Andreas: 13-Feb-2013 | Regarding the "portal", I fear I have to agree with sqlab so far. The approach of just wholesale copying in or duplicating information from other primary sources strikes me as particularly bad. For example: http://rebol.informe.com/wiki/view/REBOL_2_Guide This just copies over the "REBOL Programming" wikibook: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/REBOL_Programming However, it does so, without _any_ attribution at all, giving people no hint where as to the primary source for that information. Second, it is a one-off import which is not being kept up to date, so really just muddies the information out there. For example, Ladislav recently updated the "mold" article [1], but where is that reflected in the rip-off? [1] http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/REBOL_Programming/mold I strongly suggest that this wholesale importing of other information is stopped or maybe even undone. Otherwise you'll just create more stale information. Just a link to to the primary sources really is the better approach. If you want this site to take off, create _new_ information; this way, you'll actually _add_ value.
DocKimbel: 1-Mar-2013 | Nick: in your business_programming.html page, I think your missing a % character in following code line: do mysql-107.rip
AdrianS: 10-Apr-2013 | Well, thank Graham - he did all the work. All I did was rip it apart! :-)

Maxim: 3-Jul-2012 | like I said , right now I can't rip it out easily because a lot of the code is shared with the code it serves (which is not part of the open source package). It wasn't built with the task of making it independent... but it can be done. It just takes time, which I currently don't have.
Group: !REBOL3 ... General discussion about REBOL 3 [web-public]
Cyphre: 26-Feb-2013 | Henrik, I was more thinking to rip the old zlib code out of Rebol and put there some more actual(or even smaller) implementation (latest zlib or miniz etc.)
Pekr: 26-Feb-2013 | I am fully for new, more standard way. I e.g. did not like .RIP format. E.g. Winamp uses normal zip format for their skin modules, etc. I would like to just hit enter or double click, getting into the archive/package.
Henrik: 26-Feb-2013 | Pekr, I don't think .RIP was meant for basic temporary compression, but a more fully fledged file format to store serialized REBOL data efficiently?
Pekr: 26-Feb-2013 | Henrik - RIP was crap :-)
Pekr: 26-Feb-2013 | Well, then I am wrong, ok. Not sure .rip format was anything in common with app state serialisation. I thought it was just plain and simple packaging mechanism - having a header, and binary container for compressed app modules/scripts ...
Henrik: 26-Feb-2013 | (and if it turns out, that it was not the goal with .rip, then the goal should be changed to do this)
Pekr: 26-Feb-2013 | Then we talk two different things though. But - don't push anything like .rip on me, just to package my app. I want more transparent way, a zip archive I can inspect in Total Commander, Windows Explorer, etc.
Henrik: 26-Feb-2013 | I would not want that a requirement for .rip anyway.
Pekr: 26-Feb-2013 | Oldes - we don't mix anything. It was zip vs rip discussion. I say - let's .rip RIP :-)
Oldes: 26-Feb-2013 | regarding zip versus rip - I can imagine runable zip - just add special file in it which would be used as a starter - actually that's how works for example APK, which is zip with different extension.
Henrik: 26-Feb-2013 | I say - let's .rip RIP :-) - how can you say this, when we want a way to store application states?
Pekr: 26-Feb-2013 | store them in zip, simply some storage format inspectable from other tools. I still don't understand, what is so special on rip, it is imo just a storage format, nothing special.
Oldes: 26-Feb-2013 | It's quite a long time I used rip last time so my memory may be faded out, what do you mean with the application states?
Pekr: 26-Feb-2013 | Henrik - maybe you meant a Rebin format? I really thoght, that .rip is just packaged scripts with header in order to being runnable? So I would like to ask about the app states too?
Pekr: 26-Feb-2013 | Well, rebin was not imo finished, even for R3, although maybe R3 was closer to get to that idea. IIRC .rip appeared somewhere around IOS times, as a means of package scripts. It was imo a typical way of Carl, introduce his own way, instead of going with some "standard", e.g. zip.
Henrik: 26-Feb-2013 | OK, then sorry, I was wrong. As far as .rip is concerned, then it should be some kind of installer, for it to be justified.
NickA: 26-Feb-2013 | I'm ALL for using a standard compression format. Then with a little work, .rip files could basically be SFX files. That would enable a super simple packaging method for delivery of executable REBOL applications.
BrianH: 26-Feb-2013 | R3's existing compressed scripts feature is better than RIP already, so we can safely let that fall into history.
Bo: 12-Mar-2013 | If this was a language designed to promote "proper" programming, I could see having constraints on every function to keep them from being used in new ways, and to promote the proper usage of the function. However, in real life, flexibility is key. Let me know if this makes any sense: If I want to rip the fender off my car and fashion it into a medieval helmet, physics allows me to do so (if I had the requisite skill). However, in programming languages, this type of thing would rarely be possible. So what I'm saying is this: Try as much as possible to refrain from placing software developers in a box when it comes to how they might choose to use a function or a feature. |

