now, that was a news site ... blog etc... but after a 1000 days,

Two things:

= The subtle question = 


We have played with a lot of software, and ALL of them (that we have 
tried) have failed to produce a final product that works.  Meaning, 
all players (WMplayer, WinAmp, VLC, etc.) do not allow skipping, 
and, again, keep in mind, this is using Windows tools to Rip, and 
then encode (usually two products have to be used ).


I make this clear because I'm not questioning that this can be done 
correctly from Linux (or perhaps Mac even).


So my question is really "[are you sure] from windows you can produce 
a 700m avi from a DVD that allows skipping [keyframes] on Windows?"


Our search of forums tells us others have the same problem, and people 
eventually give up and go to linux.

(Warning, rant ahead) :)

= The law = 


First, we all have to recognize the laws are slightly different in 
each country.  Part of what makes this confusing is that America 
tends to set the "tone" for the rest of the world (since it makes 
the most profitable media in the first place.  Not the most media 
keep in mind, for example Iceland makes more books per person for 
example).  And what makes this really confusing is that America has 
state and local laws, which can conflict but will still be overruled 
by federal law.  Marijuana is a good example.  Some states say YES, 
and the Feds say NO.  So you are still committing a Fed crime if 
you use this stuff.


However in the case of copyright, it is the other way around.  Organizations 
say NO, and the Feds say YES!


But the REAL trick here is that software that cracks DVDs is illegal, 
but having the resultant backup is not.  How is that for confusing?


Bottom line, there is a fair use act, which stands, but another law 
that makes getting that fair use to work for you that is illegal. 
 I should probably blog this since I could not find a good example 
of this clear statement on the web. 


However, the best thing I could find was just the simple Wikipedia 
entry for the judge herself that both made the heavy blow, but also 
defended the other individual rights.

Personally, she symbolizes to me the scariest type of person in power. 
 Which is, she became myopic and decided to just solve the one problem 
in front of her, as opposed to requiring that the issues be solved 
correctly higher up so that this small problem could be handled.


In other words, she saw a leaking toilet, and ruled that the water 
should be cut off to the bathroom.  Then turned around and said, 
but everyone has a "right" to use the bathroom.

It is people like this that allow tyrants to gain power.

I want Joe the Plumber to be a home rebol.  REBOL is one step away 
from allowing normal people access.  This hit me when I was showing 
how easy REBOL was to a construction boss.  How they could be masters 
of their own domain.  They lit up like a christmas tree.  A few days 
later a $10,000.00 entry caused one of their little scripts to fail. 
 The lights went out, and instead of embracing becoming a home business 
script writer, they felt stupid, and when I tried to reexplain the 
use of tick versus comma, they just got pissed off and will never 
be budding REBOL home users. 


All of us here could handle 001101010110110110110110010101 and eventually 
get the machine to do what we want.  I'm aiming to open our favourite 
little engine so grandma could use it to write grocery lists and 
then little VID charts etc, etc.   If we keep that to ourselves, 
well, IMHO, REBOL will wallow in the usage numbers counted in hundreds 
not millions as I believe it could.


I could be wrong, but REBOL is too close to being usable by non-programmers 
to let this slip by without at least griping once every 2 months 
or so.  :)


In my little warped world, the REBOL console could be the home users 
"application framework".  Every inch closer to common text usage 
could add an untold number of people by making them feel enabled. 
 Less geek, more people.   Again, I'll admit, I could be wrong; maybe 
the art of scripting will always be for nerds.

doc, its faster to let rebol do what is does best in binary and let 
us take over on those tokens it can't recognise.  just ignoring comma 
would have allowed me use scientific data more than once directly 
 without having to dare understand parse intricacies.


remember that parse IS NOT EASY.  I didn't use it for over 6 years, 
cause everytime I dared, it just blew up in my face.  this would 
provide a simple entry point for more people to support DSL and leverage 
the rich datatype system in rebol, without the need to be a guru 
level reboler.

Jerry, if you're not aware, just a word of caution about line by 
line entry in the console; the console will attempt to mold the result. 
That means rebol will use at least the same amount of memory again 
just to create the molded string.

