Kaj 30-Jan-2013 [1319] | The text editor is new. I wanted to attempt it for the conference, but ran out of time |
Bo 30-Jan-2013 [1320] | If I wanted to run Red on my Windows-based computer, what would be the process to do it? Do I download the Red sources from Github and compile it on my computer? If so, are there instructions on how to do it with a free compiler? |
Kaj 30-Jan-2013 [1321] | A free compiler? Red and Red/System are the free compilers |
GrahamC 30-Jan-2013 [1322] | Bo, Rebol2 is used to create the Red/system binaries |
Kaj 30-Jan-2013 [1323x7] | You can run Red as an interpreter, although that's still limited, from here, in MSDOS/Red/console: |
The example programs are also in there, compiled and ready to run. For the console-pro, you need the libraries in the RedSystem folder
http://red.esperconsultancy.nl/Red-test/dir?ci=tip&name=MSDOS
Instructions are here:
http://web.syllable.org/news/2012-11-18-20-47-Red-high-level-programming-language-first-alpha.html
If you want to run the compilers, just follow the official documentation:

Bo 30-Jan-2013 [1330] | Thanks for the info. |
james_nak 30-Jan-2013 [1331] | Robert, thanks for posting the new droid version. |
Reichart 30-Jan-2013 [1332] | cool. |
BrianH 31-Jan-2013 [1333x2] | Kaj, could you post the code in scripts, or in the #Red group, instead of in the Announce group itself? |
Nice code though :) | |
Kaj 31-Jan-2013 [1335x2] | I'll revert to doing that in the future, but it seemed a major milestone and people seem to like it, so I made an exception |
The links to the scripts are already there
GrahamC 31-Jan-2013 [1337x2] | Maybe we need a separate Red Announce channel ...? |
Make it easier to find the Red vs Rebol announcements
Reichart 2-Feb-2013 [1339] | Agreed. |
Arnold 2-Feb-2013 [1340] | And a special Ann-Reply-Red too. |
Reichart 2-Feb-2013 [1341] | We orginally assigned "!" to apps written in REBOL. Perhaps we should consider dedicating a symbol to RED? May not be worth the overhead, depends how strongly people will over to RED I guess. |
Kaj 2-Feb-2013 [1342x4] | It already has # |
! would be wrong, because in time, Red will not be written in REBOL anymore
Ah, you mean an extra symbol for Red apps?
There aren't currently any that would need a dedicated group
Andreas 3-Feb-2013 [1346] | I think Reichart meant a special symbol for Red-related groups, if we add more of them. |
Gregg 6-Feb-2013 [1347] | Great news on 0MQ Kaj! |
Kaj 6-Feb-2013 [1348] | Thanks |
Endo 7-Feb-2013 [1349] | Cool work Kaj! |
Gregg 9-Feb-2013 [1350] | More great progress Kaj. I hope I can make time to play soooooon. |
james_nak 12-Feb-2013 [1351] | Thanks for you hard Kaj. |
sqlab 13-Feb-2013 [1352] | sorry to say, but this is just one more of the "too many sites" as MaxV calls them. it seems, that too many rebol user think they should do their own and can do it better. this may be, but I think the average Rebol user is just to much individualist to join |
MaxV 13-Feb-2013 [1353] | Well, at leat now you have VID source working on GitHub... :-) |
Endo 13-Feb-2013 [1354] | +1 for sqlab, +1 for MaxV :) |
Pekr 13-Feb-2013 [1355x5] | why don't we just follow Saphirion guys? They concentrate very fine rebollers, it is just that as a business entity, they implement, what they need most. But - everybody can influence it via donations imo, so I did, sent few dollars to R3 droid port, and R3 GUI on droid. |
in fact, it is even worse - GUI is done for quite some time, yet no new styles/skins appear, so nothing to complain here about - anyone of us can contribute. I just somehow don't believe, that yet-another-fork will make situation any better ....
In regards to above remark, I e.g. don't understand e.g. Nick requesting R2 being released, as R3 GUI is superior to R2, we just somehow magically don't start using it, dunno why.
What imo R3 misses is some built-in protocols, databases. OTOH Cyphre created TLS scheme .....
Well, and if no leadership for some fork comes up - here comes the Red ;-)
MaxV 13-Feb-2013 [1360x2] | Rebol 3 Bazaar is Saphirion Rebol 3, at the moment. Saphirion wanted to go on GitHub, but htey ahve not time to do it. Now everybody can contribute and speed up Rebol 3 devolpment. |
Because Rebol 3 stopped a month ago...
Pekr 13-Feb-2013 [1362] | well then, I consider Saphirion's work being a de-facto standard nowadays, unless Carl reappears actively reviewing new stuff ... |
MaxV 13-Feb-2013 [1363x3] | Be realistic, Rebol could be 1000 times better than Livecode or Java; but is wasn't supported. Rebol 3 closed source stopped in 2011, Rebol 3 open source stopped a moth ago. If ReBol 3 Bazaar will not take off, start to buy the tombstone for Rebol. |
Red is total another type of programming language, it has to be compiled.
I pushed Facebook Rebol group from 100 to 263 users now, but people is loosing interest in Rebol, I write the Rebol blog quite every day; and I'll dedicate my time also to Rebol Bazaar. I don't know why Rebol software is orphan and I don't care. I'll try to rise again it in the Olympus of best software (since nobody else do it), if you are with me you are welcome. I have no enemies, just friends.
DocKimbel 13-Feb-2013 [1366x2] | MaxV: you might have missed the announce, but Red has an interpreter and a console since new year. |
You might want to check this: http://static.red-lang.org/console-pro.png
Maxim 13-Feb-2013 [1368] | Max you have to understand that most users already use Altme, and Stack overflow these days. rebol.org and Github are there for source sharing. R3 is not dying, its not Carl's job of moving it forward. R3 is now on Android, for example, this wasn't available just a month ago. |
