If I get some time I might do that. One thing that confuses me is
the top portion on the left it has the logon, control panel etc..
but at the bottom left it has a place to login. Seems some of that
might be redundant and might be better to also consolidate the options
in one place on the left.

Yes, I was hoping a yound webdesigner (kid) was available to give
some suggestions. He is really outstanding at webdesign. Hoping
to get some input from him as I seen him transform some website will
some good insight.

the links on the left are not categorize in a way that the mind can
understand...

you have the 'sections' like Home, About, Contact Us etc... and later
you have FAQ, New to Rebol etc

my opinion is to get the high level categories defined first and
that will be the main entry point a user will access various content

I prefer having the search boxes there. I would expect that most
ppl that visit rebol.org have a good idea of what they are looking
for and can generally get to it the quickest via a search.

How about we have a no-cache directive to stop ISPs caching the scripts
for the download page - so we are sure to get the latest one?

Just trimmed about 100 people from the Library membership list....
http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/cpt-view-users.r

A lot of them were drive-by signups by spammers to get their URL
a link ("Hi I'm Mandy, click my link for photos") And most of *those*
must have an IQ hovering aound their waist size because they'd failed
to click the profile option to make their URL visible to other Library
members.

So the membership list (claiming 200+ members) is more relevant than
it was before.

But the automated expiry script may have caught some genuine members.
If your userid has gone and you want it back, please drop me a private
message.
Graham:

And note that if you extract the code from a running rebol, you won't
get the license. I got the above from the new SDK.
So, that message needs to be included with your script.
Ingo:

Well, IIRC the desktop code had once been released by Carl in the
hope to get derived versions. So, publishing it _should_ be OK, I
guess ;-)

But then, as I didn't used the published source (and don't find it
at the moment), I'm not sure which license would be right.

Thanks -- looks like there is a problem with the content-length header
(I thought there might be as I remember problems in testing when
trying to get a value that all browsers were happy with. I think
I've made IE happy while bemusing Firefox).

I've re-uploaded the script. It now doesn't set a content-length
header. So, if you try again, it should work. But you may not get
a download progress bar (because your browser isn't told the length
in advance)

My apologies for the problem!

I tried doing a search for "probe system" in the mailing list because
I know it is a topic that has come up a number of times and has been
discussed. After spending 30 minutes searching for relevant conversations
but came up with essentially nothing even though I tried alternate
search engines such as Google. I'd like the ability to specifically
search for code snippets. I tried different methods of entering
the search value but in every case I ended up with {Searched for:
["probe" "system"]} That's not what I want. I want "probe system"
How do I get it?
Ammon:
10-Dec-2005
Sunanda, "probe system" site:www.rebol.org inurl:thread did not return
what I was hoping for. By dropping the inurl: then I was able to
come up with one relevant thread and the rest of the results were
talking about probing in the system object like system/script/args.
I can't seem to get rid of the /whatever after system with Google.
I was hoping that the ability use quotes to search for a specific
phrase instead of breaking it apart and searching for multiple values
could be added to the rebol.org search engine.
Sunanda:
11-Dec-2005
< I can't seem to get rid of the /whatever after system with Google.>

Yes -- Google doesn't understand that system/words (say) is a single
item. While the REBOL.org seacth does. Ditto, the REBOL.org search
recognises ! and ? as part of a word raher than discardable syntax
-- so you can search for object? or datatype!

On the other hand, Google better handles phrases like "probe system"
because its indexes include proximity information..
No one search is ideal.
Anton:

Sunanda showed how I can use existing rebol.org technology (packages)

You can download Grahams' ML archive application (or. at least you
could until he started having trouble with 1and1's hosting).

Assuming it's still available, you get 70Meg of ML messages and it
has a search that runs on your ow desktop.
Ammon:
12-Dec-2005
I can search for scripts using {in author "Volker"} and get what
I'm looking for. Perhaps adding a {in topic "blah"} capability to
the ML search engine would be a good idea?
Sunanda:
13-Dec-2005
<< Is there a way to search the topic index other than by clicking
on a letter>>
In theory:

http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/ml-topic-index.r?i=probe

takes you straight to the entry (if any) for 'probe. But that looks
broken right now....I'll look into it.

Other than that, no. Only about 80% of the threads are indexed in
the topic index. When we get closer to 100%. we'll enhance the existing
search to take account of the topic index.....so results will include
and be prioritised by the topic index.

Well, you could try, in Google:
probe site:www.rebol.org inurl:topic

But that (as with any search anywhere) is dependent on Google having
the page indexed.

Graham in the All group asked:

<<Is it not true though that you are limited in what you can do with
rebol.org ? >>
Yes and no.

It's a shared server with the usual sort of quote limits, so that
stops some of the wilder plans.

On the other hand, the limits are fairly generous. Right now, we
do these sorts of numbers:
* 150,000 CGI executions per month
* 2.5 gigabytes of data served per month

* 70 megabytes of hard disk used (mainly for the Mailing List archive)

Of course some sort of bandwidth quota would exist with a dedicated
server too -- that one comes from the ISP, not the box.
----

We've had the same problem most of us have had with servers at one
time or another: REBOL going feral and failing to close tasks. That
brought down the server once, and got us suspended for about 30 minutes
until I beseeched forgiveness. Of course, that could happen with
a dedicated server (no one quite knows why it happens).

Similarly, we get some leak-through from what are supposed to be
the chinese walls; and that has caused the odd problem: mainly file
permissions going askew.
---

As Peter said, the main limitation is manpower. There are several
things under development at rebol.org right now; there is room for
many other improvement projects too.
Ingo:

Yes, I already get rebol.org updates by mail.
And if the ml is subscribed, too we would get:
- some traffic on the mailing list
- more people know about rebol.org

- during those quiet times where _nothing at all_ happens on rebol.com/net,
we show that at least _something_ is happening in rebol world.

