Thanks. i try my best, but Altme and IOS are minority products, so 
they've got to be better than good to get to a shortlist..
Altme has at least three ways of losing data.

And having to rename the world every time there is a server crash 
doesn't make this group a useful reference site.

Why does everyone try it that way, Anton?

None from me, but no one answered why peeps use site/whatever instead 
of join site {whatever}

Just curious if it looked up the site for a directory. part of my 
rebol editor I am working on.

is there a site with files I could look at? (just seems there would 
be a very simple way to do this without much problem) sorry I am 
not familiar with md2 (guess the enterprise work distracts me too 
much...;-(

Apologies -- REBOL.org was unavailable for just under a day, it's 
back now.

The problem originated with the ISP, and it took them a little while 
to work out what they'd done wrong.

Using a "non-standard" language seems to have added to their debug 
time:

As Carl mentioned in Announcemements:

www.rebol.org is being moved by the ISP to a faster server.  I'm 
not sure they understand what's really involved, so it is very likely 
that the site is going to break.


I'm just going to set the site to read-only, as I am not sure they 
will be able to backup and copy everything while we are adding ML 
posts, scripts etc.  I hope normal service wiill be resumed asap!

REBOL.org died last night because:

 -- the ISP copied the entire site in preparation for a server migration

 -- that doubled our disk usage ..... and took us over our disk space 
 quota
 -- so all file writes failed

 -- but they failed by writing zero byte length files. result data 
 loss and corruption of indexes
We are now restored and back up and running.


The server migration is still to come. As Carl says, it may  break 
things in other ways.

We lost no data.


But we lost the site for a little while.....Little things like this 
built up:
    -- you try to login
    -- we update your last-active time

    -- but that file write completely trashed your user-profile record

  -- we upload some more posts from this AltME world

  -- as we write them into our index data structures, it corrupts the 
  index, thus making the whole
     AltME archive unavailable.

Corrupt-on-write is a hard mode to recover from :-)

I checked the user list and "Ashley" isn't displayed. This could 
be or one of three reasons:
1. You requested privacy when you first joined.
2. You used another name.
3. You membership expired


If I remember correctly memberships can expire if you haven't added 
a script to the library and haven't logged in to the site in the 
last six months.

Thanks, So did I -- I uploaded one changed cgi script as part of 
the sea trials for the new site. And suddenly it all went dark.
Back now.....Not sure what happened, yet.

is the site built using only nested table elements?

Good news -- no absolutely positiioned DIVs, so it is a fairly fluid 
layout, will flow easily into most window size.


Bad news -- main frame of site is a table. Originally, it was nested 
DIVs but that caused some layout problems when displaying <pre> sections 
of code. Going to a table was a quick fix that has never been looked 
at again.

It would be great for us to have a little "rent-a-reboler" site, 
at which anyone wanting REBOL features like this (or even scripts 
- any sort of development work), could post a job and developers 
could reply with bids.  That could give RT motivation to add features 
that only certain users are interested in initially, and I bet we'd 
see lots of features get added to REBOL3 as extensions.  I'd love 
to support REBOL by paying for little features that I need/want. 
 Animated GIFs are not a priority for me, but I can think of at least 
10 low level functions that I'd buy.

Thanks Oldes, Peter and Petr for the Rebbies nomination. If I win, 
I will of course use my year to work with children and animals for 
world peace. However, it would be better to honour someone who has 
been more active in 2010; my REBOL work has been a bit sparse this 
year. So good luck to all the nominees!


Anyway, enough of self-promotion. Oldes nomination citation notes 
that he does not like the look of REBOL.org. That's a widely shared 
sentiment, and I have much sympathy for the view.


However, REBOL.org is to some extent skinnable – look here, if you 
are logged on, for user-contributed alternative CSS schemes:

The current look'n'feel came about by a competition for a better 
look (won by Roland Hadinger) a few years ago. And it is MUCH better 
than what we had before!


If anyone wants to craft an alternative look'n'feel, please feel 
free.


Of course, just changing the CSS is not everything: contents of menus, 
access paths, etc may need tweaking to work well with a new look. 
I am happy to play along with any suggestions that may help anyone 
who is devising a site make-over.

Oh and for your information don't tell me that this all text wonder 
site is done for small device !! I have small device  like a smartphone 
and this is stupidly unreadable on it !!!

rebol.org is run mostly by ONE VOLUNTEER.  free, with hundreds of 
scripts, with thousands of features to support.  Adding a script 
to rebol.org doesn't *require* the full library header anymore.

I wonder how many hundred hours went into that huge site.   


