Kaj 22-Aug-2007 [1094x2] | Yup :-) |
I might also mention that, a few days ago, I also ran AROS on Syllable Server. On Bochs, similar to how I did on Syllable Desktop a few weeks ago
Pekr 22-Aug-2007 [1096] | Kaj, it seems to me, that even osnews.com audience is slowly warming up to the Syllable, don't you think? :-) At least response is vital .... |
Kaj 22-Aug-2007 [1097] | Yeah. We had to make an awful lot of effort for our PR campaign of the last months, though, to make it happen |
Pekr 22-Aug-2007 [1098x2] | what do you mean by effort? |
As for me, I tried to contact Tom Halwerda one year ago, when RT announced they are developing R3. He refused to publish it. I then objected, that they are posting much less important newsbits from various other communities, but he said that mainstream systems as Win, OS-X have some priviledge ...
Kaj 22-Aug-2007 [1100x2] | News events every other day and articles to go with them on OSNews don't get created by the fairies overnight |
Unless I'm a fairy, that is...
Pekr 22-Aug-2007 [1102] | I hope this time, once R3 beta is out, they will not hesitate to post about it. And I also think, that Syllable helped REBOL on osnews a bit. Because if OS designers decided to use such language, it ought to be rather good :-) |
Kaj 22-Aug-2007 [1103x2] | I suspect Thom's objection was mainly that you wanted him to publish it a year before there was any new product :-) |
That's what I mean, we have been consistently producing real news
Pekr 22-Aug-2007 [1105] | I don't agree though. IIRC interview with Guido about upcoming P3 was there. P3 development has started just recently, and is due to be finished next summer ..... |
Kaj 22-Aug-2007 [1106x3] | Don't worry, though, R3 will be mentioned on OSNews in Syllable articles :-) |
Dunno, we were just contacted by the Python crew about Syllable support in P3. It's for real. You can never know that with a closed-source company - especially not one from the Amiga scene...
Can't say I blame Thom. He's been good with us
Robert 24-Aug-2007 [1109] | Kaj, can you give me a management summary about the differences Syllable Server / Desktop? |
Kaj 24-Aug-2007 [1110x2] | Yes: Server runs on Linux, while Desktop has its own kernel and filesystem |
Server currently doesn't have the Syllable GUI yet, but it will come
Robert 24-Aug-2007 [1112x2] | Why not use the desktop kernel and FS for the server side too? |
I mean, what's the benefit of getting a server based on the linux kernel? Than I can use Linux right from the start.
Kaj 24-Aug-2007 [1114x4] | Because they were designed for desktop services. Linux is continuously optimized as a server |
Also, Linux is stable now, not a few years from now
And it has software that also takes time to port to Desktop
Of course you can use Linux, but what is Linux? We are providing a Linux, and we think it will be a damn fine one
Graham 24-Aug-2007 [1118x2] | what I would like to see is a server linux that runs vmware out of the box |
without having to keep recompiing the kernel
Kaj 24-Aug-2007 [1120] | Ubuntu and others do |
Graham 24-Aug-2007 [1121] | not without some work |
Kaj 24-Aug-2007 [1122] | I'm currently integrating QEmu |
Graham 24-Aug-2007 [1123x3] | various how toos ... |
qemu ? run windows 20003 on that?
I saw a how to on that somewhere
Kaj 24-Aug-2007 [1126] | Sure |
Graham 24-Aug-2007 [1127] | to run 2003 on ec2 I think |
Kaj 24-Aug-2007 [1128x4] | Yeah, such combinations are interesting |
We're on OSNews again (well, we haven't been off the front page for a few weeks), this time with our new Syllable Newsletter:
http://osnews.com/story.php/18508/Revived-Syllable-Newsletter-Published
There are mentions of REBOL and AROS in there
Kaj 10-Sep-2007 [1132x2] | Our provider went belly up, and I'm now rewriting our site in REBOL: |
http://syllable.org | |
Kaj 6-Oct-2007 [1134x6] | The time has arrived! We have released Syllable Server |
It's a development release. A lot of work remains to be done in the time to come, but I made sure it's usable for several things already
It doesn't have the Syllable graphical environment yet, but it can run graphical SDL and DirectFB programs
That includes emulators. QEmu is included, so you can run many other operating systems on Server, including itself
The system is very small, so it's suitable both as a virtualisation host and as a virtualisation guest
Both REBOL/Core and ORCA are included
Graham 6-Oct-2007 [1140] | When is the GUI due ? |
Kaj 6-Oct-2007 [1141] | I'm going to pull an R3 on you and say When It's Ready :-) |
Graham 6-Oct-2007 [1142] | end of 2008 then? |
Kaj 6-Oct-2007 [1143] | The first phase, building the base Linux, was mine. Now it's up to our project leader to port the Syllable stuff. I think I'm going to push him like we push Carl. :-) Actually, I'm hoping he will feel the pressure from people like you asking for it :-) |
