don't get me wrong, I like that FF is conscious about screen real
estate.... its just that opening a window with no buttons, is a bit
drastic. I hate pulldown menus because they are extremely slow.
Maxim:

bah, I've learnt so many keyboard shortcuts in my life (with a past
in vfx and innumerable 3d & fx softwares ;-) that my memory for such
things is pretty full.
AdrianS:

yeah, I know what you mean, but a browser is such a constantly used
tool that a few shortcuts are worth memorizing, IMO

I have a question regarding fonts on web-sites: Take a look at this
one here: http://www.binaryage.com/

It uses a font called PLAY which I like a lot. This font wasn't installed
on my system, but the web-site displayed it. It's even not one of
the standard web fonts I know. Why does this work?
Kaj:

The Googel Webfonts home page drives my Firefox 3.5 into a crash
loop

im wondering what is the best way of providing permalinks for mechanical
parts, like pipe fittings.
i'd like to provide a catalog of them for a couple of companies.

each company has their own part number system which unambigously
identifies a product. i would expose a description page about these
as:
/company/part-number
onetom:
3-Jun-2011
it would however look cryptic and wouldn't empasize what is that
page about, so we were thinking about attaching a slug to it, to
help human usage and search engines too.
onetom:
3-Jun-2011
Q1: im not very sure about how much more effective from a SEO point
of view to have a slug in the URL as opposed to keywords in meta
tags and the same description as in the title of the page for example.
Kaj:
3-Jun-2011
A structured description in a title tag would be OK, but it seems
that URLs help extra
Kaj:

I use a unique identifier such as a date, followed by a textual description
in the rest of the URL
onetom:
3-Jun-2011
it's not a news site, so there might be issues with the unqueness
of the slug and other things like, i might need to display the nominal
size of the part which is a fraction in many cases, lile 1-1/4" which
wouldnt read nice at all if i have to replace the slash. the dbl
quote might be okay to omit though
Kaj:
3-Jun-2011
Yes, readability is a problem, so URLs are often more optimised for
search engines than for human readers

do u specify the slug manually or let some automatism hint u with

Not sure what to do about the 'old protocol'. Is there a way to change
it? I'm using 2.6.2.4.2
Tim:
9-Oct-2011
:) Yes. Did I tell you that I'm a python programmer too? That python
accepts single quotes? That I put in 'password' instead of "password".
@#$%! So it got a symbol instead of a string?
Tim:

Just got the message back, yours too. So, I owe you a beer. Come
on by and collect.

As usually, problem is with IE compatibility. And in my case also
need for extended chars. The best would be a tool where one could
create or modify own fonts. http://openfontlibrary.org/fonts
GrahamC:

I think you can just do that using post with a Content-type: multipart/form-data
and send the boundary, and post size

I see some squares moving arround. Are you a square?
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
anyone can suggest a good codec that works across different versions
of QT and VLC?
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
I see a stream, working perfectly here in QT 7 on windows
Volker:
6-Aug-2005
sound of a car
Gabriele:

just a sec
Volker:

and a vlc permanently disconnecting and the upper queter workjs,
rest green
DideC:
6-Aug-2005
There is a truck outside!
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
someone making a lot of noise outside...
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
and, do we have a mac that is fast enough?
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
users connect to a server that does relay. maybe we can have surfnet
doing relay for us, otherwise we have my server in texas (the one
you're seeing now)
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
lower framerate, but the picture looks a bit clearer sometimes. there
is less stability in the image though
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
i think the result would be much better with a server here in europe.
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
it probably goes through many nodes... sometimes you get a good connection,
other times bad.
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
I heard a car horn honking 10 seconds ago. what's the delay?
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
it's very annoying that it takes so long to get a keyframe
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
i could try to make it send a keyframe every second, but that would
use a lot more bw.
Volker:
6-Aug-2005
WHat is with vlc and 264? I know nothing about codecs, just googled
a bit and found this: http://developers.videolan.org/x264.html
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
ok, I got a keyframe very quickly, but the video pauses almost instantly
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
vlc can handle the stream fine for a period, but then dies
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
didec: cpu shouldn't be a problem. even with h.264 it never eats
more than 50% here on my 1.25 Ghz mini
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
also, anyone ever tryed apple's avchat? could it be used in a situation
like this?
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
ichat eats a lot of cpu
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
realvideo is too much proprietary for my taste. ;) but... i'll have
a look at it too maybe.
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
doesn't that require a windows server though?
Henrik:
6-Aug-2005
vlc can also stream video, but I don't know if it can grab from a
webcam
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
me too, but only for mpeg transport, and from a dvd source.
Gabriele:
6-Aug-2005
from a DV (firewire camera) source the only thing working out of
the box is QT on MacOS

