Word is that the current Syllable on the current VMware runs pretty
fast, so you'll get a more accurate impressions than with other emulators
like QEme. I just hope the download site is not swamped, because
this news is currently also featured on OSNews
Kaj:
31-Dec-2005
The closest route to doing this would be to recreate the old manual
way of installation. Copy the base zip package to a FAT partition.
Download the last boot floppies that were available for old Syllable
versions. Follow the old manual installation procedure

5 Core developers, maybe 50 that have contributed at some time, 500
on the mailing list, more than 1000 on the forum, 5000 who download
each install CD, more than 10,000 who download each live CD and emulator
image, tens of thousands who come visit when we're on OSNews, roughly
an order of magnitude more when we're on Slashdot

Graham:

Wouldn't it be simpler to just provide the file in a format that
most systems understand without having download another piece of
software just for this purpose .. which then ruins the advantage
of using an obscure compression system because you save a few bytes?
Kaj:
21-Oct-2007
With the download being a few MB, you save download costs right with
our first large package. Especially on dial-up, which is also a large
part of the world. And of course, the next time you already have
it installed
Graham:

for the one that is easiest for me.

Windows doesn't include much in general. From ME and XP on it has
Zip, but that's it. Distributing large and popular downloads zipped
is really not an option. Unless you want to sponsor our download
costs
Kaj:
22-Oct-2007
They are offered as torrents. But it saves only maybe a quarter of
the costs, because more than half the people download the regular
files - and that only if the audience is good

The third release of Syllable Server has been published. This is
an important release, because it is the first one that focused on
making the system actually usable as a server. A number of popular
servers were added and configured, and also several innovative REBOL
software stacks. Out of the imaginary box, Syllable Server is now
ready for such things as accepting remote SSH log-ins over the network,
running a web server on the Cheyenne REBOL server, running an FTP
server and several more. Special attention has been paid to programmability,
with support for developing Model-View-Controller web applications
in QuarterMaster and networking applications with the REBOL/Services
Service Oriented Architecture. The Genode Nitpicker windowing system
is also included. Read the rest in the full changelog. An extensive
manual was also written, which is easy to follow. As usual, both
a BitTorrent download (preferred) and a regular download are available
(80 MB 7-Zip archive). Please use the torrent if you can.

I've tried REBOL with 3 Linux distributions now (Arch Linux, Puppy
Linux, Ubuntu) and the Fedora version of REBOL is always the one
that works best. Is there even a Linux distribution that works with
the Libc6 version? Maybe it would be a good idea to mention on the
download site "You probably want to download the Fedora version"
to make this easier for new users and maybe also rename the Fedora
download since it doesn't work for just Fedora.
Gabriele:

the live cd is missing stuff (in order to make it fit), it also is
doing everything in memory (including the things you download and
try to install), and afaik the "ram disk" is fixed size (so it may
not be big enough to hold what you're trying to install).

1 difference: using RT's download, the REBOL console only works
when REBOL is started from the Ubuntu command line (i.e., not when
it's started by clicking an icon in file manager). New users may
think that scripts are broken because GUIs w ork fine, no matter
how REBOL is started.

so we could download them into draw tools using rebservices
Sunanda:
7-Mar-2007
90+% of what you need to do that, Steeve, is already in the Library:

[1] we could (in minutes) add extra valid domains or types so a script
could be categorised as draw-snippet

[2] the LIbrary doesn't use rebservices for an API. It has an API
called LDS that predates rebservices (basically, the library team
got there first). You can use it to download any script (among other
things too)

http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/documentation.r?script=lds-local.r#toc-50

[3] using LS to download a snippet every time it is needed would
be slow and wasteful.....But you could easily write get-draw-snippet
that caches results locally.
****

That would not be perfect as it would be good to have a page/pages
showing the images the snippets produce. But if there were enough
snippets, we could add that.....And, before we do someone else could
beat us to it on their own website -- they could use LDS to get all
the snippets and display the images. It'd be a neat bit of Community
interaction.