Question: I have a block that represents several records (fixed size 
number of fields). Now I need to extend each record by one column. 
Inserting a new entry every X entries in the block. IIRC there is 
a special function to deal with fixed size blocks for such thing. 
Like remove-each but more generic.

Your 2 million entry index, with each index value of 3 bytes, should 
theoretically take 5.7 MB. Do you really need to reduce that with 
compaction ?

again, I know most patterns CAN be described using parse, but in 
many occasions, what could have been a simple parens with a decision 
and 2 or 3 very simple rules, ended up being a complex tree of tens 
or more rules, which have non obvious interdenpendencies and things 
like left entry recursions (I hope I make sense here) which are, 
well, slow(er) and hard to map in one's mind.

While doing a google search on "Rebol AS400"  I came across this 
entry dated Nov 19th 1999: 


One of the best aspects of REBOL is that it is supported on over 
35 platforms, with support for 50 or more platforms expected by the 
end of the year. One of those platforms, fortunately, is the AS/400...With 
the strength of REBOL’s cross-platform support, REBOL scripts will 
run exactly the same way on the AS/400 as they do on any other platform, 
so you can start REBOL programming before the final release of the 
AS/400 version...

Anyone know of a bug in REBOL where the word "end" shows up in a 
list! of values?  I have got this weird problem where the word "end" 
shows up in what should be a list! block of nothing but integers 
but instead I have integers and a few references of the word "end" 
without the string as it is not a string datatype.  If I do a foreach 
and attempt to step through each item it crashes on that entry.  
I can't determine what datatype it is.  I looked at my code and nothing 
in my code or the data it handles contains the word "end".

How transient are the blocks?  REBOL seems to do a fair job of not 
over allocating.   a: copy [] a: copy [] will only change the count 
by an entry, not two.   a: copy [] insert/only a copy [] should change 
select stats/types 'block! by two or so.

Diss'ing IDE's might alienate some Smalltalk folk.  I cannot imagine 
maintaining an application suite such as I deal with everyday without 
an IDE.  I just wish it was not eclipse ...  Of course only wimps 
used a Disk Operating System and real men code in machine codes only 
... and real pro's dictated their SNOBOL punch cards to lovely assistants 
...  and ANT scripts are for sissies.  Some must have ridiculed Tcl, 
Expect and TK in their day ... but if my IDE can facilitate my efforts 
to systematically (key word there) shrirnk company''s codebase as 
it becomes more reliable with better test coverage then maybe a refactoring 
browser would be a good tool after all.  Even better if it is an 
integrated part of the IDE, as in Dolphin Smalltalk or Squeak Smalltalk 
or Smalltalk/X or Cincom Visual Smalltalk.  Not that I couldn't survive 
on grep and diff's.  But once the codebase is too large for any one 
person to author or maintain on their lonesome, a tool that remebers 
what you did last and where can be a god-send.  If you want to know 
hell without an IDE join an actuarial department working in APL. 
 There you don't even know if they have talent: you just hope most 
of it works as each quarter rolls around and try to survive year-end. 
 But you know they're smart, cuz after all, they're actuaries - and 
look at all that APL code in all those files ... of course a few 
of them look back wistfully at their student days in C with Borland's

from the REBOL documentation.

---Approach


The approach that this document uses is to use REBOL/View/VID to 
demonstrate its abilities and give a visual tutorial. To enable this 
some changes have been made to the core %easyvid.r program from Carl 
Sassenrath. A scoll bar was added to the right pane because it was 
just too difficult to constrain the examples to the screen real estate 
that was available.

---Order Order


The order of the items needs some work. The easyvid presentation 
approach today does not allow for the drilling down and expansion 
of an outline tree which is needed for a large amount of documentation.


The preferred approach is to put a multi-level tree for navigation 
purposes and then allow navigation up and down the tree.

===Introduction to VID

With REBOL/View it's easy and quick to create your own user
interfaces. The purpose of this tutorial is to teach you the
basic concepts or REBOL/View interfaces in about 20 minutes.

VID is REBOL's Visual Interface Dialect.  A dialect is an
extension of the REBOL language that makes it easier to express
or describe information, actions, or interfaces.  VID is a
dialect that provides a powerful method of describing user
interfaces.

