OnLive seems to be available now in the app store. Seems to work 
quite well if you can believe this video. I had forgotten about this 
tech - it's got significant implications to the platform fragmentation 
issue. See around the 8 min mark where they're running Maya on an 
iPad.

I only have barely enough bandwidth to run Onlive on my macbook, 
but for some of my friends, it seems to work well.

I find it hard to believe that the lag can be acceptable for gaming. 
You can't avoid the network delays.

I'm not sure how much lag there is.

When I used citrix, which is basicaly the same, it was very painfull.

onlive does look much better implemented though.

wrt the maya trick... its obviously a bit misleading since its  noted 
that they are using networked processing within autodesk which actually 
has nothing to do with onlive  :-)

I just played a bunch of trial games. Not bad at all.

FPS, racing - totally playable

this was using the Windows client

it's amazing that the graphics quality is determined by the hardware 
on the remote end - and it seems to be top notch

You'd get a similar effect if you were to pipe R3 Draw definitions 
over the network

LOL I thought they made it 'cloud powered' so it can run on low-end 
HW. So it's just kind of marketing trick.

really? A friend of mine ran it on a low-end notebook.

notebook = netbook.

Pixel Shaders 2.0 doesn't  sound to me as low-end feature. IIRC it 
was introduced roughly when netbooks came on market  which is not 
too long. So maybe they took it as 'low end' to show that if it runs 
on visually 'small PC' it uses low-end HW. I have different meaning 
of 'low end' though.

Sigh, netbooks are like supercomputers when running Syllable on them

Cyphre, I asked my friend and he ran it on an intel GMA950 netbook. 
AFAIK, all it does is stream video.

AFAIK OnLive just streams video. However, it refused to work here 
when I tried it (it claimed my network latency was too high and did 
not even let me try it).

There was an update a few days ago that would let me see the main 
menu, before it halted due to "Network quality" errors. Before that, 
there was just latency errors.

I think that right now, you'd have the most luck with OnLive if you're 
in North America. According to their blog, they're spreading out 
all over the world, but there are no guarantees.

They can probably make it legal.

btw.. what does it meams "French politicians"? I don't believe that 
all of them.

I think it is against the competition law.

It takes 1-2 uninformed politicians to make headlines, so it may 
not be as bad as it seems, but it's seems the desire for categorizing 
and quantifying software through law making won't end any time soon.

I don't get why they exclude "computers" from the piracy tax. Most 
pirates use computers running Windows, same as most computer users.

Do not look for logical reason, they simply are politicians, who 
search for any pretext to increase taxes

It is

On the surface, yes. Deeper down, most are not compensated.

But the stupidity lies in  what they think is a computer is. 
- An engine which runs windows

When it comes at stupidity, our politicians are not half way.

I really don't mind that tax in principle, but only if it works to 
compensate musicians, not beaurocrats. And includes the computers 
as well, or at least any device for which the MP3 patents have been 
paid.

why don't they just tax everyone and you can get a tax rebate if 
you can prove you're deaf and blind ?

face it, you're only got one pair of those sense organs, and it doesn't 
seem to be fair to be taxed twice if you own two mp3 players

Or, the french govt could use profiling ... and tax those who fit 
the profile
