somehow rebol2 switched timezones ... without leaving my home!

R3 uses a totally different approach to solve such issues completely,
which I am not sure is easily backportable to R2

Exponent with a negative number gives error on R2, I've submitted
as a bug report on rambo: -4784
>> -2 ** -4
** Math Error: Positive number required
Fixed in R3.

REBOL 2.7.8 (In Development)

Carl, is this still in development ?

It has been put on hold for a bit in favor of R3 development, but
not canceled.

It is important, because R2 is the only official professionnal product.
BrianH

R2 is important for other reasons, but not as much for that reason.
Most people don't buy R2, even in SDK form.
R2 is currently in maintenance mode, with an emphasis on backwards
compatibility. Sometimes we get new backported features from R3,
but for the most part it is only bug fixes. The main project is R3
now.

That's ok, but in profressionnal world even if the main project is
R3, R2 is the main product. And you need to see bug fixes, supports
and so forth.

You need compatibility with Windows7, new version of Linux and MacOSX.
And what about Windows Phone ?
BrianH

[2098x2]
Windows Phone 7 won't get a REBOL version without a ground-up rewrite,
as the platform doesn't allow native code. Older Windows Mobile releases
never were supported, though R3's host kit could in theory support
them.
Most of what is needed for Windows 7 compatibility was also needed
for Windows 2000 compatibility (I reported it then), and mostly in
the /View installer and registry usage. That installer is in the
community-supported portion of R2, so if you download the SDK source
you can take a look. The installer changes are intended for inclusion
in 2.7.8, as the changes doc indicates.

Since a stable GUI based release of R3 is far off still, I agree
that R2 should be updated
It shouldn't take that long .. I'm particularly interested in the
date parsing bug in odbc
The community of customers who *paid* for the SDK need continued
support

I also agree. It shouldn't take that long, given availability of
developer resources.
There are other bugs in ODBC support as well, particularly in support
for datatypes of recent MS SQL versions.

I'm not sure developer resources makes any difference since this
is all closed source
maybe Carl can finally open source it ?
BrianH
11-Dec-2010
[2107x2]
Ask Carl. Some of the source is not his to open, afaik. Much less
of the R3 native code is licensed commercial code.
Closed or open, developer resources are still limited, mostly by
financial issues.

Carl has offered several times to release the odbc sources if anyone
were prepared to fix things

Just needs someone who can fix the sources

Do we have a list of know bugs of R2 ?

Transparancy (?) is important. Not seeking for a problem, if the
problem is already known...
Yes, there's a lack of developper... Maybe the community loose developper
because of an R3 always delayed...

You need compatibility with Windows7
 - I do not miss compatibility with Windows 7, do you?

Nicolas, there is a beta r2 world but I think the bugs should all
be listed here as well

For R2 bugs we have RAMBO:

The last message in the bugs channel of the R2-beta world are from
Sept
And from the 2.7.8 channel .. from April

I run Windows 7, so I am keenly aware of the need for compatibility,
especially since those bugs also affect Vista for the most part.
We have been discussing things in the open here in this group instead
of the R2-Beta world (which is why this group is not web-public.

The problem with R2 bugfixing is, that only Carl can patch the code..
and Carl is in a cave mode again... or travelling around the world
:-)
BrianH

Cave mode. Just heard from him. We'll be back to R2 development soon
:)

so it's apport from rebol3 ?

is it still usefull to have a R2-Beta world or move into a group
of rebol3 ?
How to join R2-Beta ?

It was used for chat about R2 bug fixing, but Carl is not visiting
it anymore.

So a new group group in rebol3 world ?

I think that Carl, Gabriele or BrianH can give you R2-beta access.
If you need to report R2 bug, you can use any (not R3 related) group
here and submit it into Rambo.
Henrik

Yes, Rambo is still the best option for R2 bugs.

I think the r2-beta world can go alive again if Carl would like to
participate and next round of the R2 improvement.
The main difference between r2-beta and this world is, that it's
allowed to upload files on r2-beta and it was used to give us pre-official
releases.
BrianH

It might come to that, but I am hoping to keep using this group as
long as possible to manage the R2 release discussions.

We've been working on 2.7.8 today, and the test builds look good.
New stuff coming from R2/Forward :)
Does ACCESS-OS do anything on Windows?
(Whoops, wrong group)

what is 2.7.8 going to address? Was the release needed? :-)
GrahamC

Hope the odbc date bug is fixed ...
Pekr, yes, most serious developers are using R2 for production use