I'm sorry if it took you one hour to write down 5 lines of text, 
but It doesn't take me that long.  I agree its not optimal, but the 
help page is simple and conscice.

well, just talk about it with him and surely, if you have the time 
he may let you help him.   you can already re-skin the site to make 
it look better.  I just don't have the time nowadays.

the trouble is, I need to send rebol plus script to other site, so 
testing will be very tough .... hmm, maybe there is no other better 
way than to actually do so ....

btw - other site will use rebol plus mysql script in terms of Cron 
job - how should I launch it? I hope they know how to define Cron 
job, as I don't know ... should it be similar to CGI script? Or? 
Simply "cron script" calls something like \path\to\rebol\rebol \path\to\my-script\myscript.r? 
What arguments eventually? -s?

I would like to know the result guys, as I am about to create scripts 
for the partner site, and if I fail, bye bye rebol - the trouble 
simply is - they told us - if you want to sync data to us, prepare 
import utilities for us. So - I would still have to do the job, just 
using php or simply something else - which would be a big time loss, 
as I never used it before ....

the trouble also is, remote site may not be willing to use old-fashioned 
passwords ... what then? No guru to adapt mySQL driver? Any pointers 
to new authentication methods?

I better contacted our partner site to ask them, if we could use 
old method, or I am screwed with rebol then ...

hopefully the same problem exists even for php folks, so I hope our 
partner site will not send me to hell with rebol ;-)

What AtheOS site are you trying? The original atheos.cx domain and 
site are hijacked by some thug selling drugs. Our archive of the 
original site was on the Scandinavian server, so it's down

the iso image is compressed with bz2, and now I have to find a japanese 
web site that has lzarc to decompress the bloody thing

7Zip is only 1 MB, has a normal English web site and is open source

If they wanted to support Debian, they would have provided a .deb 
- .tar.gz packages always need a little hacking. They do document 
their restrictions on their web site.

However, the parts of the site that are not in MySQL are still functional

I also built the floppy set, and figured I would use my own local 
Debian archivel site from a different local machine.  So, mounted 
the DVD on one system and published it with HTTP, and the floppy 
boot worked, found the host, but the installer rejected the archive.

well, it is really handy ... it is SQL, that is importand ... and 
it is completly portable - imagine having small apps, you just need 
cgi-bin site and you can have your rebol app wherever .... no need 
for admin to configure mysql for you, etc., I like it. For small 
to middle stuff it is pretty ok ...

I just looked at the Eudora web site and this is a big problem with 
Eudora.  They tell how to delete the index files to let the program 
rebuild them. But if that doesn't work they say:


If the mailbox does not display your old mail or if Eudora crashes, 
the mailbox is irreparably damaged or corrupted.


You can make a final ditch effort to try to recover the text of the 
email. With Eudora completely closed, go to the backup of the .MBX 
that you saved in Step #4 above. Open that .MBX with a Text Editor, 
like Notepad or Wordpad. If there's any recoverable data, a Text 
Editor may be able to read it.

According to their web site, the only way to avoid losing data in 
such a case is to compact the files daily. No one is going to do 
that,

You can do some structural pattern matching with parse rules, but 
with how parse is currently implemented it can be a little awkward. 
The lack of arguments to parse rules make recursion quite difficult, 
and the lack of local variables make the rules difficult to use concurrently. 
It is difficult to examine both the data type and the value of elements 
in block parsing, to switch to string parsing mode for string elements, 
to parse lists, hashes or parens, to direct the parse flow based 
on semantic criteria (which is needed to work around any of these 
other problems).


And don't even get me started on the difficulties of structure rebuilding. 
The thing that is the most difficult to do in parse is the easiest 
thing to do with regexes: Search and replace. Didn't we make a web 
site years ago collecting suggestions for improving parse? Wasn't 
a replace operation one of those suggestions? What happened with 
that?


Structural pattern matching and rebuilding currently has to be done 
with a mix of parse and REBOL code that is tricky to write and debug. 
If parse doesn't get improved, I'd rather use a nice declarative 
dialect, preferably with before and after structures, and have the 
dialect processor generate the parse and REBOL code for me. If that 
dialect is powerful enough to be written in itself then we'll really 
be cooking.

By the way, some of the content on the DevCon2004 section of the 
rebol.net site apparently didn't make it to the new server. 403s 
abound.

Check the manufacturer's web site before you but the laptop. If you 
can download all necessary drivers and utilities from their web site 
you might be in luck. Make sure that all bundled applications have 
installers included with the laptop, rather than restore disks. Before 
you wipe the laptop, check it for install directories and archive 
them - and run test installs on another computer to make sure the 
installers work.

Olivier Auverlot proposes to add its Magic! script to the Powerpack. 
Magic! is a CGI handler that dramaticaly simplify the creation of 
dynamic web site "à la" PHP.