VID is simple to learn and provides a smooth learning curve from
basic user interfaces to sophisticated distributed computing
applications.


---Creating VID Interfaces

VID interfaces are written in plain text. You can use any text
editor to create and edit your VID script. Save your script
as a text file, and run it with REBOL/View.

!Note: Using a word processor like Word or Wordpad is not
recommended because files are not normally saved as text.
If you use a word processor, be sure to save the output
file as text, not as a document (.doc) file.


Recommendation: Look at TextPad from http://www.textpad.com




===Minimal VID Example

Here is a minimal VID example.  It creates a window that
displays a short text message.  Only one line of code
is required:

    view layout [text "Hello REBOL World!"]

You can type this line at the REBOL console prompt, or save
it in a text file and run it with REBOL.  If you save it
as a file, the script will also need a REBOL header. The
header tells REBOL that the file contains a script. Here
is an example of the script file with a header:

    REBOL [Title: "Example VID Script"]

    view layout [text "VID Example!"]

You can also add buttons and other gadgets to the script. The
example below displays a text, list of files, and a button:

    view layout [
        h2 "File List:"
        text-list data read %.
        button "Great!"
    ]

!Click on the examples above to see how they will appear on your
screen.  Click on their close box to remove them.  All of the
examples that follow can be viewed this way.


===Window Management


The code that displays the examples also shows how to manage the 
number of windows that are open.


Look at the show-example block in the code near the end of this script.


The location of the example window is also managed here by keeping 
track of the co-ordinates for the sample. After the sample window 
is moved, the next use will open at the same location.



===Pre-loaded Images


For this script, the image which represented a Portable Network Graphic
definition of an image is held in the script and loaded.


For a small number of graphics, this can achieve some packaging and
performance benefits.


The image "polished" is used through the script to achieve the polished 
steel
look that is one the outer frame.

===Two Basic Functions

Two functions are used to create graphical user interfaces
in REBOL: VIEW and LAYOUT.

The LAYOUT function creates a set of graphical objects.  These
objects are called faces.  You describe faces with words and

values that are put into a block and passed to the LAYOUT function.

The VIEW function displays faces that were previously created by
LAYOUT. The example below shows how the result of
the LAYOUT function is passed to the VIEW function, and the
interface is displayed.

    view layout [
        text "Layout passes its result to View for display."
        button "Ok"
    ]

Click on the above example to view it.

!Note: the block provided to a layout is not normal REBOL code,
it is a dialect of REBOL.  Using a dialect makes it much easier
to express user interfaces.



===Styles

Styles describe faces.  The examples above use the text and
button styles to specify a text line and a button. REBOL has
40 predefined face styles. You can also create your own custom
styles.  Here are a few example styles:

The words like backdrop, banner, box, text, and button are styles.

===Facets

Facets let you modify a style.  For instance, you can change the
color, size, text, font, image, edge, background, special
effects, and many other facets of a style.

Facets follow the style name.  Here is an example that shows
how you modify the text style to be bold and navy blue:

    view layout [txt bold navy "Facets are easy to use."]

The words bold and navy are not styles.  They are facets that
modify a style. Facets can appear in any order so you don't
have to remember which goes first.  For example, the line
above could be written as:

    view layout [txt "Facets are easy to use." navy bold]

Many facets that can be specified.  Here is an example that
creates bold red text centered in a black box.

    view layout [txt 300 bold red black center "Red Text"]

You can create facets that produce special effects, such
as a gradient colored backdrop behind the text:

    view layout [
        vtext bold "Wild Thing" effect [gradient 200.0.0 0.0.200]
    ]

===Custom Styles

Custom styles are shortcuts that save time.  When you define a
custom style, the facets you need go into the new style.  This
reduces what you need to specify each time you use the style,
and it allows you to modify the look of your interface by
changing the style definitions.

