Sunanda 15-Aug-2007 [2540] | Terry, builtwith is not very accurate -- perhaps because it has no way on ascertaining the serverside environment. For example, it assesses REBOL.org as using PHP and javascript. REBOL.org uses no PHP at all -- I suspect builtwith is simply reporting one of the server into headers which names the version of PHP that the ISP provides. Similarly, REBOL.org has no javascript -- just an empty <script>...</script> tag to prevent FOUC in older browsers. |
Pekr 17-Aug-2007 [2541x5] | Adobe Air (formerly Apollo) - nice initial page video - http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/air/ |
has anyone tried it? Pity R3 was not here 5 years ago ....
http://labs.adobe.com/showcase/air/
Downloaded AIR package, some 9MB .exe. They seem to have their own UI, which is kinda nice - kind of Confabulator type of apps, but proportional sizes of UI elements are terrible - big buttons, small letters, etc.
and I don't understand it - they went one step back - they call it a "desktop integration" - basically they let their plug-in to run outside the browser, like we have with View installed for ages. They ask you, if you want to place "airlet" app icon on the desktop :-) I hope we beat them :-)
Terry 17-Aug-2007 [2546] | Check out Google Gears while you're at it. |
Pekr 20-Aug-2007 [2547x3] | It seems that Maxim Shemanarev (Author of AGG) now works for ScaleForm - http://www.scaleform.com.... |
But they seem to support OpenVG - http://www.khronos.org/openvg/ - so maybe they acquired Maxim, but not using AGG?
btw - openVG seems being HW accelerated, AGG is not (yet)

Rebolek 22-Aug-2007 [2551] | content aware image resizing - http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/66481/detail/ |
PatrickP61 22-Aug-2007 [2552] | That is so cool another link: http://www.merl.com/projects/mediaretargeting/ |
Geomol 23-Aug-2007 [2553] | Google do it again: http://earth.google.com/ Google Earth with Sky view. Very cool, I think! |
Tomc 23-Aug-2007 [2554] | alas it is earth or sky but not both |
Graham 23-Aug-2007 [2555] | Where's google Mars? |
Tomc 23-Aug-2007 [2556] | http://www.google.com/mars |
Graham 23-Aug-2007 [2557] | :) |
Pekr 24-Aug-2007 [2558] | Tafiti - showcase of MS Silverlight in action ... worth installing - very nice - that is the exact area I thought REBOL will excel at. Well, we come late .... http://www.tafiti.com |
btiffin 24-Aug-2007 [2559] | Petr; We really have to get you running GNU/Linux. :) This isn't really worthy of posting in Tech News, but I get a sneaky suspicion that with the lack luster Vista release, MS is going to get angry and start bullying a lot more than before. We of the alternative universe will need to fortify the battlements or prepare to be assimilated. 2007/2008 could see the biggest FUD fight yet. Or maybe not. I do have a skewed view of the situation now-a-days, very one-sided. My side...the right side...the light side. :) |
Pekr 25-Aug-2007 [2560] | Brian - but Silverligth will be ported to Linux IIRC ... |
PeterWood 25-Aug-2007 [2561] | I'm not sure that ported is the correct word but Silverlight has been cloned as Moonlight for Mono: http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlight |
Terry 25-Aug-2007 [2562x4] | You guys really need to take a closer look at Kommonwealth. |
Silverlight's showcase doesn't work with Firefox http://silverlight.net/Showcase/
hrmm.. was the pop-up blocker.
Well, they don't work, even after the pop-ups are fixed.
PeterWood 25-Aug-2007 [2566] | They work for me in Firefox |
Pekr 25-Aug-2007 [2567] | Terry - after allowing pup-up in FF, you have to reload certain page. IMO Mozilla should fix that and load page automatically ... |
Henrik 25-Aug-2007 [2568] | http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2053834&SiteID=25 <--- I guess, what shouldn't happen, happened. :-) |
Terry 25-Aug-2007 [2569] | Worked after a FF restart. |
Robert 27-Aug-2007 [2570x2] | http://www.q4rt.de/ That's the benchmark for R3 :-) |
http://www.abrahamjoffe.com.au/ben/canvascape/ The javascript version ;)
Pekr 27-Aug-2007 [2572] | heh, fast, even if it is JS only :-) |
Jerry 1-Sep-2007 [2573] | Python 3.0a1 Release: August 31st, 2007 http://www.python.org/download/releases/3.0/ Online Documentation is updated twice a day http://docs.python.org/dev/3.0/ |
DanielSz 1-Sep-2007 [2574] | That's very interesting, all the language designers working on the next version : Python 3, Perl 6, and of course Rebol 3, hoping to eliminate the mistakes of early design, and ready to break compatibility with the previous version for the sake of a brighter future. |
BrianW 4-Sep-2007 [2575] | I found the Python news interesting because Guido plans on maintaining the 2.x line for a while even after 3.0 has been released. Doing more than just bug fixes, I mean. It will be interesting to see how that works out. |
Geomol 4-Sep-2007 [2576] | http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/31/researchers-develop-a-360-degree-holographic-display/ |
btiffin 4-Sep-2007 [2577] | ISO votes no for first round of Microsoft's Open Office XML bid http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136711-c,techindustrytrends/article.html |
Tomc 4-Sep-2007 [2578] | well hurrmph ... they will just have to go out and buy some more. |
btiffin 4-Sep-2007 [2579x2] | I'm pretty sure this was the fast-track vote. There is another round coming in 2008. |
And Open Office is supposed to read Office Open, I doubt I'll ever get used to Office Open seeing as I use Open Office.
Terry 6-Sep-2007 [2581] | http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/10_future_web_trends.php |
Jerry 6-Sep-2007 [2582] | http://www.bbcbasic.co.uk/bbcwin/bbcwin.html BBC Basic for Windows is tiny and powerful. |
btiffin 7-Sep-2007 [2583] | Jerry; Check out the Dialects forum. Geomol has written a starter bbcbasic interpretter in REBOL. |
Terry 7-Sep-2007 [2584] | And while you're at it, check out the 1937 Fords.. I hear they're the 'bees knees'. |
Jerry 7-Sep-2007 [2585] | btiffin, the point is not the BASIC language. it's the compiler. Most of the applications developed in BBC Basic for Windows is under 100 KB. Only one EXE, no DLLs needed. |
Henrik 11-Sep-2007 [2586] | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6vSxR6UKFM&mode=related&search=<-- someone made saltwater burn |
Gabriele 11-Sep-2007 [2587] | i don't understand - if he's just using radio waves to break the bonds between H and O in the water, then the energy he gets is exactly the same he puts in. it's not an energy source - he's just converting electricity into radio waves then into fire. |
Henrik 11-Sep-2007 [2588] | a clean way to make heat |
Gabriele 11-Sep-2007 [2589] | just use a resistor if you want heat from electricity ;) |