====> Perhaps switch to Library for any detailed discussion.

Apollo 1.4.1 released: http://home.tiscali.dk/john.niclasen/apollo.zip

Fixed a problem with the buttons for missions with a lot of pictures.
Unpack the zip and start apollo.r. The indexes for Apollo 7-17 missions
doing the years 1968-1972 will be created. The script loadthumbs.r
can be used to download all thumbnail pictures, so the apollo.r script
will run faster. Run loadthumbs.r after the indexes have been created
by apollo.r. (Thumbs are around 30MB!)

Anyway, about the App...

It's a study tool for the FDNY Promotional Exams. It incorporates
all the FDNY Manuals into a special format (Similar to Make-doc)
and allows you to hi-lite, "attach" notes, search the entire catalogue,
bookmark your place, track "buzz words" Future versions will incorporate
thousands of test questions all of which are linked to the material
by book, chapter, and section, and also the ability to add tour own
questions. Curriculums will be added to guide study of only pertinent
materials for and test and the ability to form your own curriculums.

Updates to the program and the study material is automatic as well
as synchronization of a users hi-lites, notes etc. ( this allows
for a user to use from multiple locations, home/work etc., and also
serves as a back-up method for what could be months of work for the
user.

Many more plans...

If you are interested, my site is still alpha and looks like crap
but it has some screen shots and a video of the program in action.
I'm using Cheyenne (Thanks Doc) and there is a cute (but ugly) RSP
page that handles my FAQs page... http://firecaptainnyc.com

If you are really interested, feel free to contact me and I can give
you the link to download it....

There is a guest mode and demo mode built in...

I welcome any feedback!

HOW-TO make Cheyenne work with PHP for non-Windows OS

The purpose of the following patch is to make FastCGI in PHP work
the same on all OSes.

1) If you have PHP v5.2.1 or higher with sources, you can skip 2)
& 3) else :

2) Download latest PHP sources from http://www.php.net/downloads.php
3) Untar the archive anywhere yo want
4) Go to PHP install folder
5) Patching PHP source :

Open a REBOL console, then :

;---- cut'n paste the following code in REBOL's console ----

patch-php: has [buffer pos][
	target: %sapi/cgi/fastcgi.c
if none? attempt [buffer: read target][
print "unable to find the file to patch!!"
		exit
	]
	either parse buffer [
		thru "int fcgi_accept_request("
		to "if (req->fd >= 0) {"
		pos: to end
	][
		insert pos "^/^-^-^-^-break;^/^-^-^-^-"
		write target buffer
		print "patch applied."
	][
print "failed to locate the line to patch!!"
	]
]

patch-php
;---- end of code ----

6) Once the patch is applied :

	> ./configure --enable-fastcgi
	> make
	> sudo make install

7) Check if everything is ok :

	> php-cgi -h
	...
you should see a -b option listed meaning you got proper
	FastCGI support.

If it fails (occured on OSX), try with a full path instead :

	> /usr/local/bin/php-cgi -h

8) Edit Cheyenne's config file (httpd.cfg) to set the correct option
in the PHP section. Non-Windows users have to also set the new 'delay
option.

If you can access to the server through rconsole just do this : write
%debug.log mold uniserve (and put the compressed version of the %debug.log
file on your web site so I can download it).

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but "Accept-Ranges: bytes" is not implemented.
Can this be done ?

I've just tried to resume a file from Henrik's server, and noticed
that it has "Accept-Ranges: none". I know this means the web server
is advertising "you can't resume!" My download client can use this
information to avoid trying to resume, but it would be even better
if the server allowed me to resume too :-)

Sure, more tester would be nice, you'll find the last driver beta
download URL in the MySQL AltME channel.

2. How to register the PDF on my Cheyenne web site

3. How the new registered PDF can be prefilled on download, completed,

The download manager I used to download the videos, which is very
good at managing the downloads after the download is done.
