[!AltME] Discussion about AltME

[unknown: 9] 21-Apr-2007 [2384] | And we, have for the most part completely stopped using Exchange server. It only stays running so we can confirm we are compatible with it from Qtask. |
Graham 21-Apr-2007 [2385x3] | it keeps everyone employed |
How can IT justify their existence if anyone can set it up??
ie. it is in the interests of the IT department to make sure only they can understand and run things
james_nak 21-Apr-2007 [2388] | And the IT refused to load Altme on his PC. He said he didn't want to slow down his computer. Hey, it's hard to win against that kind of mindset. Not even the truth sways that. |
Graham 21-Apr-2007 [2389x2] | IT departments are not interested in truths .. just their jobs |
50% of IT guys are disillusioned with their lives and jobs
james_nak 21-Apr-2007 [2391] | Isn't that so. |
Henrik 22-Apr-2007 [2392x3] | one may laugh at Dilbert, but one might begin to cry, when one experiences the same things in real life corporations. |
Yes, I know a few disillusioned IT guys, who are in it for the money, but still curse the systems they have to manage. They must've lost the intererst a long time ago. They have not had experiences with anything that is truly great, revolutionary or in other ways very different from what they are currently working with.
James, I had the opportunity recently, while I was in a busy period (before this one) to make money on a job setting up an AltME-like website and was given about a week to do it. I decided to hand them AltME instead. I never got any money for solving the problem in 5 minutes rather than a week and I never heard back from them, so I don't know how it went. I suspect people are not interested in something that is not already in use by millions of people. One can ponder whether that was a stupid move or not. :-)
Graham 22-Apr-2007 [2395] | should have sub-contracted the job out here :) |
Terry 23-Apr-2007 [2396x2] | 90%+ of people are disillusioned with their lives and their jobs. |
I even know of doctors that would rather be IT professionals.
Pekr 23-Apr-2007 [2398] | and I know IT professional, who wanted to be a doctor. Took 3 years of medicine college study, but did not make it ... |
Graham 23-Apr-2007 [2399] | And I know of some doctors who can't decide what they want to be .. so they do both! |
Pekr 23-Apr-2007 [2400] | :-) |
Henrik 23-Apr-2007 [2401] | and I know of doctors who really shouldn't be doctors, but that's another story. |
Gregg 25-Apr-2007 [2402x2] | I've seen this error twice now, on machines where AltMe is connecting to this world. Once on a machine where the world has been for a long time, and it caused it to resync everything; the second time, just now, on a virgin machine: |
AltME Error: Cannot write to file: track/track.set Is the file write protected? Does the directory exist?
Sunanda 28-Apr-2007 [2404] | Is it just me? For the past week or so I've been all but locked out of Altme between (it varies) 18:00 and 21:00 UT. Messages sent may get lost with the status message hanging on "Internet busy" If I close and reconnect, I may stay at status "logon" for an hour or more with the resync percentage stuck at some random value. No other connections are affected; and rebooting doesn't help. Maybe it's Altme's way of telling me to get an early night :-) |
Gregg 28-Apr-2007 [2405] | I've noticed worlds disconnecting momentarily more lately it seems, but I don't know what would cause that. I haven't seen the same problem you have though, and I haven't tracked it carefully enough to know if I'm just imagining things. |
Anton 28-Apr-2007 [2406] | Yep, more "internet busy" messages for me too. |
Sunanda 1-May-2007 [2407] | Search utility for Altme: works across worlds and even if you are offline: http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/documentation.r?script=skimp-my-altme.r *** Use the package downloader to install: do http://www.rebol.org/library/public/repack.r |
Anton 1-May-2007 [2408x2] | That's a good thing to have. |
question: why not "search-my-altme.r" as a filename ? (or another way: what does "skimp" mean ?)
Sunanda 1-May-2007 [2410] | It's a pun on the phrase "pimp my altme" skimp is the indexing engine....the project is really a demonstrator for what skimp can do: http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/view-script.r?script=skimp.r |
Anton 1-May-2007 [2411] | Ok, a reference back to your core indexing functions ? |
Sunanda 1-May-2007 [2412] | Got it! |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2413] | I'm sure someone has mentioned this but can you autostart a world after a reboot? I don't mean autoreturning to a world via the -w arg. |
Maxim 2-May-2007 [2414] | do a search in this world... its been covered before... or just browse up a bit... you're bound to find it. |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2415] | Thanks. |
Brock 2-May-2007 [2416] | James, I use windows so I would put the shortcut in my startup folder, with the appropriate parameters to auto-start. I know I put my solution in earlier, I'll try and find the date for you to save you from looking. |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2417] | Thanks. Brock. I did look but couldn't find it. |
Brock 2-May-2007 [2418] | May 11, 2006 |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2419] | thx |
Brock 2-May-2007 [2420] | search words: world shortcut user: brock |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2421] | Brock, how does it handle the password portion? |
Brock 2-May-2007 [2422] | I believe it's assumed since it's running on the 'server' and being accessed by the script, that the password is not required. I think it's only when starting a world from the client that you are asked for the password. |
james_nak 2-May-2007 [2423] | Ah, well if it works. Thanks so much. |
james_nak 8-May-2007 [2424x3] | Listen, I have a question. How do I know which port it is using? C:\Program Files\AltMe\altme.exe" -s "<Worldname>" -p <portnumber> |
Maybe just use one of the open ones? 5400-5409
Hey, it works! Thanks. I got to thinking that maybe I should try to just try to start it from the CMD and presto! Thanks!
Brock 8-May-2007 [2427x2] | from the Safeworlds site there is a way to identify what port the world connected to... AltME Tools > Check Your World... then type your world name ie, Rebol3, and it will tell you what port you connected through. Typically the first world connected will get 5400 and then each one after will increment the port number. |
Glad you found a way to get it to work.
TimW 20-May-2007 [2429] | Is there a way to sync the groups? Several of the groups here show up as having no messages. I thought they were empty until I added a message to one and then it downloaded the past messages. Is there a way to force it to grab the messages for the other groups? |
Anton 20-May-2007 [2430x2] | There is a "dot" group. What you do is go there and type something, traditionally a ".", and that works for some people. |
I noticed this effect sometimes. Sending a message seems to "unblock the pipe".
Sunanda 20-May-2007 [2432] | Also worth trying: type a message to yourself. What used to work is logging on as guest and then relogging on as yourself. This world has no guest account so that won't work here; but it may work in other worlds. |
TimW 20-May-2007 [2433] | are the conversations cached anywhere online like the mailing list? |
