I noticed recently that this hosting site... http://www.nebularis.com/ is offering REBOL support, so it's another one to add to the list of hosts that do so. (I signed up with Nebularis and am happy with them so far, though I've not done much with my site yet.) -- Carl Read

Just wanted everyone to know we got a new hosting provider for REBOL cgi scripts. I must say I have been very pleased since I got with these guys. I didn't know these guys at all until I started with them and they have been great since. I really hope we show them our gratitude for their efforts. Here is an affiliate link I got for their services if your interested: http://www.aitsafe.com/go.htm?go=www.lowesthosting.com&afid=33977&tm=30&im=1 I do get paid for that link for a "finders fee" so if you don't wish for me to get that then I still ask of you to check them out at www.lowesthosting.com. Paul Tretter ----------------------------------------------- Hello Paul, We have forwarded your request to our sys admin , and he was convinced that the REBOL would not cause any problem for the server. We went ahead and installed it for your domain ( FOR FREE :-) ) at /home/httpd/vhosts/tretsoft.com/cgi-bin/rebol/rebol and also installed a test script to check the working of REBOL . http://tretsoft.com/cgi-bin/rebol/now.cgi Check it .. and confirm the working . Go ahead and break the good news to your friends . :-) . Thank you. However, I only know REBOL and not those others which really reduces my capability to really enjoy the site. Here is a link to info on REBOL CGI: http://www.rebol.com/docs/cgi1.html Here is just an expert of that article. a.. REBOL is the same on all systems. That means that you can write and debug your script on your local Windows or Mac system where it is much easier. Then, when you are ready, you can upload the script to a Linux, BSD, or some other server, and the script will work fine. This features also lets you use scripts written by other developers without caring about what operating system they run on. a.. REBOL is very small and requires no installation. REBOL/Core is less than 300 KB on most platforms. That means you can download REBOL in a few seconds. And, because it does not need to be installed, you're all ready to go. It's that easy! a.. REBOL does not require administrative (root) permission. That makes your IT or computer admin folks happy because it means they don't have to worry about it "taking down" the server. And, it makes you happy too, because you can get REBOL CGI working without waiting for the IT folks to install or upgrade the program. If its security reason why its not allowed then you might look at the third bullet. I just really want to enjoy my experience at lowesthosting.com and do some creative work. From my domain name you can probably tell - I want to sell software. In fact - software made with REBOL. Its the only language I know and makes good sense for me to sell it and script it with REBOL. I know that I can eventually setup a pretty good ecommerce package if I make it myself down the road. Additionally, I can help your programmers in support issues as I am a long time REBOL programmer. Even further I will walk right into the REBOL List and post your url and copy you on it if you support REBOL for hosting and you will most likely get more customers as a result. Let me know if I should talk to some managers or others at Lowesthosting.com if the decision lies in their hands. Also, everyone has been wonderful in getting my process rolling. Looks like everything is going good. I had a slight problem where I couldn't connect to my control panel but seems to be something with my Internet Explorer configuration on both of my computers. I used my Netscape browser and it worked fine. Thanks again, Paul Tretter

Good news, but... I already have such a deal ($5/month) at Gabriele's company: www.hostingvirtuale.com Needless to say their support is rebol-minded ;-) --Maarten

Hi Paul I'm glad you've find an ISP you like. But I was not aware of any host problems installing REBOL and running cgi with it. No special permissions required nor builds to do. The only tricky stuff is if you need some fancy Apache httpd.config tweaking. Anyone else care to confirm or correct this point..? thanks - Jason ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Tretter" <[ptretter--charter--net]> To: <[rebol-list--rebol--com]> Sent: Friday, November 07, 2003 1:14 AM Subject: [REBOL] REBOL hosting

That's good service. Maybe you could now get them to add REBOL to this list... http://www.lowesthosting.com/glossary/ssi.html -- Carl Read

I'd say there's four types of hosting services with regards to REBOL... 1) Those that openly support REBOL. 2) Those that'll help you to get REBOL running, even though they don't really know it. 3) Those that'll let you run it - if you can work out how. 4) And those that'll say no if you ask them if you can install it. Then again, a host that offers Command would beat one that offers just Core. -- Carl Read

Unless the server is braindead (i.e. Windows ;-), you just put the REBOL binary somewhere in your space (possibly out of the web accessible area) and use the CGI extension for your scripts. However, having support from the techs is usually a good thing; so, a hosting company that treats REBOL nicely is good news anyway. Hi, Gabriele, That doesn't always work... Gabriele Santilli wrote:

The .cgi extension doesn't work unless the server is configured for it. Non-braindead web servers (e.g. Apache, Netscape, etc.) don't serve cgi scripts from user space unless specifically configured to do so. Some (many?) ISPs choose not to turn these options on, out of concern for one or more of the following: - security, - wanting to prevent unskilled programmers from writing code that consumes too much resource (e.g. cpu, ram, disk, etc.), - preventing their users from generating spam, - etc. For many of the same reasons, ISPs often do not allow (or charge more, or require special arramgment for) shell access. Assuming that the server is running A Real Operating System (e.g. Linux, Unix, et familia) one may need shell access to make a file executable, even if one can upload it to one's filespace. -jn-

This is perceived as a different issue in the hosting business, even if it's actually almost the same as CGI security-wise. (Well, actually most users would probably do much more damage with the shell than they do with CGI, with some server configurations.) My experience has been different. In the instances of Apache I've worked with, the cgi-bin directory is generally writable only by the admins, not by users in general, and .cgi service from user directories has to be enabled (is not enabled by default).

Only if you're coming from another Linux/Unix/etc box. If you FTP from a 'doze box, the bits aren't set IME. -jn- -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Joel Neely joelDOTneelyATfedexDOTcom 901-263-4446 Enron Accountingg in a Nutshell: 1c=$0.01=($0.10)**2=(10c)**2=100c=$1

Well, if you do hosting for business, you don't use that kind of setup. We (HostingVirtuale) use Ensim Webbpliance, that creates a chroot jail for each virtual site. Each user has its own cgi-bin and html directories, plus its own users and even subdomains. There's a lot of software out there for doing hosting; and you can do things manually too. Anyway, I didn't want to contradict you; what I'm just saying is that if you pay for CGI and you don't get CGI... then there's something wrong. :-) JN> Only if you're coming from another Linux/Unix/etc box. Our customers just have FTP access and they manage to set the x bit (well, most of them :). remember that I found a way to do it even in rebol... I had sent a ftp protocol patch which allowed files to be set as executable... once transfered... its quite easy.. my patch does crash rebol's ftp access at some point, as I did not put enough time into properly identifying tcp handshaking, but for any one who is just transfering a few files and has a decent connection to his server, it works. if the connection fails, just restart rebol and continue... ftp itself supports the chmod command, its just a question of sending it. -MAx