For example, here is a layout that defines a style for red
buttons.  The style word defines the new style, followed by
the old style name and its facets.

    view layout [
        style red-btn button red
        text "Testing red button style:"
        red-btn "Test"
        red-btn "Red"
    ]

So, if you wanted to create a text style for big, bold,
underlined, yellow, typewriter text:

    view layout [
        style yell tt 220 bold underline yellow font-size 16

        yell "This is big old text."
        yell "Goodbye"
    ]


===Master Stylesheet 

REBOL holds its styles in a master stylesheet. When you are
sure that you want to share them without having to add the
style sheet line then do it as follows:

First add the style to the master sheet:

    button 200x50 "Define text-note as maroon bold text" [stylize/master 
    [
        text-note: txt maroon bold      
    ]]

    button 200x50 "Define text-note as white italic text" [stylize/master 
    [

Then invoke it:

===Note About Examples

!From this point forward, all examples will assume that
the view and layout functions are provided.  Only the layout
block contents will be shown.  To use these examples in your
scripts, you will need to put them in a layout block, as was
shown earlier.

For example, code that is written as:

    view layout [button red "Test it"]

will now appear as:

    button red "Test it"


===Face Sizes

The size of a face depends on its style.  Most styles, such as
buttons, toggles, boxes, checks, text-lists, and fields, have a
convenient default size.  Here are some examples.

    button "Button"
    toggle "Toggle"
    box blue
    field
    text-list

If no size is given, text will automatically compute its size,
and images will use whatever their source size is:

    text "Short text line"
    text "This is a much longer line of text than that above."
    image %palms.jpg

You can change the size of any face by providing a size facet.
The size can be an integer or a pair.  An integer specifies
the width of the face.  A pair specifies both width and height.
Images will be stretched to fit the size.

    button 200 "Big Button"
    button 200x100 "Huge Button"

    image %palms.jpg 150x50

===Color Facets

Most styles have a default color.  For example the body of
buttons will default to a teal color.  To modify the color of
a face, provide a color facet:

    button blue "Blue Button"
    h2 red "Red Heading"
    image %palms.jpg orange

Colors can also be specifed as tuples. Each tuple contains three
numbers: the red, green, and blue components of the color. Each
component can range from 0 to 255. For example:

    button 200.0.200 "Red + Blue = Magenta" 200
    image %palms.jpg 0.200.200 "Green + Blue"

Some face styles also allow more than one color.  The effect of
the color depends on the style.  For text styles the first color
will be used for the text and the second color for the background
of the text:

    txt "Yellow on red background" yellow red
    banner "White on Navy Blue" white navy

For other styles, the body of the face is the first color, and
the second color will be used as its alternate.

    button "Multicolor" olive red
    toggle "Multicolor" blue orange

---Padding


The pad keyword creates extra padding between styles. It uses a pair 
or integer value. When it is an integer, spacing is created either 
horizontally (across) or vertically (below). When it is a pair, the 
spacing will be created both horizontal and vertically. The following 
example illustrates both uses. First, the buttons "one" and "two" 
are padded with an integer representing 40 pixels in one direction. 
Then the buttons "three" and "four" are padded with a pair representing 
40x40 pixels. 

    across

Most styles have a default color.  For example the body of
buttons will default to a teal color.  To modify the color of
a face, provide a color facet:

Colors can also be specifed as tuples. Each tuple contains three
numbers: the red, green, and blue components of the color. Each
component can range from 0 to 255. For example:

Some face styles also allow more than one color.  The effect of the 
color depends on the style.  For text styles the first color will 
be used for the text and the second color for the background of the

For other styles, the body of the face is the first color, and the 
second color will be used as its alternate.

 However, keep in mind that the computations are performed in real 
time.  If complex combinations are required, a temporary image should 
be created with the to-image function.

An action can be associated with almost any face. To do so, follow 
the face style with a block:

The block is used as the body of a function that is passed the face

such as shown  below, they might give you some usability concerns.

A list is an iterated sub layout and takes a layout block that uses 
the Visual Interface Dialect. The styles in the layout will be repeated 
until there is no more room to fit them within the list dimensions.


---Why


A face can be iterated to create a number of virtual faces. For instance, 
when displaying a list of ten buttons, each of the buttons does not 
need to be created as a separate object. If the buttons only differ 
by a few facets (such as position, text, and action taken on selection), 
a model face can be created and iterated for its other position. 
This is useful when creating scrolling lists of files and other data 
sets that share the same appearance.

