[!AltME] Discussion about AltME

[unknown: 9]

Yeah, this happens to me too sometimes. Although I use Word a clipboard
(spell checking). Sometimes I grab EVERYTHING and just paste somehere.
I have had to get in the habit of NOT hitting send anywhere (not
just here, but o the web as a whole).

*pfft* ... that would require me *thinking* ;-)

Yeah..........me too!
Pretty much nothing pisses me off mor than having to think.
open your prefs.txt file and set:
sound-new-message: %wavefile.wav
It must be a simple wav format, not a compressed format.
for that want, this is how to change the sound in AltME.

There is a great webUI book called "Don't Make Me Think!" ... actually
the title is probably better than the book, the contents are getting
a little dated

Hey, this may be something for you clipboarders ...

autocutsel

Synchronise the two copy/paste buffers mainly used by X applications

Any easy way of limiting "Guest" posts to the Accounts group [only]?

Yeah, it is on the list, I call it the Knock Knock feature. The
way it works is people can actually sign up before even getting into
AltME from a website if they want.

Reichart, this list you speak of must be huge by now?

I believe Altme is being rewritten ground up...
so, it might be a couple of years before the next release
[unknown: 9]

[274]
Not years. Yes, List is big, but at least it is getting attacked
every day.

possibly also some kind of barrier to avoid replying to announcements
in the announce group

Reichart -- glad to hear Altme is being actively worked on. I'd
got the impression from an earlier message of yours (on REBOL2, maybe)
that Altme was what we used to call "functionally stabilised" (ie
dead as a development)

Now about some interim releases? Create a sense of progress and momentum.

Actually quite the opposite.

AltME is being rebuilt form the ground up (which is why we don't
try to fix every little thing on the current version).

We are building it to allow for the integration of applets, and a
core messaging system to make it more compatible with external applications
(for example).

Glad to hear that too!

I can state that the the team is in fact working day and night on
this. We just don't make a lot of noise when we are working.

Is there a way for me to make the user column wider by one letter
...so that the "s" at the end of my name is not orphaned to the next
line?
[unknown: 9]
19-Feb-2005
[283]
not yet, but it will be in the near future.
Graham

[284]
in the meantime, you could shorten your name :)

Yeah.

Change now or for ever be "grumpy"
Graham

[288]
You could reduce the name column size and give more space for chatting
Jean-François
19-Feb-2005
[289]
Can I do that change myself?
Graham
19-Feb-2005
[290]
No, I think only R can do that ..

THen, Reichart, would you please change my username to J-F
for the time being. thanks J-F
How come when Reichart changed hs name to "R", it was updated everywhere
and not "Jean-Françoi" ?

I am using large font, so I see you as:

Of the 5 messages I see of yours right now, the first an fifth have
the 's' on a newline - the other three have it chopped off...

JF, you need backup persona's in case of partial identity theft.
 That's what I do.

FYI - My server crashed (win2k) just as I was starting Altme, somehow
all world data was destroyed, and Altme refused to run. Required
a re-install.
Graham

[300]
you lost all your world data? do you mean your data is all blank?
 Or was it corrupted?
Terry
19-Feb-2005
[301]
It was gone completely.
Graham
19-Feb-2005
[302]
perhaps you're looking in the wrong directory?
[unknown: 9]
20-Feb-2005
[303]
It was gone completely.

What method did you use to search for it?
Terry
20-Feb-2005
[304]
File exploder..didn't spend too much time diagnosing.. perhaps it
was there somewhere.. but it sure wasn't working.. I recommend that
you don't use Altme to control any nuclear reactors without some
extensive testing.
Allen

Current Altme uses a different directory to the early betas. Likely
the worlds are still there, just in the old location

If files are "gone", they should be found by chkdsk and be in the
FOUND.XXX directory. But names are lost :-(
Graham
20-Feb-2005
[307]
chkdsk?? wow, what version of dos are u using?
Vincent
20-Feb-2005
[308]
Terry: I hope nobody uses Win2k to control any nuclear reactor. Win2k
does crash and removes files being modified. chkdsk works well, but
you have to analyse all restored files to figure filenames, and files
are extended to block boundaries. (had to recover an usb zip disk,
a nightmare) I don't think AltME is fautly here - I never saw any
Rebol apps trashing filesystem.
Terry

Should probably use RTOS for reactor.

not DOS, win2k or XP (ex: scandisk under 9x)