How about a live stream when the DevCon is running? Others can Enjoy
realtime.. Perhpas even interact ?
Izkata:
7-Aug-2005
Well, I saw "live stream", and that demo can be hard to find, so
I took a wild guess ^_-
Gabriele:
8-Aug-2005
I will have Skype and Altme running for people to interact. I will
have a live video stream, but the priority is for good recordings.
JaimeVargas:
8-Aug-2005
Nope. I am getting a network error right after the buffer seems to
be filled.
JaimeVargas:
8-Aug-2005
Now I got a 404 error.
Gabriele:
8-Aug-2005
not a great day today, but there's some sun now :)
JaimeVargas:
8-Aug-2005
Or is it a Band?
JaimeVargas:
8-Aug-2005
Humm. That should be enough. Maybe a network error? Are you using
tcp from broadcaste to relay?
Gabriele:
8-Aug-2005
we can do a test with you connecting directly to my mini
JaimeVargas:
8-Aug-2005
Ok. At least lets try with a bigger window. See how it behaves.
Gabriele:
8-Aug-2005
ok... so i actually think the way to make it work fine is to have
a relay here in europe with a lot of bw
Gabriele:
8-Aug-2005
but if we have to switch to a lesser codec, like 263, for compatibility,
it gets higher
Henrik:
8-Aug-2005
looks good today, a couple of dropouts through, but it picks up quickly
again both with audio and video
Gabriele:
8-Aug-2005
without packet loss (i.e. on my lan) quality is very good. if you
see it ok there then i assume we can go this way, maybe with a relay
from surfnet.
Gabriele:
8-Aug-2005
turning the stream off, unless there's someone else wanting to give
it a try...
Ladislav:
21-Aug-2005
is there a problem with the conference pages?
Gabriele:
1-Sep-2005
UDP transport, so that could be a problem.
Gabriele:
1-Sep-2005
this is strange, it works here on the pc but i get a timeout on the
mac.
Gabriele:
1-Sep-2005
let me try making a link...
Gabriele:
2-Sep-2005
yep - page is not linked anywhere yet and is just for testing purposes.
i guess we'll have a lot to add when we go "public". (also, i'd make
it public just when the stream starts. so that there is no confusion.
earlier, just a message on the site that says "on sept. 30 a live
stream will be available through this site")
Gabriele:
2-Sep-2005
on windows with firefox and QT 7, qt gets the stream from a TCP connection
to motoko.rebol.it:554

I just booked my flight to Milan. Here is my arrival data:
29-09-2005 18:25 in Milan, Malpensa [MXP] TERMINAL 1

I have rented a car as well. So if someone is arriving around the
same time let me know and we can drive together.
Gabriele:

I'm going to buy the train tickets in advance (because we need a
reservation and it's better to do that sooner than later). You can
pay me when we meet in Rome.

So, in general how good is Europe about open WiFI?

In America, I think Starbucks offers free internet access (wireless),
or perhaps you need to keep buying coffee...I don't drink coffe so
I have never confirmed this.

