BrianW: 30-Dec-2004 | Well, if folks are going to be paying attention to that, then I might as well seed my site. "Lies, damn lies, and statistics" I'm telling ya.
BrianW: 30-Dec-2004 | The only statistic I have to gauge things by is hits on my Web site. The Rebol pages are getting more unique visitors than my Ruby pages right now.
BrianW: 31-Dec-2004 | Wow, I've just been blown away by the amount of flak I've gotten from some folks about my attempt at a simplistic Perl tutorial. Same steps and concepts as the others I've written (kind of a theme on my site), but apparently some folks feel that Perl is not appropriate for children. Hm ... maybe they have a point :-)

Group: !AltME ... Discussion about AltME [web-public]
Thør: 2-Apr-2006 | As a new REBOLer, I want to "gather" every bit of information I can get, especially from the posts, but the groups which I believe would be very helpful to me have more than 1000 posts. Through the web site, I can't read the earlier posts, and I get disconnected from the world everytime AltME resyncs these groups. I have noticed that groups with less than 500 posts do get resynced w/o being disconnected; although I had to "force" the resync (that's why I had to post the dot in several groups, as posting in the dot group doesn't sync me to all of the groups).
[unknown: 9]: 11-Apr-2006 | Wow.........it crashes!?! OK guys, you need to shove all this into the Feedback, becuase all I do is copy and paste this stuff over to the site myself, since it is built to track all of this.
[unknown: 9]: 30-Apr-2006 | Please send that to AlteME feedback. In fact since our system for tracking bugs is really good from the site, that is the best place to post bugs. If you have a question though, you are always welcome to ask me directly, I will try to answer what can be answered.

Anton: 24-May-2005 | Yes, Hooray for Romano's FTP! Just remember to disable your previous Romano FTP patch (if you have one) from your user.r. BrianH: 9-Jun-2005 | To whom it may concern, on ticket -304 (currently) I misunderstood the purpose of the Fix field and filled it with prose with no line breaks. Could somebody fix this, perhaps by moving the prose to the Description section? The Fix section doesn't wordwrap, my entry messes up the layout of the Rambo web site.
Anton: 23-Jan-2006 | Then my user.r contains this: use [args] [if args: system/options/args [do first args]] if value? 'do-anton-user? You can find it at: http://www.robertmuench.de/download/make-doc-pro.r The following changes have been made: *Bugs fixed:* #State tracking flags weren't correct, could lead to strange results when using tables where cell text used inline markup. Especially in site-mode. *New Features:* #Code can now be included via ~=include code <filename>~ where the included code will be automatically indented and hence handled like an example by the output format emitter. *Programmatic changes:* #Celeaned up the global word pollution (Thanks to Ahsley Truter) #Renamed ~generate-files~ function to ~scan-doc~ to meet MD2 wording

Group: Dialects ... Questions about how to create dialects [web-public]
Geomol: 11-Jan-2005 | @Chris, I made a HTML3.2 dialect in REBOL at one point. It uses keywords for the optional parameters, and the order or parameters is irrelevant. You can find it, if you start REBOL/View desktop and goto http://home9.inet.tele.dk/johnn/index.r Not much documentation there, I'm afraid, but you can see a small example in the text file at the site. The good thing with the html32 dialect is, that it'll always produce 100% correct html code. If the input has error, you'll see a message.
Geomol: 24-Jun-2007 | I use this guide as a base for the BASIC interpreter: http://www.nvg.ntnu.no/bbc/doc/BBCUserGuide-1.00.pdf I found it on this site: http://www.nvg.ntnu.no/bbc/docs.php3
Maxim: 18-Jun-2010 | Fork, you should make a sort of white paper on the power of Dialecting in REBOL using Rebmu as a reference. Your language shows just how powerfull REBOL's Domain Specific Language capabilities are. Its a result of applying dialecting to a very specific Domain, but its still pretty much General Purpose . I think that If its well written, without bias and personal opinion on REBOL itself, it would make the cut for a nice article on REBOL.com's web site as an article on the subject. its just my POV, but marketing information on this, with factual, non-trivial, examples is very scarce on the REBOL web site. I think Carl would welcome such a complete example. you've litterally transformed the semantics of the language, yet can still interpret it within REBOL.

