RebGUI (alpha) and draft documentation available at http://www.dobeash.com/it/rebgui/

Only a few basic widgets defined at this stage, so don't try and
convert your VID layouts across just yet! ;)

Being an alpha, the design is still settling down so feel free to
question anything that seems wrong. If there's sufficient traffic,
feel free to start a RebGUI group.

Or just grab the source (and run %test.r) directly from http://www.dobeash.com/files/RebGUI-010.zip
Anton:
2-Mar-2005
Ashley, since you have separated the View and VID facets, does this
mean that RebGUI can work closely with VID, without the two affecting
each other ? Eg. could faces from a VID LAYOUT be moved into a RebGUI
DISPLAYed layout, et vice versa ?
Anton:
2-Mar-2005
In http://www.dobeash.com/it/rebgui/facets/for the CHANGES facet,
you can add OFFSET to the list of flags (this is how you can take
advantage of hardware scrolling, if supported).
Graham:
2-Mar-2005
So, I presumed that you prototype first in VID and then optimize
in rebgui
Ammon:
2-Mar-2005
II think that's from a minimalistic POV. If you're still learning
View then perhaps you should use VID to prototype and explore your
styles and then just move the values that you need into a style definition
for RebGUI, however, if you are a seasoned expert such would not
be necisarry...

Pekr: the SVG Demo is just a quick and dirty prototype. I'm just
going to get it to the stage where it can display simple SVG icons
(for RebGUI). If someone else wants to write an SVG viewer that is
fully SVG 1.1 (with 1.2 around the corner) compatible then good luck
... I'm *not* going to be doing that! ;)

yeksoon: see above comments. I'm tweaking the SVG Demo code on an
SVG icon by icon basis. As long as it works for the icons I use (or
intend to use) I'm happy - I don't guarantee the code will work with
anything other than the specific SVG files I have tested it on.

Cyphre: SVG is such a "flexible" standard isn't it? :) One question;
how did you map SVG "path d" commands (e.g. <path style=... d="M
10 10 C 20 20 ... z") where there is no "z" command to close the
"shape" (i.e. the AGG shape command closes by default).

shadwolf: Having our own SVG icons is a good idea as we don't have
to worry about licence / distribution issues and we can tweak the
generation to make it as AGG compatible as possible. To do that we
need to settle on *one* tool so as we generate consistent SVG code,
and we should generate SVG that uses a single unit of measure, preferably
pixels, as it's a real pain trying to handle multiple units of measure
within the same file. I'll continue this discussion in the RebGUI
group.

I think trying to arrive to the level to inkscape in our own SVG
DRAW MAKER software will take more than one year to redone it with
REBOL... So to avoid loss of time we can yet work on the engine for
rebgui feeting to InkScape SVG format then we can start working to
our own SVG DRAW MAKER made in full REBOL... One thing that afraid
me a little is the flexibility of the SVG format as it can be very
different how to support any SVG file comming from any EDITOR ? For
me SVG appears to me to be close to what we done with MakeDoc format.
Today we have many MD like format all very good but to make a Viewer
in rebol that support them all it wil be very very difficult.

It is my pleasure to announce, that Cyphre was contracted to bring
what I regard latest limiting factor for RebGUI database experience
- a grid. The grid should support following features - visible/non-visible
columns, both vertical/horizontal scrolling, keyboard support, programmable
navigation, tri-state columns sorting, possibility to put other styles
in cells. Expect it being in the middle of capabilities of RebGUI
table, and Henrik's grid. The grid should be also easily portable
to VID. The license - BSD.

Other things Cyphre will look into with regards to Rebgui is, how
to make RebGUI a bit more pretty, centralising other things or simply
allowing gradients for tabs etc. That is subject to change.

On non RebGUI front, we should have better sys-tray support under
Windows, probably via .dll ....

The time-frame is three weeks from today. Stay tuned!

Graham: If you want to reduce RebGUI's memory footprint just rename
%dictionary/American.dat ... that alone accounts for more than half
the memory footprint. ;)

Interestingly enough, adding:

	button "Clear" [clear system/locale/dict]

or

to %tour.r have lesser and differing effects (from a stats / recycle
perspective).

I'm currently developing a load-svg-icon function that will take
an SVG file name and size, and return a scaled draw block. Some questions
need addressing first though (feel free to post the GPL answers to
the licensing group):

1) Can I distribute a set of GPL SVG icons with the RebGUI zip bundle?
If so, under what terms / conditions?

2) If someone creates a RebGUI binary application (with the to be
released SDK) can they include GPLed SVG files, and if so, under
what terms / conditions?

3) Can GPLed SVG files be distributed under a different file name(s)?
(e.g. rename gnome-gtk-folder-icon3.svg to open.svg)

4) What if I want to take a set of GPLed SVG files and distribute
them as pre-converted draw-blocks (so RebGUI apps don't need to convert
icons from SVG to Draw)?

Now some design questions:

1) Should the result of the proposed load-svg-icon be a draw block
or an image?