The style's default look can be overriden easily with one line of 
code.

===Diagram Example


Carl has created some diagrams in REBOL using styles to make an architecture 
diagram.

This is a slightly modified version.


Here again a DO block precedes the layout code for non-layout initiatiation 
... here the definition of a function.

Why make a diagram this way?


1. One reason is that it can be interactive ... the sections are 
all "hot" with a few lines of code.  Here they pop up REBOL Dialogs 
but they could do anything that can be coded even something as simple 
as launching a browser on a different URL for each diagram component. 
 The "Compositor" box demonstrates this by launching your browser 
on the REBOL.com site.


2. Very small footprint size compared to other presentation source 
formats.

The function for emailing has appeared in Jan-2004 on the rebol list.


It is a simple idea ... to create a standard emailer by invoking

No, R2 doesn't use registers. The context assigned to the function 
is reused, with the value block switched out on recursion. The original 
(non-recursive) value block is left alone when the function returns, 
and set to nones on function entry. This is where the memory leaks 
come from: unintentionally persistent references to local variables. 
R2 actually does have a stack (it's a block), but it is used differently.


R3 just has a second context type that does stack-indirect word dereferencing. 
When the function starts a block of values is pushed on the task-local 
stack and the references to those values do an additional indirection 
to get the stack frame before getting the values - this is why function! 
word dereferencing is 28% slower than object! or closure! word dereferencing.


R2 has two context types: object! and system/words (an expandable 
object!). R3 also has two context types: it doesn't have R2-style 
object! contexts - all are expandable like system/words - but it 
does add the stack-indirect type.

- currently when you install, it seems to work correctly, untill 
you choose to uninstall. You typically go to control-panel/install-uninstall 
icon, you find Rebol and choose to unistall. That is great, but that 
entry seems to be shared between the accounts. So - I tried installing 
for two accounts and IIRC the entry vanished and in fact second user 
could object, that he can't regurally uninstall Rebol

- currently View contain rather nasty bug, which does NOT allow it 
to be run without the installation at all. Try to uninstall Rebol 
and then try running it rebol.exe -i your-sript.r, it will try to 
launch desktop and what is more it will try to connect to internet 
and if you are behind proxy, god save you, because Rebol blocks and 
you can't shut it down even using ctrl alt del combination, and that 
is REALLY ANNOYING and knowing myself, if I would be newcomer and 
would like to try Rebol, it would go into trash just because of that 
...

The standard list has a few problems, notably in that you are forced 
to update the entire listview, when you want to refresh a single 
entry. That makes it slow for mouseovers.


The old code was much faster at scrolling and doing mouse overs as 
I could have full control over which part of the list I wanted to 
show, but everything was done manually, but it was not direct pane 
programming.

Currently about half done and quite usable at this time: It's resizable. 
Values are stored as blocks of blocks. All columns can be sorted. 
Input columns can be filtered so you can show only some columns. 
Columns can be freely reordered (but not in the GUI yet). One arbitrary 
column can be resized.

It has the normal range of series manipulation functions available 
in REBOL. There is also possibility for inline editing, by doubleclicking 
a line. Changed values are automatically stored in the list. All 
such operations are "bundled" in the list view VID code and you only 
need to provide whatever functions needed to store the list data 
in an external place. If a text entry is too wide, it'll be neatly 
cut with ellipsis (...).

Filtering function, to filter input by rows. Also has a scroll-to-selected-line 
function.

It's about as fast as the current LIST in VID, since it really is 
LIST with just a whole bunch of extra functions to make general list 
views easy. There are functions possible for clicking and double 
clicking and functions for retrieving rows and columns.


Current limitations: No mouse over indication (can't make it fast 
enough). Only one resizable column. No keyboard navigation. No horizontal 
scrolling. No scroll-wheel support. It doesn't integrate 100% with 
VID yet. I'm using some of my own widgets and bitmap graphics from 
a pretty big GUI library. Stripe look, font and coloring is locked. 
No standard settings yet for the list view.

All code is about 250 lines.