Reichart: 31-Oct-2008 | Also, what are the best tools to rip a DVD to an AVI file on Windows. The trick here is (well, a) Windows), but more importantly, that the AVI will have proper keyframes, which seems to be the problem. All the systems we have played with produce AVIs you CAN'T skip through.
Reichart: 1-Nov-2008 | Two things: = The subtle question = We have played with a lot of software, and ALL of them (that we have tried) have failed to produce a final product that works. Meaning, all players (WMplayer, WinAmp, VLC, etc.) do not allow skipping, and, again, keep in mind, this is using Windows tools to Rip, and then encode (usually two products have to be used ). I make this clear because I'm not questioning that this can be done correctly from Linux (or perhaps Mac even). So my question is really "[are you sure] from windows you can produce a 700m avi from a DVD that allows skipping [keyframes] on Windows?" Our search of forums tells us others have the same problem, and people eventually give up and go to linux. (Warning, rant ahead) :) = The law = First, we all have to recognize the laws are slightly different in each country. Part of what makes this confusing is that America tends to set the "tone" for the rest of the world (since it makes the most profitable media in the first place. Not the most media keep in mind, for example Iceland makes more books per person for example). And what makes this really confusing is that America has state and local laws, which can conflict but will still be overruled by federal law. Marijuana is a good example. Some states say YES, and the Feds say NO. So you are still committing a Fed crime if you use this stuff. However in the case of copyright, it is the other way around. Organizations say NO, and the Feds say YES! But the REAL trick here is that software that cracks DVDs is illegal, but having the resultant backup is not. How is that for confusing? Bottom line, there is a fair use act, which stands, but another law that makes getting that fair use to work for you that is illegal. I should probably blog this since I could not find a good example of this clear statement on the web. However, the best thing I could find was just the simple Wikipedia entry for the judge herself that both made the heavy blow, but also defended the other individual rights. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Illston Personally, she symbolizes to me the scariest type of person in power. Which is, she became myopic and decided to just solve the one problem in front of her, as opposed to requiring that the issues be solved correctly higher up so that this small problem could be handled. In other words, she saw a leaking toilet, and ruled that the water should be cut off to the bathroom. Then turned around and said, but everyone has a "right" to use the bathroom. It is people like this that allow tyrants to gain power. (end of rant)
Pekr: 2-Nov-2008 | Reichart - if you want to have precise skipping etc. possibility, IIRC tools like Nandub, Virtual dub allowed something like that. Those are scriptable tools. But they work with AVI, they don't allow you to RIP DVD, so you would have to use two tools.

ChristianE: 25-Jan-2010 | I see now what the problem is. Those REBOL types are hardcoded into view-request sources. But you can patch them away with remove find/only req-file/filter-list ["*.r" "*.reb" "*.rip"] remove skip find req-file/start-out/3 [fp: rty "Normal" "REBOL" "Text" "Images"] 3 After that, request-file should come up without the REBOL types.