In general I find that if I drive by any office compkexe I can get
an open signal though. Even in Maui, I went to the industrial area,
and there was a perfect connection while I ate at a little food place
in an odd industrial park.
Gabriele:
12-Sep-2005
i got a discount, so in the end it's going to be € 45 per person.
Gabriele:
12-Sep-2005
i think i'll send all of you a reminder email with the tickets you
requested, total money due and so on.
Robert:
12-Sep-2005
Reichart, open WiFi is not that often available. You need a provider
to access WiFi. There are a lot of HotSpots but not for free.
Sunanda:
12-Sep-2005
Yep. Most hotspots certainly in the UK cost money, often quite a
lot. That includes Starbucks.

On the other hand, there are a lot of unprotected networks....Not
that I'd want to enter a password while using one.
BrianW:
12-Sep-2005
Starbucks WiFi costs in the US, too. I am lucky that Seattle has
a lot of small local coffeeshops with free WiFi. In one right now,
actually :-)
[unknown: 9]:
13-Sep-2005
Yeah, there is a big movement to make WiFI free in america, I would
have to agree, it is worth it. Like being able to call 911 for free
from a payphone. Perhaps the max throughput would have a threshold.

Anyway, Europe, well, I guess I will be always seeking an office
where I can plug in.

Steve will not be able to join us and his speech will be replaced
by a presentation of Canvas RPaint by Geomol.
Gabriele:

so unless they show up as a surprise... they are not coming.
Gabriele:
14-Sep-2005
try rtsp://217.133.2.35/teststream.sdp - though not sure i have enough
bw for both relay and a connection

we plan a visit to the ethernal city, Rome .. is this like a wired
city ?
DideC:
14-Sep-2005
For info Dockimbel can't come as he will be in London for a marriage.
He is sad but can't do otherwise.
Gabriele:

James: yes, the site is completely build with makedoc. a version
with some modifications, sure, but still makedoc. (Chris' CMS with
some changes by me.)
Gabriele:
15-Sep-2005
i'm going to send out some emails to define some details, finally
we have a list of options for the banquet so that you can chose your
preferred meal.
Gabriele:
15-Sep-2005
also, i'd like everyone (except those that will be in rome, since
we're arriving together) to tell me when and where they arrive, and
if they already have a plan to reach the hotel or treviglio. this
way i can make sure everyone knows where to go, and noone gets lost.

Traveling is hard on me. I'm tall so seats are uncomfortable. Plus
we were in the middle of the plane, both to Germany and Greece. 18
hours…

Being back in Germany is always a little hard on me as well (has
to do with my childhood, lots of flashbacks).

The airport has these annoying "stations" just out in the hallway
for people to smoke. It is a disgusting smell. I truly don't care
that people smoke, I just hate smelling it or getting it on me.

Taxis in Greece was worse than taxis in Boston. I think our driver
thought he was riding a motorcycle. I just closed my eyes and picked
a Greek god to pray to. I chose ana…anna…what is her last name,
or yeah, Anorexia.

Reichart, if you're on vacation, you're supposed to have a good time!
I'm sorry to hear, you're having these problems.

I'm sure a good old Guru Meditation will take you to a much better
mood.
All the best! :-)
[unknown: 9]:
16-Sep-2005
G, I don't consider these problems really. And I don't consider travel
to be vacation. Traveling is about...well...traveling. I enjoy
it, but to relax I prefer to be home. My house is like a Bahamian
resort, people ask to stay at my house when I'm gone because it
is like a nice hotel.

anyone willing to create one or more themes for use with show.r that
we could use for the devcon? i'd like to have a consistent theme
(maybe inspired by the web site?) for all presentations (of course
with variations, maybe in color or something like that, so each author
can choose the preferred variation), and i also need a nice skin
for a little reblet that will be included in show.r (i made one,
but i'm no good at these things...)
Chris:
17-Sep-2005
What would be the best way to produce them? I've changed background
images before, but not really created a theme...
Henrik:
17-Sep-2005
I wanna have a go at it too. I'll try some simple stuff with a LAYOUT.
