[Syllable] The free desktop and server operating system family

Syllable is OK, Petr
In a week we have a small conference, our second, in the Netherlands.
We will make an important announcement there
We have several things coming up, including a new release

important announcement? Interesting! Are you becoming AmigaOS 5?
:-)
is there a chance REBOL will remain for scripting? I mean - with
R3 model, there is now certain possibility to use R3 open source
parts in syllable, and then, theoretically, cloning rebol itself
should be an easier task? Is Syllable strictly open source? Or could
it live with closed source R3 rebol.dll?
Kaj

[780x3]
Yes :-)
I'll not spoil the conference by specifying what I said yes to :-)
But as I've already said here before, we're already using ORCA for
some scripting. Because the base system has to stay open source

I hope Yes went to REBOL. Hands off of Amiga Inc. :-)

btw - is Syllable any close to AmigaOS? What most users value about
AmigaOS was - it was very responsive, dynamic, could be scripted
to hell.....
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[787]
Yes, it is that, although extensive scripting will come in a later
phase, as with AmigaOS
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[788x3]
.... eh, it does not translate itself as well ... scripted to death,
till death ... but it does not translate well too probably :-)
drivers are part of kernel space, or user space?
btw - how does Syllable team motivate itself in today's IT world?
We have some Linux distros, catching to user requirements, e.g. Ubuntu.
Do you do Syllable mostly for fun, or do you really find some place
for its existance in today's crowded OS world?
Kaj

[791x4]
Both. Mostly the BeOS model of having userspace servers for as much
as possible. But our network stack and drivers are in kernel space,
for example, which makes it more efficient than BeOS
Carl will be happy to hear that this makes our select() implementation
more elegant than in BeOS :-)
Syllable is something special. It has tremendous added value over
systems such as Linux
It's just not ready for production yet
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[795]
so what is that added value?
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[796x2]
The OS scene seems to be crowded, but they're basically all the same
systems
Added value? Depends on who you're explaining to. Here, I would say,
having the Amiga spirit

[798]
is there live CD to try?
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[799x2]
Sure, for two years now, I think

don't you "fear" BeOS clones? hmm, actually I wonder, if work on
those continues or not. The most vital (or the only one?) seems to
be Haiku?
I will try it over weekend :-)
Kaj

[803x2]
Yes, they're most like us. But they started many years after us,
actually looked at our code to see how it's done, and are still years
behind...
Excellent. Have fun!
Pekr

[805x2]
thanks ... so you think Haiku is nowhere close to release?
Are those philosophies so different, that you can't e.g. merge?
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[807]
We're nowhere near 1.0, so Haiku certainly isn't. Despite their having
said otherwise as early as several years ago
Pekr

[808]
will your announcement be published on your site after the conference?
:-)
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[809x3]
There are tow big differences. They're recreating BeOS R5, so they're
working on the past, while we have always designed the best system
for the future. The other is that we're GPL/LGPL. They chose to recreate
their own code because they chose the MIT license
So, they can't use our code, while we can use theirs when it fits
:-)
Yes, we will announce on our site and here, after the conference
in a week and a half

So, Syllable is a desktop OS ?
Any databases on it ?
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[814]
Graham - yes, I think it is a desktop ...
Graham

[815]
( it's in the title of this channel ! )
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[816]
I expect it being posix compliant, so theoretically, ports of stuff
like that should not be a big problem ....
Graham

[817]
http://kamidake.other-space.com/is down
Pekr
15-Jun-2007
[818]
what is that?
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[819x2]
We have ports of Berkeley DB and SQLite, so far
Yes, the Kamidake software repository is gone, sadly. And we still
have to clean up the links. Our own releases are on SourceForge,
though
Graham

No printing support yet
Kaj
15-Jun-2007
[822x2]
We're quite POSIX compatible, but sadly, a lot of software assumes
Linux these days. Porting is relatively easy, but still an art -
or slavery, depending how you look at it :-)
Yes, we have printing since the last release, although it's still
buggy

So, what do real live users use it for ?