Version 3.5 is in the pipeline and will be release soon. But doc 
is in French AFAIK, so need to be translate before.

is there a site for PowerPack..where I can have a look at what it 
encompasses?

Did someone make a web site for the Power Pack, or is it a dead project?

I've spent quite a bit of time looking at Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) 
and it seems to be the only / best SVG game in town (their command-line 
driven SVG to PNG conversion seems to be particularly well regarded). 
Looking forward to their 0.42 release as it supports OS/X as well.


The Clip Art site that they link to (http://www.openclipart.org/) 
is also a treasure trove of Public Domain files (which solves the 
GPL concerns I had with many of the dedicated KDE / Gnome icon sets). 
I'm also looking forward to their release 15 which seems to be just 
around the corner.


Lots of good news in the SVG world, I wonder how long before mainstream 
browsers start supporting it? (without plugins).

Hello Denis,


So, one of the things a group of us have been talking about is doing 
some group lessons (world wide).


We have researched some tools for making this possible.  We narrowed 
it down to Macromedia's Breeze.  In fact last week I talked for about 
2 hours with their team (meaning the people that actually designed 
and programmed it).


This week I'm talking to their OEM leads about integrating Breeze 
from Rebol into Web applications.


So our first Breeze interactive lesson will be in a few weeks is 
my guess.  WE have not idea how good it will be with more than 10 
people, and world wide, but we are going to try.


As to a road map.  Programming languages in general are difficult 
to learn in a methodical method.  Rebol being even more difficult 
(in my opinion), because learning the structure does not help very 
much.  Even learning how Rebol works is not all that usefull (compared 
to lets say Basic, or a Batching system).

I will make some simple suggestions though:


1.	Go to Rebol.com, and read what is offered there.  It actually 
is a good starting point.  Rebol Essentials" which is a PDF on the 
site is worth reading.


2.	Write your own dictionary.  Literally, pick a given word in Rebol, 
use it in a sentence.  And just work your way through all 400+ words. 
 You can do it in a few hours.  All you need to do is try to use 
it in a way the Rebol Dictionary does not use it.



3.	Build something you really want to build.  Unless you have a goal, 
working on anything is going to be boring.  Think of a utility, or 
a game that you have always wanted to understand better, or want 
to play with, and build it.  Another cool concept is to simply copy 
it from an existing version in some other language you already know, 
or that is more simple (like Basic).

Pekr, given your level, what is there to learn in XML.  "you" site 
down for 1 hour, read about, furrow your eyebrow, and your done.

Denis, this might be so obviouse that no one mentions it............but 
AltME is written 100% in Rebol, as is our massive online site Qtask.

the better way to gauge useage is not by frequency within one script 
but by useage amongst many scripts... where useage within that script 
many times still only counts as one.  I'd use the rebol.org site 
to scan scripts from any given group and put usage from them.  Thus 
networking would score view as almost 0 where gui would place view 
as the most used word (in every script)

Interesting.  Is there a site to play with?

the netvibes site is nice, but the problem is still the same, - you 
have to do it in old way as well, if you want to make pages for more 
people then net-freaks

With PHP all the oomph is in the server , so it is under your control. 
As you cannot guarantee that JS will be available in the client if, 
extra steps are needed to ensure the website works without it -- 
even though it may work spectacularly better with it.

There are three aspects that make Ajax apps compelling: 1) distribution 
is easy, with no installation, one click away from any web site; 
2) the environment is consistent, rich and predictable; 3) Remotely 
accessible, one does not have to own a computer, or even have disk 
access,  to resume using an app (classic example, using a library 
to use a web mail app).

Not everyone can or will install Silverlight, and not every site 
can insist that their customers do so. MS developer tools division 
tries to support whatever their developers want to do on MS development 
platforms like ASP.NET. AJAX needs JS frameworks.

  MySQL 5.0 Adds Features for Enterprise Developers and DBAs

a commercial SQL database management system (DBMS) know its MySQL 
that's gaining on them. With an already large installed base, MySQL 
is set to attract new users because of the feature set of version 
5.0. It includes capabilities for which developers have often turned 
to commercial SQL products.


The purposes for which we use personal, mobile, workgroup, departmental, 
enterprise and web databases are diverse. Application requirements 
are a primary determinant of the capacity and features we need from 
an SQL DBMS. For example, a high-volume transaction processing web 
site places greater demands on a database than a contact list manager 
for laptops and small business servers.


A Web Techniques magazine article, "Web Databases: Fun with Guests 
or Risky Business?" discussed features that characterize an industrial-grade 
SQL DBMS. It explained SQL security and mission-critical databases, 
defined as


    "A database is mission critical if its lack of data integrity has 
    serious consequences, such as causing the loss of customers or even 
    lives."