Planning: Reordering columns via drag'n'drop. Column resizing, if 
I can figure it out. Format the font object conditionally from list 
input (make this line bold if the age column is > 45 years, etc.). 
Grid drawing. Images in list rows. And if I can get around to it: 
Single cell in-line editing ala spreadsheets. :-)

If I click on a list entry, it's like all other entries are removed 
from the list. Wherever I click I always get the same entry, if I 
move the mouse over the list, all other lines are emptied when the 
mouse moves over them.

On Viewtop, I agree.  Let's develop a good method for that, and put 
it in the
next release.


There are a few choices.  1) Shorter timeout, 2) popup request to 
connect,

3) connect on demand (after clicking on an icon that has no file).

Gabriele, I see your point: The user might want to enter some data 
in a field, but part way through think of something else and leave 
the field to attend to it, then return to the original field to complete 
the data entry. Finally the enter key will do the face action which 
can validate the field.

I have a similar problem re: scrolling, and I've tried the suggstions 
by amacleod without success, here I've copied a modified version 
of cookbook-scroller in the hope someone can suggest a solution.Hi,

Creating the form is easy, but I cannot work out how to scroll the 
whole form 'up/down'

In the attached (modified cookbook-scroller.r) program I've added

problem. My need is for rapid data entry and using the mouse is really 
not a option, The program accepts user data, user TABS to navigate 
to next field, form slides as necessary, upon last field, data is 
saved, form cleared, cursor placed at first field, data entry continues.

Thanks for your input.


 I removed the Month list type and replaced with  fields. Tab does 
 visit each one in turn, and accepts data enty even tho their not 
 visible. ( until you slide)

As for the  'offset' info you mention, thats probably the key to

I'm not trying to avoid mouse use , I just want to program the data 
entry flow for user comfort, 
the user should still be able  to use the mouse as needed.


I think REBOL is a very interesting product but it does seem to have 
many 'holes' in fundemental GUI handling :-),

on the one hand it offers the very easy to make GUI interface tool, 
then stuffs up drop-down-lists, sliders, TAB control,
etc.

I'm working with resizing fields.  Setting the size of the field 
would be a good start. Figuring how to size the text-list on a window 
resize event would be a bonus.
I took a sample from the docs and modifed slightly.

yep.. but patent reviewers actually do not really research these 
things for more than one hour... so unless someone challenges it, 
and the claims are different than other alternate  character entry 
solutions, then they probably have an almost certainty in getting 
it.  it will be very easy to defend also, because its SO simple and 
doesn't rely on math algorythm just a dirt simple idea which I have 
never seen before.


this being said, its possible that the idea itself isn't new within 
this research field, but I've never seen this in a commercial form 
before.

That's about as fundamental you can get. Now, a more complex layout 
consists of many faces and this works by grouping them in a tree 
of objects.


In the FACE object, there is an entry called PARENT-FACE, which is 
how faces are grouped together in a tree. PARENT-FACE can be another 
face object or a block of face objects.


This is fundamentally how a typical View layout works, and you can 
build a layout like this by hand, by creating each face, setting 
position and size, color, text, etc. for each face, and put them 
together in a tree and display them with View.

There is no such way. Some scripts work for many versions of REBOL, 
some don't. A way to tell is to use the NEEDS entry in the headers.

Thinking about this, it's only natural for any output console window 
to close after script execution.  For running the demos via viewtop 
though, it would be nice to either have the script wait at the end, 
ask for user entry, or maybe have a permanent viewtop console window.

Hi! Quick question about parsing REBOL code itself... I'm putting 
together an entry for a contest which is line-constrained (no more 
than 250 SLOC), so I want to crush my code down as much as possible 
while still having something that actually looks like code (I know 
about using the compression, but I want something that looks like 
a program).


I'm starting with Carl's REBOL parser from the cookbook, but it seems 
to skip the colons for initializers ("x: x + 1" -> [x x + 1]). Here's 
my current hack of his parser:

Idea: I'm using a lot of data-entry forms in my apps. So getting 
a data-record from the form and putting a data-record into the form 
is a common task. It would be great to have a function SAVE-FORM 
and LOAD-FORM, that collects/restores all necessary widget values.


