Hm, our Syllable convention was reported on a Danish site, and it
immediately spawned what I called an ABS movement (Anything But Syllable)
in which every imaginable operating system was mentioned as an alternative,
instead of responding to the subject. There could easily be an Anything
But REBOL movement, as well...
Pekr:

guys, that is completly unrealistic as 1) RT's site simply sucks
2) Announcement page contains broken links 3) It is still kind of
vaporware announcement like Amiga Inc. did and bad habit of RT -
announcing things BEFORE they are ready 4) if it would be ready,
there should be some thought out code/service examples on-line, with
real-life functionality exposed, so actually ppl could try something
usefull 5) What is Scot doing as marketing manager if the position
still exists? RT just can't mean it that way, right? Producing ultra
cool sw will not help you, if not marketed properly, at least here
in Europe

OK, so 1) Is there a web site set up for the RDC yet? 2) The deadline
is 31-12/11:59:59. Is it GMT? 3) I hope that 32kB limitaion is final.
Is that true? 3) Will the submited demos be available publicly before
deadline? (I vote no). Hm, I've got only 14 days left. I should better
hurry up ;)

For things that do exist:

Resources:

- http://www.rebol.com- corporate site, you will find docs linked
there

- http://www.rebol.net- developer's central. Sadly site was much
more rich, but there was a server crash some time ago. But - still
valuable rources - test releases, Carl's blogs, RAMBO bug database
etc.

I believe in Carl's vision "REBOL is perfect for lightweight distributed
applications". Users need light-weight responsive gui clients that
can work both online and offline. The evolution of the Web is moving
(slowly) in this direction, with AJAX/Flash/JavaFX as examples of
a more responsive and rich gui clients, BUT it's too complex and
unreliable. The industry is adding kludge upon kludge to "fix" the
problems resulting in further complexity and code bloat, but what
is needed is a clean approach that captures the essence of what made
the web a phenomal success in the first place - any body could set
up/develop a web site and they did. Enterprise data centers need
scalable, reliable, manageable (server) applications that run 24x7
on commodity hardware ata reasonable price. The user PC's should
require zero management for the applications, which is the primary
(only?) attraction of the web ui. Question if the application is
simple to manage and delivers the functionality the user wants, why
do they need a fat complex os? As an example my kids get online to
play games, research homework, etc. and they hate it (so do I) when
the PC/OS gets in the way. Also, that PC/OS is a major source of
trouble with viruses and lack of (simple) control to what my kids
can access.

RayA; I'm of two minds on this one. I'm attempting to show construction
site bosses

how to be 'good' REBOL programmers. Very simple, data driven code
sequences.

If you want to be a 'good REBOL' programmer, hang out here and watch
for posts

from the likes of Anton, Henrik, Gregg, Ashley, well...most of the
players here.

But a 'good' REBOL programmer can be anyone, in my humble opinion.

I've never heard of such a script, Steeve.

It does not seem to be on REBOLtech (a forerunner to REBOL.org).
You could try some more detailed searches than I did if you want
to look further

****

Sadly, a lot of good stuff gets published on personal websites, and
when the enthusiasm for REBOL wanes, or the site is taken offline
for some reason, the scripts are lost to the wider community.

yes, we have very good mysql driver, I wonder why it is not submitted
there. IIRC I talked to Doc about it, and he told me, that some time
ago it was there, but then mySQL IIRC redesigned site or something
like that. He wated to wait for 1.0 release. It is now released,
works with latest incarnations, so maybe we could ask Doc to submit
it to mysql.com folks? Or just to get his approval to do so? It would
be nice, if rebol would be listed there ...
Dockimbel:
16-Sep-2006
The new MySQL web site is much less third-parties friendly. It looks
like MySQL doesn't want to give much attention on alternatives drivers.
They want ppl to use their own drivers and nothing other. The new
MySQL protocol licence is more restrictive than before. They described
a GPLed protocol concept (which a IMO, a very stupid concept...)
See : http://dev.mysql.com/doc/internals/en/licensing-notice.html
Dockimbel:

Of course, I didn't use the protocol documentation on the web site

Good news / bad news

The good news is that MS are beta-ing Internet Explorer 7, so it's
a good chance to see how well your website may look in that browser
(like it or not it is liekly to become a dominent browser)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/default.mspx

The bad news is two-fold: they have fixed most of the well-known
CSS hacks; if you use the hacks your site may not render properly
in IE7. Second, it is not easy to install IE7 alongside any existing
IE version -- it's a reversible upgrade (in theory), so you might
want to try it on a spare partition/machine.