Maintaining data integrity is implicit -- that's a prime directive 
for a DBMS. The article explained other features that enterprise 
developers look for in an SQL platform:


    ... mission-critical applications require features such as intrinsic 
    security, transaction journaling, concurrency controls and the ability 
    to enforce data integrity constraints. Without those features, you 
    do not have secure, robust databases. Connecting a database to a 
    Web server adds other requirements, such as a multithreaded architecture 
    and the ability to do database backups without taking the server 
    down.


    Freeware and PC DBMSs are suitable for certain classes of applications, 
    but not for high-volume Web sites and mission-critical databases. 
    In any case, don't bet your business, or lives, on such software 
    unless you have the source code and the expertise to understand and 
    repair it.


Since that article appeared in print, improvements to MySQL have 
removed the "not ready for prime time" label. Features described 
in that article are now available to MySQL users:

    * transactions
    * concurrency control, locking, SQL standard isolation levels
    * intrinsic security
    * integrity constraints
    * thread-based memory allocation.

MySQL uses separate threads to handle TCP/IP and named pipes connections, 
authentication, signaling, alarms and replication. The combination 
of threaded architecture and MySQL clustering provides powerful parallel

A decade of development has moved MySQL out of the bare-bones DBMS 
category, enlarged its user base, and turned MySQL AB into a profitable 
company. One of the important milestones was integration of the InnoDB

tables greater than 4GB and support for transaction processing. Other 
enhancements included OpenGIS spatial data types and hot backups.

MySQL 5.0, the newest version, is a major milestone. There have been 
enhancements to the tool sets, storage engines, types and metadata. 
 MySQL 5.0 includes features enterprise developers have come to expect 
from commercial SQL products.

MySQL has a demonstrated capacity for managing very large databases.

reservation system. It replicates 10-60 gigabytes per day from its 
master database to a MySQL server farm. The MySQL databases are used 
to support a shopping application that can accommodate a million 
fare changes per day."

Gaining root access to a Mac is 'easy pickings', according to an 
individual who won an OS X hacking challenge last month by gaining 
root control of a machine using an unpublished security vulnerability. 
On February 22, a Sweden-based Mac enthusiast set his Mac Mini as 
a server and invited hackers to break through the computer's security 
and gain root control, which would allow the attacker to take charge 
of the computer and delete files and folders or install applications. 
Within hours of going live, the 'rm-my-mac' competition was over. 
The challenger posted this message on his Web site: "This sucks. 
Six hours later this poor little Mac was owned and this page got 
defaced".

It sounds like you should add your own field for insert order. I 
don't think that RebDB keeps the records in the order it inserts 
them. Even its web site says that it sorts the records when selecting 
- this isn't Access you know. If you want to keep some information 
in the database, put it there.

I was just reading the User Guide on that site and I noticed that 
there were some parts of the docs on the DESCRIBE function that you 
seemed to have some questions about, particularly the meaning of 
some of the returned columns. (Sorry if I am in error about that.)


- On the table column listing, the notnull column refers to whether 
you are allowed to insert a NULL in that column. The pk column tells 
you whether the column is a primary key. Primary keys in SQLite are 
always integer and are their way of doing autonumber fields.


- On the indexes listing, a unique index also makes sure that the 
combination of values that the index applies to won't be duplicated 
in the table.

Maxim, how much further have you developed GLayout since the  site 
was updated?

A suggestion: put the working full script as a downloadable file 
(rebol.org or a link from liquid site) at the beginning of the page. 
I did the example step by step following the page and, at the endo 
of my tests I found the full script I colud copy and paste!!!

ok, well I have to log off, but I agree.  The liquid part of my site, 
has a usefull simple tutorial, but it needs more advanced examples 
and stuf, and that's where I'm at now  :-)

I remember reading on an Amiga gaming site that you can uplaod large 
files but need to go thru a process with youtube first and then all

match the official DevCon site).  I'd be obliged if willing DevCon 
attendees would create pages with revelations and announcements from 
the conference, and also if non-attendees could help keep it organised.

Im not sure if SL has video broadcasting without going to a web site

I'd go for something low-bandwidth, perhaps relayed from the devcon 
site to rebol.net where the bandwidth is higher for broadcasting. 
I would much rather have reliable text messaging than fuzzy or unclear 
video or audio that drops out once in a while. Hey, that sounds like 
AltME. :-)

at Amiga shows there are radio interviews. for Apple keynotes, since 
Apple stopped broadcasting live video, various sites just update 
an AJAX based site with text and images and it works OK.