We could specify a SAVE flag via the options facet for each widget? 
If the SAVE flag is set the widget is collected/restored.

If the mouse is a waste of time for your users, then they don't need 
a GUI. Just deliver data entry functionality via a console type application. 
My users [medical] make extensive use of TabletPCs so no mouse / 
pen is a bit of a deal-breaker for me. ;)

REBOL fixes permit; but it's not high on my list of priorities.

The first step to getting the collaborative documentation up is to 
migrate the widget specific documentation across; and this gives 
us the opportunity to reformat and expand upon the content. But what 
template to use? If you have an opinion on this then cruise along

this single entry (area). Once we are happy with the format I'll

In the works. I've already restructured the source by removing each 
widget (from %rebgui-widgets.r) to its own <widget>.r file under 
a new %widgets/ directory. Next step is to create a link to each 
source file under its matching WidgetsList Wiki entry.


I've also created a monolithic script (striped output from prebol.r) 
which resides at: http://www.dobeash.com/RebGUI/rebgui.zip


The intention at this stage is to have multiple source files that 
can be collaboratively worked on, with a "build" every so often to 
merge them into a single script for easy access / deployment (not 
everyone will want to grab the source from SVN). The fact that each 
widget resides in its own source file now makes it very easy to "plugin" 
additional widgets.

	people/redraw

and there was a row selected before, than the internal state is still 
in "row selected" but the new row isn't highlighted. Here internal 
state and GUI don't match.

When there is text in a field and we do the focus on it, then the 
text is shaded black.  Is there a command where, instead of shaded 
region, the focus is simply the insertion point placed before the 
string in the field.  The shaded region presumes that we will replace 
it all with a new value.  An insertion point suggest that we will 
correct the entry.  The difference is that we do not have to systematically 
hit a left arrow key first, to correct the field.

I spent a lot of time working on that kind of thing for VB, and also 
used some commercial VBX/OCX packages that included them. Our target 
audience was data entry operators in call centers and, while this 
is what the internal analysts and user contacts said was what they 
wanted, the actual users hated it; it just got in their way. Asking 
around informally, I found that most users didn't care for them, 
while techies thought it was a great idea.

When I started writing applications that requiered data entry, I 
always first wrote an object that takes text as input (something 
like this: "'Name' c20 'Address' c30 'Town' c30) and displays modal 
dialog with those fields, OK and Cancel buttons, and all the logic 
that is needed...

So all my data entry dialogs looked and worked the same and all that 
usually fit in one screen of code....

The tough thing to appreciate is that VID is a general-purpose entry/mid-level 
dialect.  R2/VID has been in the wild for 6yrs(?) now and we have 
certainly gone through periods of isolating key weaknesses, but we 
all have a tendency to have had starry-eyed visions for what VID 
should be.  The practical gets mixed in with the possibility when 
it's time for action.


I think the community would be better served with a strong VID alternative 
(not as a slight to RebGUI which does very well acheiving its stated 
aims) not bound by Carl's constraints for the entry level language, 
and open (as in open) source with very clear aims.  It has to be 
independent and perhaps needs to span R2 and R3, at least initially. 
 We have the capabilities, resources and talent to do it, but instead 
try to hammer these ideas into VID.


This isn't intended to be a rallying cry -- it's just my assessment 
based on observation and involvement.  Such an undertaking would 
have inevitable difficulty overcoming the differing visions of interested 
parties.  Conversely, it's within us to create an enduring, enviable 
framework...

My goal with QM is to deliver a high-level entry point for developing 
web applications (and a fledgling sister project in app development) 
that gets you started quickly, reduces the quirk quotient, structures 
the environment, and is above all expressive.  I see this as the 
hook.  Depth comes with initial success...

Having a play with REBOL3, and after modifying the sliding cat example 
to display data entry areas

instead in the scroll-panel,  I find that I cannot move to the 'next' 
field either by using TAB or CR 

What the 'secret' keystroke required ???

From re-reading the Docbase page, it seems that both panels and groups 
may be visible as they have styles:


Panels are implemented with the panel and group styles. You will 
use these two styles together to create a wide range of layouts.


I don't think that I'll try to clarify the DocBase entry just yet 
though.
