[!AltME] Discussion about AltME

Maybe we can shift to using Amazon's SDB .. they allow you to store
millions of records for no charge
Messages can be sent using the SQS once someone has committed a new
message to the store.
This gives us a backend, search, threading, no centralised server
requirements, no particular person needing to host a server.
You can build a front end using a browser client or a View client.
And you can use https if you wish too.
I thought about using an IRC server but again this is a single point
of failure.
Too ambitious??

I haven't been on consistently for a while, so I haven't noticed
outages, but nothing is too ambitious for you Graham. :-)

ambition, and the ability to fufill are two different matters :(
The only issue that I can see is that there is apparently no anonymous
access to SDB.
which means that again I will need another daemon to act as the proxy
to the SDB.
Still losing messages :(
disconnected this time ... here and R3beta
Looks like Altme is not usable today ...

Do you think it would make sense to implement few AltME enhancements,
which would not alter its messaging layer, but could help to make
our lifes easier? Some few months ago I contacted Carl, and he was
willing to post particular code sections for related areas. I read
also some 2005 list, and picking from (apparently easy to fix) bugs/enhancements:

- DeRED - mark everything read
- fix URL display bug
- fix proxy
- fix msg loss during reconnect .... (might be more complex)

I just don't know, if it is good to bother Carl with those issues
right now, when R3 is heading towards beta and we need to concentrate
on it ...
But - at least above 3 suggestions, might make better usability impression
for many ...

it would be a good idea if he gets time to publish that part of the
code.

For moderartion purposes is it possible/safe to delete messages from
a group in an Altme World?

Moderators currently have no ability to do that.

REBOL.org can blank posts on its archive, if requested with a good
reason:

These guys have been working on this for two years! WIth google resources?
I guess ity takes a long time to make these thypes of apps when you
are wedging technology not really ment to do it.

I'm not that impressed...(18 min. in to preseentation anyway...
lots of bugs...makes me feel better about the bugs I find in my app

Altissimo is Altme2. G Wave is just vapor as anything else, unless
released. Google just knows, how to hype the stuff ...

So - another hype from overhyped company happens :-)
= if you don't use iPone and Chrome as your browser, you are not
modern and trendy :-)
We need to create VID3 equivalent, call it SideWave, and we have
killer app for REBOL :-)
by equivalent I mean - wrap Google Wave, not to create competing
system ...

I'm using Google Wave at the moment (in Safari not Chrome) and it
offers a *bit* more than AltME in a browser.

It should offer much more ....
At least according to 1h+ video I saw :-)

The interesting thing is, that it has to come from overhyped Google.
Their marketing is done by their name, not by how good their ideas
are :-)
So - do we move to Wave now, as apparently the rest of the world
sucks? :-)

I just tried security essentials on one pc and it claimed to find
a Trojan in one of the AltMe chats.
Anyone with the same experience?

Altme.com once again lost my world registrations :-( Our worlds are
running locally without outage, and also our router has 234d uptime.
I really wonder, when/how it can happen, but as it already happened
in the past, this really start to be depressing ...

Pekr, welcome to my world. I eventually gave up complaing about
it and found the occurences to be far less frequent when I went down
to a single world being hosted on my home PC.

Me too...How do I get it back up?
This is the first time I lost my world and one has been running no
problem for over a year...
I re-started/registered and its back up again...I was afraid the
old files might get overwritten or some other screw-up but no probs
It seems even the port used has remained the same...
