bad remark not at all in fact I like the RASTA acronym it's pretty fun ;)
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [176] | Perhaps I could rebroadcast my cable signal using these devices to my neighbours ? :) |
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [177] | yes and to all your block ;) |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [178] | setup community LANs ... |
shadwolf 4-Mar-2005 [179] | it's a hight range difusion interface ;) |
Ammon 4-Mar-2005 [180] | Sounds perfect for where I'm at right now... Small community with several friends nearby. I'm always helping them with their computers anyhow. With a couple of these I could have us all connected. ;-) |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [181] | Graham: Yes, you could rebroadcast the signal to your neighbors |
BrianW 4-Mar-2005 [182x2] | That would be kind of cool. Pity I don't like many of my neighbors in my current neighborhood |
Well, my current building at least :-)
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [184x2] | As matter fact I had build a lot of those networks close to 100 sites. |
One of the networks is spread over 50 km radius connecting the stores of a retail chain in the city of bogota. This is going to be the next case study.
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [186] | what's the cost of a broadcast unit, and a receiver? |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [187x3] | Between 1300 and 1500 depending on the number of radios |
For single cpu client access we had the "Horizon" cards they are at $80
For Small Biz LAN we are coming out with a unit that will go around $400. I am trying to make it close to $200, but still struggling with some costs.
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [190x2] | what radio frequency is used? |
what's the broadcast range for the small biz lan unit
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [192x2] | 2.4 Ghz with 2400 series. We will have in about a two months the 5800 series which operates at 5.8Ghz, possibly at 4.9Ghz too. |
With a good antenna the small biz lan can do 30 km
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [194] | 2.4 is the same frequency as the 802.11 g isn't it? |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [195] | Yes, and a lot of other stuff, telephones, meters, etc. |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [196] | My father's house is about 50m down the road .. so if I were to get one of these small biz units, mount it outside on the roof, and he were to get a radio modem, I would be able to provide him with access to my cable internet? |
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [197] | Jaime - where is the rebol advantage? |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [198] | probably 100m and not 50 m |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [199x2] | We use the same code to configure the unit. To generate the admin tools. To design the networks. And all uses the same code base. Everything runs of different OS. |
Graham. 100% yes. | |
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [201] | I have friend here in CZ, who did very GOOD AP, where you can use card of any arbitrary chipset producer (Atheros, others). He uses IP2K CPU from Ubicom. The same one we use for our projects. But he has a bit difficulcy to sell here. It is much better but also more expensive than e.g. Ovislink. |
Graham 4-Mar-2005 [202] | ok, let me know when these units are available :) |
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [203] | btw - he has also traffic shaping ... |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [204] | Well I have issues with UBICOM. Our AP does a lot more that just route the pkts. We can provide a lot functionalty because we had a real processor. |
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [205] | what real processor? |
JaimeVargas 4-Mar-2005 [206x3] | 586 |
Or PPC | |
The ubicom is cool as it lets you create pci interfaces by flipping pins. But then you are restricted in the OS, and you need to use Ubicoms intellectual property and tools. I use openbsd.
Pekr 4-Mar-2005 [209x2] | Although it is in Czech, there are screenshots for you to see what can be configured - http://www.mikrovlny.cz/prilohy/GIOMEX.pdf |
What you call proprietary toos I call pretty advanced SDK you get with demoboard :-)
