we had two problems with QT last year: first one, on the first speech
the audio codec was not set up correctly. this was fixed later on.
second, we had to resort using the mic on the camera (which is a
cheap camera after all...), and of course the lighting in the room
was not good at all for a camera (it was dark to allow us to see
the slides)

the wireless mic I bought for the PA system at the conference ended
up having a bad lapel mic, and testing the system revealed to me
that the earpiece was actually a better mic ( strange, but true
) but no one else knew that, so the first speech did not have the
PA working, because the Lapel mic was used instead of the earpiece.

I have been hopping for multi keyboard, mutli-mic input on one screen
for long time..

I wonder why it took so long for someone to do this. Isn't it obvious
that multiple mice would be usefull in many cases.

then you could use a combination of motion, pressure, touch points,
camera input, mic input to invoke all kinds of complex actions with
combination "hotkeys"

The mic in there can get hot.
[unknown: 9]:
10-May-2007
Sorry, no, a "hot mic" is a mic that swings with volume level...so
when there are sharp increases in sound, it clips.
[unknown: 9]:
10-May-2007
A good trick is to put foam over the mic.
[unknown: 9]:
10-May-2007
first post is one on a hot mic.
Anton:

So you still get a good effect with a new mic ? Do you think the
devcon mic is a new one or old one ?
[unknown: 9]:

New mic in France
[unknown: 9]:

So the mic is hot, and the room is hot TOO!
Anton:
10-May-2007
ok, so even a newer mic can be helped with foam in this situation.
[unknown: 9]:
10-May-2007
Yes, putting foam over the mic would help a little, but it would
also mean that it would not work as well iat a distance. What you
really want is a mic wired on the person (which has foam built in),
and no mic on the room.
Anton:
10-May-2007
A directional mic on the person.
[unknown: 9]:

It is called a Lanier Mic
Anton:
10-May-2007
R. ok, so there's not the problem of pointing the mic to the mouth
all the time.
Anton:
10-May-2007
I bought a really cheap mic recently - I think it was $3 - and the
frequency range is abysmal.
[unknown: 9]:
10-May-2007
Mics have dropped in price, just like optics for cameras...but $3
is still TOO CHEAP. Pay $50+ and you will get a good mic. I always
trust Plantronics for headsets.
Anton:
10-May-2007
the Lanier mic obviously has a tight dynamic range.
Gabriele:
11-May-2007
ok they muted the mic
Gabriele:
11-May-2007
yeah we muted the mic

Also, there must be a mic up close to the speaker---perhaps a lapel
mic. Otherwise the audio is awful. The equipment needs to be set
up a day or two before the event, and some testing done to make sure
everything is working properly. It pays to have someone with experience
do this.

Hi James,

I've got 20 rooms set up already that I use to do live online music
lessons on a daily basis. I think the existing format of those rooms
could work very well as they stand. I'll create a special room just
for Rebol Devcon. I'd like to show you what I've got, to see if
it'd work for your needs. The audio/video conference software works
on PC/Mac/Linux, in any browser that has a fairly recent version
of the flash plugin installed (I believe version 6 onward will work
- 8+ will definitely work). Aside from flash, there's no installation
required to use the system - just go to the designated web page.
It will allow anyone in the room to take turns jumping onto the
mic/camera to speak (admin can ban unwanted users), there's a text
chat, and I've got a really simple way of sharing screen shots already
installed in the existing room setup. It should take only a minute
or 2 to show presenters how it works...

I've being doing daily live online music lessons as a part of my
commercial music lesson business for the past 4.5 years, and this
system is the most stable and simple that I'm aware of. It'll work
through just about any router/firewall configuration, and it's dead
simple to use - visitors just go the url, and they'll hear and see
the speaker. If they want to be seen on camera and speak, they just
need to have a web cam and microphone installed and working. If
flash is running in the browser, it'll work immediately, no download
or installs to do.

There's a video that I send to students which explains a little about
it:

The online lesson page for my business, which has basic info about
web cams, microphones, and headphones, is here:

I'll see everyone at noon EST today at http://rockfactory.us/rooms/room20
. Please have your mic and headphones ready to go!
Gabriele:

Yes, broadcast/viewer is probably the best. But the other one with
names in the chat and ability to ask for mic was nice too.

and mic.

Graham, I've been on Hangouts with Maarten and he was audio only.
So my guess is you can ignore the message. It might work without
a mic as well as they do have a text chat, though we also have altme
for text.

No idea why Google would use *my* language when other people join...
I guess they're just silly. :)