Rebolek: 1-Dec-2009 | I fixed my StRIP packer (based on RIP but the result is enbased instead of binary data - I had a reason to do this) for R3. Packs directories and I added one refinement - /code - you can add additional code that is run after unpacking the archive. So you can use that directory just as a temp dir and then move files somewhere else or anything you want. It's basically a package manager, a very spartan one, but good enough for me. Get form next line (to prevent that extremly old and stupid AltME links bug).

Rebolek: 5-Nov-2009 | I try to keep this as short as possible. Imagine you have this file, called %test.r: ==file== REBOL[ Title: {Simple extension test} Name: ext-test Type: extension Exports: [] ] map-words: command []{ word_ids = RXI_MAP_WORDS(RXA_SERIES(frm, 1)); return RXR_TRUE; } fibc: command[ len [integer!] ]{ RXA_TYPE(frm, 1) = RXT_INTEGER; i64 o = 0; i64 l = RXA_INT64(frm, 1); i64 i; for (i = 0; i <= l; i++) o = o + i; RXA_INT64(frm, 1) = o; return RXR_VALUE; } add5: command [ a [integer!] ][ a: a + 5 return a ] ==end of file== And now imagine that in R3 console you are in the directory where you have the file %test.r . Now you type: >> compile %test.r >> import %test.dll >> fibc 10 == 55 >> add5 5 == 10 And that's all. If you want to try it, you need to have TCC (TinyC Compiler) - get it from http://download.savannah.nongnu.org/releases/tinycc/tcc-0.9.25-win32-bin.zip The script expects it instaled to %/c/tcc/ but it can be changed. Then go to r3 console and type: >> do http://box.lebeda.ws/~rebolek/rebol/srec.rip >> cd %srec/ >> do %srec.r Then you can try COMPILE etc. (see above). %test.r is included in the archive. SREC is shortcut for Simple REBOL Extension Compiler. Enjoy! (if it works ;)
Rebolek: 6-Nov-2009 | I've updated http://box.lebeda.ws/~rebolek/rebol/srec.rip. The fibonacci function can now be written as: fibr: command [ len [integer!] ][ o: 0 repeat i len [ o: o + i ] return o ] and compiled to DLL. If you prefer c-code, just use string! with c-code in command's body, instead of block! with RebC dialect.

Maxim: 10-Nov-2010 | ok, I've read the whole exceptions document and a few (very old!) tickets at least 3 times now. I'll start by being honest and saying that some of this is going a bit deep into some details and I'm pretty sure that I'm not graping all implications. The background for all the discussion hasn't "sinked in" yet, so its a bit hard to be totally conclusive about my evaluation thus far. this being said... when I arrived at 5, i.e. "Definitional return only, with an option to not redefine RETURN and EXIT", it suddently starts making sense overall. 6. seems to be redundant and maybe even harmfull if we keep THROW dynamic. This is scaled with CC#1744 "fixed" and a wider use of THROW, encouraged, since it now allows custom escape/exception modeling by non guru-level Rebolers (and by guru I mean one of 3-4 rebolers on the earth... maybe not even including Carl ;-). this means, that return does one thing, throw does another. they become two completely different things, clear and conscice in all code. the only real issue I have is that we seem to loose return in parse, but if we keep throw dynamic, then that is moot, and we can just use THROW instead. In fact, woudn't that be preferable, since its more accurate? we are pre-empting the parse return and providing our own... which is what throw should be doing ... its more consistent overall. so go ahead rip my arguments appart... it will only help me understand this completely. :-)

Maxim: 10-Mar-2011 | there might be some ideas to rip out of that compiler. my favorite low-level feature was that all types where natively the same size in ram and where all aligned to that size. in E all datatypes where 32 bits in RAM so for example, chars actually had 4 bytes which you could dump bytes into, making them ideal for many purposes which strings and numbers are commonly used instead. you coud compare chars with LONGS as though they where both integers, etc.
Kaj: 9-Nov-2011 | Apparently, PuTTY has its own BSD SSL implementation, so that's interesting. But it's not structured as a library, but entirely integrated in the other protocols, seems somewhat limited and lacking in portability. The only way to use it would be to rip out the source code and make a portable library out of it, or reimplement it in Red |