2) Should RebGUI have a stock image cache or a stock draw-cmds cache?
(i.e. is it better to cache draw cmds or images)
shadwolf:
20-Jun-2005
4) What if I want to take a set of GPLed SVG files and distribute
them as pre-converted draw-blocks (so RebGUI apps don't need to convert
icons from SVG to Draw)? Normally the LGPL force you to keep the
original names and author reference but you can warn the author
and ask them a special permission to not repect this term... But
then you obviously have to mention it with a text like " Thank to
the authors of GTK for allowing us to exploit their SVG icon set
and allow us to repack and interger it to the rebGUI project"
Ashley:
22-Jun-2005
shadwolf: Once you've settled on the "best" SVG generation tool to
use (with feedback from folks here), then create a simple SVG icon
(a shaded "next" arrow for instance) and post a link to the file.
I'll have a look at the underlying SVG code it generates and we'll
see if it's clean enough to use easily. We can then start creating
more complex icons and improving the SVG renderer as we go. My hope
is that we will end up with a nice set of REBOL / RebGUI SVG icons
that are free of any licence / distribution issues.

pertaining to RebGui.
Ashley:

This should get you going:

display "Test" [
	a: area 100x50 "Title {}"
	do [
		rebfocus a
		system/view/caret: back system/view/caret
		show a
	]
]

The RebGUI edit-text function (and indeed the majority of the edit
context) is designed to be used from within RebGUI widgets ... it's
not "user-space" functionality. Manipulating text and / or focus
is done via the standard view mechanisms (system/view/caret, focal-face,
highlight-start & highlight-end) ... RebGUI just provides an encapsulated
front-end to these. Depending on what sort of operations need to
be performed (e.g. move the cursor to the Nth character), we can
certainly add additional user-space functions (much like rebfocus),
we just need to define what these functions are and how common their
use would be.

Good first cut. I''d standardize label / field widths with composed
words; eg.

window-size: NxN
tab-size: window-size - NxN
label-width: N
field-width: N

display "Test" compose [
	...
	label (label-width) ...
	field (field-width) ...
	...

This way you can globally experiment with different sizing layouts
without too much effort.

If you come across anything that would make writing an app even easier
(be it a RebGUI usage hint or enhancement request) then be sure to
mention it here. Thanks. ;)
Ashley:
24-Aug-2005
Pekr, the RebGUI resizing model is simple and works well. The "problems"
you are now seeing are caused by the fact that the latest build prevents
widgets being assigned negative size values (which prevents one class
of errors (sporadic crashes) but can cause anomalies when windows
are resized below a certain point). RebGUI assumes that if you allow
widgets to be resized you will *also* specify a window min-size that
can comfortably hold all widgets. The next build will include an
updated %tour.r and documentation that addresses this.
Volker:
24-Aug-2005
Could rebgui calculate a minimal size for a layout?
Ashley:
24-Aug-2005
Go here for a list of all other issues: http://www.dobeash.com/it/rebgui/issues.html
Ashley:
24-Aug-2005
Volker; difficult as min-size includes OS-specific title-bar and
borders, and RebGUI displays can be dynamically extended *after*
the window they appear in is displayed (I don't believe that min-size
can be changed / reset after the face has been viewed).
Ashley:
25-Aug-2005
But this allows you to resize a window below an invisible threshold
only to have your resize [partially] ignored when the layout jumps
back to it's minimum size. I still maintain that setting a realistic
min-size is not only subjective but the role of the GUI designer
... if RebGUI tries to infer this setting it will invariably get
it wrong ("why did it let my title field shrink to less than three
characters ... everyone knows a one-char field is useless" type of
issues).
Ashley:
26-Aug-2005
Not so much an absolute positioning problem as a by-product of RebGUI's
simplistic resizing model. Compare:

	display "" [field #WH field #WH return field #WH field #WH]

with:

	display "" [field #H field #WH return field #Y field #YW]

This limitation is by design so won't be changing any time soon (I
tend to design GUIs that conform to it naturally ... but that may
be just me ;) )

Ashley, what do you think of adding in some way of assisting with
field level validation. I was thinking of perhaps an optional dialected
block that specifies if the field is of date type, not null, character
length min/max, and for passwords, sufficiently complex. That way
when building database applications, you can specify the table constraints
at the field, and let rebgui automatically enforce that.

would use rebgui immediatelly, but is smiling and saying - those
ppl don't design db releated apps? Wow can they live without multi-column
text list or proper grid? :-)

No plans with 'get-text, unless it was to do something over and above
what face/text does (i.e. trim then show).

The alert problem is related to RebGUI's liberal use of hide-popup
to cope with drop-lists and edit-lists that need to be closed when
another one is opened. I figured at the time that having more than
one non-modal dialog open at the same time probably didn't make much
sense - although an alert from within one is a valid case [in hindsight].

Note the following user-configurable blocks under ctx-rebgui/edit:

tabbed: [area field edit-list password button]

	hilight-on-focus: [field edit-list]

	caret-on-focus: [area field edit-list password]

	action-on-enter: [field edit-list password]

But its probably a good idea to agree on the "correct" default behaviour
anyway.

I'm doing some async io, which works with View, but in Rebgui, I
get the following error when I click on my button

make object! [

    arg1: 'path

                show pf/pane/:old
            ]
            pf/data: face/data

I made some improvements in the list-view widget for rebgui ^^ Now
dynamc widget changes impact on data to be drawn (so when you change
the state of a checkbox this impacts on the stored data) I make a
generic callback funtion to allow ppl to save list data into a file
on changes. I make some estetical changes too
I hope you will apreciate it ^^

dont think so, because the table widget in rebgui is complete enough
for me in itself, but will check it out

I don't understand - how tabs are more complete than those in RebGUI
for e.g.?
Pekr:

I just don't understand, what you mean, that it is higher-level-than-VID
.... if VID, or RebGUI has such style, how is FX more higher level?
I can't see there any other level of abstraction, or am I missing
something? I don't want to argue :-) I just want to better understand,
what might FX provide us with, and what is lacking in View + VID/RebGUI
.... (I mean other things than missing styles, or styles not being
complete?)