MikeL: 8-Jul-2005 | One option is to provide commentary text, images and links a few seconds after they are shown. For synchro skating competitions that we can't attend, we follow them using Team Germany's Live Ticker. http://www.teamberlin-1.de/live_frame.php?ev=2&lang=en This is a very slick PHP application that has photos taken at the arena and broadcasts them a few seconds later. Some dedicated fans from Germany were providing the photos (JPEGs), scores and bilingual (at least English and German) commentaries. When new content is published, a message appears at the top to inform the viewer that it is available. They hit the refresh hyperlink and they are up-to-date. From the timestamps, our lag time to Canada was sometimes as low as 45 seconds after the event occurred i.e. we are getting commentary results about a given team's skating while they are still on the ice. This site reports http://www.teamberlin-1.de/en/cup-of-berlin/that 4,000 viewers followed the Berlin Cup in Jan-2005 using Live Ticker. Maybe something like that would work for DevCon2005.

Pekr: 26-Mar-2006 | but now I have another question to brainstorm - I wanted to popularise rebol a bit on OSNews.com - they are very open and their site is being visited some 100K hits a month. I wanted to post View 1.3.2. news, but asked for advice here on AltME, as OS-X port may not be ready for public adoption. On the other hand, other products get posted even with much smaller updates. So the question is - should we post REBOL 3.0 news? Some may say - pots, once there is some product to download. But - REBOL 3.0 is also about documentation, and the announcement Carl posted asks also for C coders and other kind of help. As a side note, we could point ppl to try View 1.3.2 - at least Windows and Linux users could be attracted. What do others think? Should we wait further? But that way we will not get any publicity ever ....

Group: Postscript ... Emitting Postscript from REBOL [web-public]
Graham: 7-Apr-2006 | PostScript normally uses units of "points" for placing graphics on the page. I find it more convenient to work with centimeters. I got the following snippet of PostScript code from a public domain program called "GLE" which I believe is available at any large ftp site; I recommend this graphics program. By examining the PostScript output of that program I collected the following piece of PostScript code: matrix currentmatrix /originmat exch def /umatrix {originmat matrix concatmatrix setmatrix} def [28.3465 0 0 28.3465 10.5 100.0] umatrix What this basically does is rescale the page so that now all following commands will work as if the centimeter is the basic unit of length. This places (0,0) near the bottom left of the page and (21,24) near the top right of the page. If you don't do this, then (0,0) is the bottom left corner of the page and (612,792) is the top right corner of the page (if you are using an 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch sheet of paper). These are the default PostScript units; 72 of these to an inch. 28.3465 to a centimeter, thus the numbers above in the last line of PostScript code.

Davide: 6-Jun-2006 | Using Internet Explorer Init with: var rebPlug = new ActiveXObject("Rebol.Application"); rebPlug.LaunchURL="http://site/script.r"; After use it in html something like: <input type="button" value ="Execute" onliclick="rebPlug.eval('myrebcode [a b c]') />
BrianH: 16-Jun-2006 | Is the plugin served from an HTTPS site? It would be nice to avoid man-in-the-middle attacks. I'm always a little wary of putting non-SSL sites on the trusted sites list. For that matter, when you have one site serving the html and script, and another serving the plugin, which site needs to be trusted, as far as the major browsers are concerned? I would think just the plugin serving site, but I don't quite remember right now...
JoshM: 19-Jun-2006 | Here's a few general notes: * You absolutely MUST uninstall the previous release completely (by closing down your browser, maybe restarting, etc.) before attempting to install the new release. Otherwise, you're asking for major trouble. * You must change LaunchURL in *both* the EMBED and OBJECT tags. * Old demos don't work with the new plugin, and practically no existing site will work with FF. This is because FF requires the EMBED tag.
Pekr: 15-Aug-2006 | Josh - could rebol plug-in release be coordinated with us here? Sometimes RT simply released stuff suddenly, so we could not comment further. Mine idea is to get some kind of coordination for plug-in script submission page. It is in unpleasant state. I vote for carefully choosing WHAT script will be presented on main site. We have now chance for kind of wow effect, which will not be created, if we don't choose coolest scripts imo. We should look in various demo sections of Desktop, as well as contest and simply be sure, that posted stuff works out of the box ....
Louis: 14-Sep-2006 | It will be public when I put it on my web site. Once I am sure it will work with the plugin I will release the source here.
Maxim: 14-Sep-2006 | or post it on a reb site ?