Sunanda:

The upload obviously worked -- "+" is not an illegal file name character
on either Edgars machine or REBOL.org's current host

The notes on contributing a packgae do have detailed guidelines on
file naming to avoind problems -- see 2.1 here:

http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/boiler.r?display=cons-upload-package-files-help.html

But, of course, the author probably wrote the application before
they had any idea it might be rolled out as a package for use on
a wide range of platforms.
***

The bottom line is that + ought to work in a file name for the downloader,
so I'll get it fixed.

Robert, you may find the right glibc rpm here: http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/index.html

Be sure to read about the different ones, so you get the right one.

You should be able to have more than one version of glibc installed
at the same time (so everything will work). There are programs with
GUIs in RedHat Linux to install rpms, or you can use the rpm command
from the command line.

It's been a while, since I used Linux, and it can be a hazzle to
update sometimes.

And last but not least - Temple - system I liked most, although not
finished, not documented. It was/is done by Gabriele and allows for
complete separation of web designer and coder. Don't get me wrong,
but I think that such system is better than typical templating aproach.
If you will loose your GFX man, you will still be able to use it.
OTOH without the intervention of programmer, GFX man can't change

I already posted it to rebcode group as it's rebcode which allowed
me to this, but will like to post it here as well, because the main
reason was to improve the Rebol/Flash dialect again....

Maybe you know that in Flash you can have embedded outlined fonts
(independend on system) Most of the font's looks blury if you use
them as outlines so you must use special fonts to get non blured
pixel precision fonts. I was using some font editor just to see,
that it's pretty difficult to make such a font so I decided it would
be good to have possibility to make such a font just in any graphic
editor - as a bitmap and comnvert it to pixels. Here is the result:

Volker, I've just begun to really get into the dialect so I can't
comment on how one "translates" the actionscript into it, however,
the actionscript pdf is at least a start into trying to figure out
the examples.

At this point, I am taking one of the examples from the flash actionscript
pdf and rework it into the dialect form. Before I had this documentation
I was just guessing at the whole process.

Pekr, "why I am looking into mini-itx stuff". I have been waiting
for nano-ITX for the last two years ... and in that time Apple have
released Mac mini and announced Mac mini for x86.

I've done the sums, even with the wholesale prices I can get on most
of the PC components (Via board, laptop HDD, RAM, Case plus time/cost
of assembly), and the current Mac mini still comes out cheaper and
quieter even with all the Mac software pre-bundled.

If Apple can release the new Intel-based Mac mini at the same or
better prices, with the same or better specs, then why would anyone
wait for Via to get their act together when they can buy a cost-effective
off-the-shelf solution today, even if it means ditching OS X for

Joe, Mac mini does have a CPU fan, but it's pretty quiet (less than
22db from memory). Unit does get pretty hot if you start doing a
number of CPU intensive tasks at the same time, at which point you
can actually hear the CPU fan. I've not noticed any performance issues
with the 5400rpm drive, but I don't run any DB intensive stuff on
it. The units originally shipped with 256MB RAM, which was just not
enough for serious use, but I've found the 512MB they now ship with
to be more than adequate. Most apps run well, except OpenOffice which
runs like an absolute dog (both the X11 version and NeoOffice).

Well Henrik, a basic rule of security is that attacks only get stronger,
never weaker.
So just wait a while...... :-)

hmm, strange - RSP test app - under Seamonkey, I get mostly uncomplete
response - even for 4 apps test, three are returned imediatelly,
one is not loaded, I get busy indicator. Tried in IE, 4 example works,
16 example - I get RSP error 311 - invalid path value: hits

hopefully there is no problem with using localhost. In Seamonkey,
using http://localhost, I get three results, then it blocks ... with
using http://my-ip-addressI get 3 errors (311), then it blocks too
...

Will "Mike, I started using Apache and rebol as cgi, this is not
suited for performances as on every call to the cgi, a new instance
of rebol is initialized, run and closed.

I thought about using fastcgi, but never came to a working solution.
Now I use uniserve as main webserver, here some advantages:

-it is fast! On my local machine I get +- 600 req/sec for static
pages and a max of 160req/sec for dynamic rsp pages

-it is written in rebol, I could easly(less than 10 lines code) add
a rewrite engine

-child process are persistent, this mean you can keep state of your
web applications, implement caching, keep a pool of connection to
databases open (in apache + rebol/cgi you'd have to open and close
the connection for every request)
-it is written by Dock whom I may be the biggest fan ;-)

btw I'm running an unreleased version (have bought commercial support)
that support http 1.1, stuff like If-Modified etc..

If you have more specific questions, I'll be glad to try and answer."

hum... there is one thing I am not sure I get, what do you mean by
"server-side" (do you imply your's is not, and if so what does that
really mean?)

For the RSP WebApp test I get:

 The page cannot be displayed

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site
might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to
adjust your browser settings.

For the tests, I get the same results whither Cheyenne is running
or not.
Dockimbel:

Btw you shouldn't get any result if Cheyenne is not running !

IIRC via set-modes/get-modes, you can know what adapter is involved.
I am afraid there is no other way how to prevent this. Opening a
socket is OS thing imo, and I wonder if C socket functions allow
you to choose your device?

Terry: REBOL already supports SSL, it just a matter of knowing which
flag to set to switch to server-side SSL. Btw, if anyone can get
the info from Carl, that would be great ! (Pekr, you're kind of good
at extracting info from ppl ;-))

I had a go .. but couldn't get it to work.

What I would like to know, is if I can use it to get https urls from
Rebol, not just to encrypt my server?
Graham:
26-Feb-2007
which is what I tried last year and could not get working.
