For larger files I use S3copy ( http://download.cnet.com/S3copy-Amazon-S3-Command-Line-Copy/3000-2242_4-10915715.html
) as it does not block my application if I get something else to
do the uploads
Requires .Net though

If you port that to Syllable Desktop and downsize it one or two orders
of magnitudes, I'm willing to have a look :-)

After you port .net :)

I looked into that when it came out, but rejected the idea in later
years
I've even ported part of GNU Portable DotNet

Is Java on Syllable yet?
Is there a Syllable AMI ?

We used to have the Kaffe VM, but nobody did anything with it, so
beyond shouting that we must have it, there's no interest
As I said, I haven't started with EC2 yet. I'd have to port Syllable
Server to EC2. Syllable Desktop is impossible to run on EC2, unless
you'd run it in a full emulator

Are people running desktops on Ec2 ?
And I pre-paid for a 3 year Windows instance a month or so ago :(

You could run remote desktops on a server, so I guess some people
are also doing that on EC2
Admins like single points of failure ;-)

some guy was monitoring hundreds of ECGs on Ec2 :(
All this happening a few days after that Chinese hacker group boasting
that they could bring down any country's infrastructure :(
This fiasco has seriously dented the reputation of running cloud
based systems. If the largest provider can't get it right, who can?

Probably the smallest. They carry a way lighter load
The uptime of our attic cloud compares quite favourably with many
providers
Although now that I've said that, I'm sure the hot weather will soon
blow out a hard disk...

You run your server in the attic? the hotest part of the house??
Kaj

Some days of the year, yes
Then again, we don't have hundreds of heart patients hanging off
it

I think I should setup a secondary fall back server in the Singapore
availability zone. Hopefully what happens in the USA does not impact
other regions.
Amazon's talk of region isolation was clearly not true.

Houses here don't have cellars anymore, because, as anyone knows,
electricity is always there...

Don't most Dutch houses have wind mills on them for power?
Kaj

Just a few farms
And besides, they run the machines that cut out the wooden shoes
GrahamC

and the wooden shoes are burnt to make steam?

That's when we eat the tulips

search for Chiu to find out about the wind turbine I had on my house
:)
And here's a picture of my turbine http://www.compkarori.com/images/air403.gif
I have an inverter so that I could use the power from the 12V batteries
to power my server

It says you still have it but it will cost you tonnes to turn it
on...
GrahamC

I don't have it anymore .. the company took it away :(
The threat of a $200,000 fine was a little too oppressive for me
Kaj

[5997]
How big was it?
GrahamC
23-Apr-2011
[5998x2]
not very big .. just over 1m span I think. Made lots of noise energy
only!
I think they use these on small boats where if the neighbours complain,
you just sail somewhere else!
Kaj

[6000x2]
:-) Yeah, I've seen those in recent years
So they make too much noise because they're too small?
GrahamC
23-Apr-2011
[6002x2]
yes
well, because they spin so fast
Kaj

[6004x2]
That's the case with CPU fans, as well
Size matters. The bigger the better
GrahamC

to shed energy ( so that they blades don't fall apart ), they undergo
fibroelastic shudder
which creates vortices and lots of noise
flutter