Windows only at this stage, of course.

 I'm not! ;)

I've been testing four different browsers on my Mac (Safari, Opera,
Firefox and Firefox PPC - http://www.furbism.com/firefoxmac/) and
while the PPC build is 9.5MB compared to Opera's 5.5MB (which also
includes M2 mail), it is noticeably faster than the other browsers
and has not crashed once since I installed it 2 weeks ago. The only
problem I've encountered is with my !@#$%^& bank's IE-only site (even
with Opera I have to change spoof modes depending upon which particular
page of the site I'm at, and Safari works fine except when the site
tries to open a PDF statement within the browser using an Adobe Reader
plugin – never mind the fact that Mac handles PDF natively ... !@#$%&).

MikeL:

Sorry about the CRLF ..... you don't want to be checking the timestamps
on the server with a slow connection. Just hold the last updated
value locally and if it changes then transfer the file. Same for
deleting ... else you spend all of your time checking on the server
over a slow connection. You could check the timestamps or hash
the local value ... then if the hash value of the source changes,
transfer the updated version. There's some code to do some of
this in build-sie.r http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/view-script.r?script=build-site.r
 but it's a rebol-ish task.
Louis:

Henrik:

if you are on an unreliable or slow connection, you might experience
timeouts which will in turn cause network errors. I recently worked
on a similar system and you have to basically wrap all code that
access the internet in TRY and do a lot of error trapping and possibly
some retrying to ensure that uploads and downloads of entire filesets
are done correctly. The code in build-site.r will not do that, so
you have to restart the upload if it fails.

Javascript only links will stop pretty much every spider.....So you
won't appear in many search engines at all.

You will also be breaking a lot of people's assistive technologies
(like screen readers for visually disabled people).

Best to have a site that is fully navigable via plain HTML links.
Then add the clever stuff on top of that.

This might be a stretch, a leap of faith or something that may fail
or not. I've made an entry in Wikibooks for REBOL, which basically
allows anyone to write a book about REBOL. There are books on many
other languages on the site and I thought that this could give REBOL
two things: 1. A book and 2. Exposure.

The Gripe:

Go here www.Rebol.org, then go here: http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/,
then here: http://java.sun.com/, hell even go here, http://msdn.microsoft.com/vbasic/,
now go back to www.Rebol.com

Even if you don't know what the language is or does, do you want
to go to Rebol.org? The main page looks like the last page in the
basement of a website. Almost like an "error page"

O There is no single location for all Rebol information.

O Rebol.net, Rebol.com, and Rebol.org are spread out and run by RT.
O There is no pizzas!
O I don't "feel" community when I visit these sites.

I know I'm not talking to my audience when I say; "think of this
like a night club" but this is what this is all about. People want
to "be where the fun is happening." Even programmers.

My Suggestion:

O We need a site controlled by the developers.

O We need a forum where people can bitch and meet each other, and
feel welcome.

O The site needs to have a consistent dynamic attractive template.

O The site needs to be a clearing house for all other sites. Teach
and directing people to all the resources.

O The site needs to paint a picture as opposed to describe everything
with a thousand words.

What is entailed:

O Start a new site, I would propose "RebolCentral.com" I'm willing
to pay for it, but I don't want to be in charge of it, I suggest
we make it a committee.

O The main page should cover every topic and reason anyone would
come to the site. This means we support every country and other
site. The idea here is a clearing house of centralized information.

O News: The site needs to gather news worthy information and post
that at the top. The site is not alive unless people have a way
to post their information. This means that there needs to be at
least one editor, if not several that share the task. Every time
a product is updated, the new features are mentioned. When Carl
updates his blog, it gets a single sentence directing people there,
unless it is news of a release of something. Etc.

O Product Reviews: This is key. Products need to be rated, reviewed,
categorized, voted on.

O Video Archive: All the videos of all the talks ever given

O Tutorials: there are a lot of tutorials out there, but which are
best? We need to review the tutorials, rate them by Beginner, Intermediate,
Advanced.

O Forum: Start with major topics, and then break it down. The forum
needs to direct people to other countries, or support the other countries
right in the forum. Great simple forum: http://discussion.treocentral.com/index.php?styleid=1

O Respect the real estate. The #1 mistake people make is treating
their websites like just pages. This is just like real estate, location
location location. We need to place the content based on where people
are going. So you build the basic site, watch it for a couple of
weeks, then shift things around based on where people are actually
going.

O More art, more photos, more community. It needs to feel inviting:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/events/pdc/

Stone soup:

I will pay for, host, and supply a fast linux system (w/archive).