Maxim: 6-Feb-2007 | but if the plugin had a properties page, we could allow some scripts domains or ip addresses specific rights. all set to off by default. and all prefs values encrypted when saved of sent to registry, so that no virii or other nasty can allow its site to run unhindered.

Graham: 9-Oct-2008 | the fax is on a remote site and will be converted to png by imagemagick
DideC: 10-Oct-2008 | I looks like events are flowing too much. I guess events have to "traverse" the browser and then go to view.dll. Maybe you should try an event filtering like romano/gabriele's one. eat.r is in rebol.org, but is old. I think there was an earlier version somewhere (Romano's web site : url ?)

NickA: 19-Dec-2008 | Pekr, I did post here and the mailing list. The whole idea of the virtual DevCon evolved quickly and informally, so I apologise if it's been confusing. Since the idea was suggested very near the proposed DevCon date, I tried to help organize things a bit at http://rockfactory.us/events/devcon.html , but my efforts have been personal and not necessarily agreed upon by any of the community. We probably should have appointed an official group of organizers and created a web site first, but in the interest of trying to things done, I just moved ahead and posted my suggestions here and on the mailing list - I hope there've been no disagreements or concerns about any of that. DideC, as it stands, my intention is to make 100-150 connections available to http://rockfactory.us/rooms/room22 . At this point, it seams reasonable to leave it open - if anyone thinks we should expect more than 100 people, then I'll need to know soon. I'd appreciate a head count of people in the French community who plan to attend. Amacleod, the broadcast system at http://rockfactory.us/rooms/room22 seems to be the best available solution. I'm leaving that room available until the event, so that presenters can become familiar with it. To make it easier for others to use the system, please remember to close the broadcast page when you're done using it, and please try to conserve bandwidth to only what's necessary to become familiar and comfortable with the system. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Reichart: 19-Dec-2008 | Thanks, Chris is more talented than me, he ight take a swipe at it. I think this one is a little too "blocky" and a bit childlike. But it might be a good start, and it is designed to be SUPER simple to build as a site, with nothing but flat HTML files. In fact, I could build this out of just several Wikis.
Brock: 20-Dec-2008 | I really like the idea of the virtual DevCon. It would be neat if we could then build ourselves a site similar to this Microsoft's LEARN site. http://www.asp.net/learn/default.aspx?wwwaspnetrdirset=1
NickA: 20-Dec-2008 | I'm completely open to whatever the community decides to do :) It's probably not such a bad thing to keep this first presentation smallish, and to consider it a learning experience. One thing that's clear so far is that it'd be good to decide on one or several people to manage operations officially, and to create a web site to organize future events. For the time being, this event does appear to be shaping up well, for the short matter of days we've spent contemplating it :) There are 19 live attendees signed up at http://rockfactory.us/events/devcon.html . We appear to have a viable way to make the presentation, and I'm looking forward to seeing anyone who has the time and motivation to speak about REBOL related topics :)
yeksoon: 23-Dec-2008 | late to the party. so, where to I go to sign up to join the DevCon? Or do I just pop into some web site and view the presentation?
BrianH: 27-Dec-2008 | Chris, your site also needs a link to the conference location, perhaps in the Where section.
BrianH: 27-Dec-2008 | I don't know the url of the video conference. That is why I was looking at your site in the first place (though it's nice).
Chris: 27-Dec-2008 | Btw: it seems that the url for the 2007 DevCon has changed. I'll try and keep http://2007.rebolconf.infopointed to the correct site... Alternately, if whoever maintains the 2007 DevCon pages wishes me to host them under the above address, I'll be happy to...
[unknown: 5]: 28-Dec-2008 | I suggest another addon to the Devcon site called MyDevCon where people can post their own videos of demostrations of their products. I know Graham has done video presentations of his efforts before. Would be nice to see how some of these projects work in the interim. |
