denismx: the password is saved when it is asked via the gui. so it's
not asking you because you have set it already :)

Gabriele: is it because the password has been saved and is reused,
or maybe that password asked when creating a world is jus the password
for the "master" account?
In my mind, that would explain why it is asked and never used afterwards.
I remember vaguely that when I had tried starting a world with the
-s paramater, Alteme was not picking up the worlds user list, like
it was not started in the correct directory. Anyway. I'm glad to
have this solution now. So I'm preparing to setup my linux server
to come up with X and altme running on my world after a boot up.

Graham -- I've not seen such a problem today.

denis: the password is needed to be able to start a word with a given
name. this is so someone else does not take up your name.
however, unless you "buy" the name, it is kept only for a few days
or weeks (i don't remember how much time), so if that expires, the
password is not needed/valid anymore, and the name is free.

My understanding is a world name is kept as long as you use it within
ten days of your last connection. However, I have had world names
that I didn't pay for drop on the same day a world was used. For
example, I change between three world names when I loose the one
I am currently using. A pain for the users of course, which I assume
would not happen if I would just spend the small amount to reserve
the world name. Otherwise, I'm sure this would be a pretty big topic
for SafeWorlds.

Wooo hooo, back on altme :-) Was anyone else experiencing difficulties
connecting? Even rebol.net was down for me. Well, maybe so, as I
am alone here :-)

Well, I naively thought, that maybe RT is preparing servers for unexpected
R3 release, all new website, etc. Silly me :-)

the server just crashed (probably same problem as mail.rebol.net,
but we don't know for sure yet)
Carl said it could have been some Fedora update that happened automatically

how does altME install an update over itself?
and how does it restart itself?
Graham

[2322]
Why not just turn off automatic updates?
Henrik

[2323]
that's not the point. I'm making the same mechanism myself and was
wondering how a running program can delete itself.

Huh?
It's a linux update ..not altme
Henrik

uhm... I don't think we are talking about the same thing.
I'm talking about the Windows version of AltME. Whenever there is
an update, it's capable of updating itself and restarting. I simply
want to know how it does that, because I need that functionality
in my own programs.

its possible, the bulk of the code is not within the altme.exe file
itself.
but only Reichart can really tell you how he implemented it.

Maarten's program does that too .. uses Gab's library.
I think there is just a shell running that runs the encrypted source.
when new source is detected, it just downloads it, and restarts by
loading the new source and running it.
which is why it only updates when the program starts ...

I run a Windows 2003 server on another box .. since there is no communcation
to outside .. I decided never to update it.
That was after a particular bad instance when this box updated, and
blue screened after that. I had to completely reinstall the OS about
3 times, each time blue screening after an update. Never again!

That is really strange ... and tells something about Microsoft.

It is probably okay if you have 100%standard configuration.
I just installed suse10 on another box ( old dell poweredge server
).
Did all the updates and then tried to install vmware server .. no
go. complained of kernel mismatches when trying to do stuff.
So, wiped the install, installed fresh from cd, and then installed
vmware server. Not a single glitch now.
Should I therefore not install anymore patches?
Can not safeworlds host R3 ?

and now we have new "patches" like WGA, which may stop your computer
from working also