I will help design the templates, and provide (and buy if needed)
great art for the site.

I will not run the site, nor control the content, but I expect there
to be in place all the items outlined above, set up in a manner that
it a) runs itself, b) puts the power in the hands of the developers.

In teh readme.txt it could be usefull to make some text about your
web site; You can find illustration about how to use rengu in tour.r
file and you can refeer to http://www.dobeash.com/reguifor complete
and detailled documentation. You can contact me directly for any

Ashley, the very first web site I visited .. cnn.com, has these menus
down the left hand side coloured in blue, with the active one in
red.

If you click on the red one ie. the active one, it still refreshes
the page for you.

th only person that can split the licence for a project is teh author
it self and one import thing is to publish the work ... that way
your GPL work will gain public notority the date of publication
into a tiers site like sourceforge or rebol.org can be recieved by
the court as proof of the anteriority of your work upon the derivation
;)

Pekr I don't think so if you see the AGG library web site you will
see lot of example of you to use AGG with SVG ... But there we are
working in C++ and not in REBOL ...

... all good things here - as working cooperation of dev community
with RT should be used as marketing advantage and should be described
on web-site as a good, working model .... that should happen on REBOL.com
- but creating of new site needs real strategy, especially marketing
wise ...

Yes. Something like this atomic modells. Each ball is a site and
you can move along the connections :)

just like we just SEND a mail, READ a web site, or WRITE an ftp server.
if we could also LOAD/SAVE any XML technologies (XML files, DTDs,
Schemas, etc), then R3 would immediately get appeal in the corporate
world. It would actually have value to them .

I'm seeing some possibilities here ... for combining multiple tools
to build web sites. We have Max's Remark which can preprocess scripts
which cuts down considerably on writing web pages, Cheyenne for serving
them up, and Chris' QM to structure the site's logic/display.

I've converted my site to https as well using the above howto ..
only took 2 mins. As you say, I have to generate a new certificate.

I just recently received whole new website for our Xidys site ...
it is - templates, but there is some php code in there, and it sucks
- they did not tell me ;-) Unfortunatelly, templates are easy. They
did a trick, when whole top, bottom section plus left menu is one
template, and content is "included" into the template, according
to what item you choose in the menu. The advantage is - you don't
have repeating part on more than one place. Disadvantage is - when
you want to display the content part, you easily can't, as that template
waits for inclusion, does not have headers, and hence it does not
link to css - that aproach sucks, it does not work without whole
production environment ....

Graham: there's some experimental stuff about that in mod-internal,
but still needs some improvement to be ready to encap a complete
web site in the Cheyenne binary. But that's a planned feature, I'll
provide better support for that in a week or 2.

Other question: how do I create a friendly URL mapping in Cheyenne?
using the publish-site dialect?
Dockimbel:
10-Jun-2007
If you're using Cheyenne in embed-mode, 'publish-site let you define
whatever URL mapping you want. In standalone Cheyenne, there's no
general way to define URL mapping, it's currently up to each module
(CGI, RSP,...) to handle their specific mappings. I'm hoping that
the future mod-rewrite will allow efficient and general URL mapping
(there's a mod-rewrite published by Will, who could already do that).
Dockimbel:

Terry: that's the intended behaviour, if you request /testapp, it
calls the 'testapp function in root object (or 'default func if 'testapp
is not defined), it you request /testapp/, it calls the 'default
function in the 'testapp object. But that's the demo "site", you
can change the behaviour in your own "site" if it doesn't fit your
needs.
Dockimbel:

mod-router: you mean being able to translate the request URLs for
a whole site, based on a sitemap description ?
Dockimbel:
10-Jun-2007
that could be useful when refactoring a whole web site that is already
deeply indexed by search bots and want to keep it's high ranking...

As much as I like the idea of Cheyenne i thing the Rebol plugin is
the future. The adobe and Microsoft solutions seem to bypass HTML.
If R3 can offer aht I think it promises why creat an html base site
if you can make a rebol app and "plug it in" to the site.

Perhaps this is more a chat related issue. How would you feel if
you went to a site index.html (explicitly .html) and later found
out it was actually an rsp file with an .html filename. Is that
dirty-pool in web land? I'm asking as Cheyenne .rsp makes it so
easy to keep track of page hits and there are no <script> tags required
and no redirects etc etc. I haven't turned it on in production peoplecards.ca
as I think it's dirty-pool. Looking for other's opinions.

If you want to play online ... then http://www.playok.com/is an
interesting site. I think it's mainly populated by eastern europeans
though as they chat in russian and other languages from that region
