Gregg 26-May-2013 [2004x2] | I don't think it's contradictory. He focuses deeply on one thing at a time, and everything else is lucky to get any time at all. It's just that now, Roku is his focus. |
OTOH, his work there may lead to new thoughts for REBOL and other languages targeted at small devices in a networked world.
Kaj 26-May-2013 [2006] | It's a bit odd that his creation is so fantastic that he can't use it |
GrahamC 26-May-2013 [2007] | Perhaps it was never designed to be use in memory constrained embedded devices |
Kaj 26-May-2013 [2008] | Perhaps it was never designed to be used? |
GrahamC 26-May-2013 [2009] | I smell a troll |
Kaj 26-May-2013 [2010] | I smell excuses |
Pekr 26-May-2013 [2011] | I think that reason for not using R3 is not technology related. Carl even talked about it in the past, that - maybe one day. Imo the reason is two-three-fold - 1) RT's failure, to set up R3 in the wild, business wise 2) at the time Carl joined Roku, R3 was not open-sourced. 3) I also remember, that on R3 Chat, he asked about Gstreamer. So imo even a toolset problem - R3 lacking extensions to popular subsystems, and also risky situation - what if Carl would decide to leave the company? Who would work with his R3 code? |
Kaj 27-May-2013 [2012] | Agreed |
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2013] | Seems like I missed the chance to join the chat with Carl and you guys on StackOverflow, but I was in my dreams (or nightmare about autorelease). ;) |
GrahamC 28-May-2013 [2014x2] | Well, you need to be prepared and have sufficient reputation on SO. It took Carl nearly 45 minutes before he was able to speak! |
It was somewhat frustrating for all of us waiting.
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2016] | Any reason he doesn't wanna do such limited time chats here? |
GrahamC 28-May-2013 [2017x2] | probably hasn't got altme installed |
He said he would only use r3chat before .. but he says that the SO chat is very nice and usable from a browser
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2019x2] | Yeah, I just remembered, he said something about being able to chat from any computer. |
How hard can it be to create a terminal version of AltME? Well...
GrahamC 28-May-2013 [2021] | that is R3 chat |
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2022] | But is that usable with e.g. this world? If yes, then he could just use that and join a chat here, couldn't he? |
GrahamC 28-May-2013 [2023x2] | not with this world |
I think he's had world changing experience working at Roku :)
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2025] | So How hard can it be to create a terminal version of AltME? Well... |
GrahamC 28-May-2013 [2026] | An event driven terminal?? |
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2027x2] | No, an interface to this world, but from a text terminal. Like R3 chat, but which actually work with AltME worlds. |
If he did that, he could join this world from any computer.
GrahamC 28-May-2013 [2029] | perhaps he doesn't want to |
Oldes 28-May-2013 [2030] | fine.. so after 45min of waiting, what he said instead of a note, that SO chat is nice? |
Pekr 28-May-2013 [2031x2] | Well, I have mixed feelings ... Carl simply gave up on Rebol and its message imo ... felt strange: " I'm no longer in the mode of convincing the world about Rebol. I've learned a lot over the last couple years in the trenches." ..... later .... "So, I know really well now that Rebol is not for every developer.... but it would get more interest if R3+GUI was easy to download an get running on a variety of those devices on your list." |
As for why he does not use R3 at Roku, he confirmed that it might be difficult to mix various IPs of several companies ....
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2033] | @Pekr, do you think, that's the full story? |
Pekr 28-May-2013 [2034] | I don't know, what do you mean? Full story of what? Well, maybe I will say it arrogantly - but Carl faced the reality we all were facing in our companies - if your tool does not fit the company's toolset, you might be tolerated, if it is open sourced or free. I remember my issues with my boss, trying to convince him why should I buy /Command to get access to shell and ODBC, if other free tools can do it. And that was it - REBOL lived in isolation and Carl, joining Roku, found out about the outer world working under different conditions of reality :-) |
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2035] | So less of "mix various IPs". |
Pekr 28-May-2013 [2036] | I expect so, but that is just my speculation .... |
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2037x3] | I got the same feeling. |
But you see, since Carl is the creator of REBOL and has access to the sources, the situation is different than with you and your boss.
I had the same argument as you with a boss of a company, I did free-lance work for. I was able to convince them to buy REBOL/Command though, because the develop time went down by a factor 10 or so. A bit along the same type or argument, I convinced a business partner of that company to implement XML-RPC instead of using SOAP based calling method across the internet. It saved us months of development time, and the other company could implement XML-RPC feature within days. Just keep on arguing, also from a cost viewpoint. Don't give in! :) It pays.
Pekr 28-May-2013 [2040] | Geomol - my boss bought me an SDK, because he know, that I would not program in anything else. It was not so expensive after all, not for a company running systems like SAP :-) I personally bought SDKs, Several command versions (prior to SDK), Pro version, and one IOS for 2K USD .... but nowadays I can state, that sponsoring stuff on voluntary basis is even better. So I actually put more money in Red than into REBOL SDK for e.g. :-) |
GrahamC 28-May-2013 [2041] | I didn't know you did coding |
Pekr 28-May-2013 [2042x4] | Some conversion bridges, simple stuff - pullind data from multiple systems, generating excel files (via html) for customers, website generation to intranet, automated notifications, etc. |
Data migration from our system (used by cca 80 ppl) to SAP was all done/prepared by REBOL ....
I was so fast in pulling data, parsing CSVs, etc., that noone objected .....
Well, as i thik about it, it adheres to what just Geomol stated - fast prototyping, they could not beat me easily ....
Endo 28-May-2013 [2046] | Ah it's nice to read Carl's posts on stackoverflow, I hope he answers some questions time to time.. |
Pekr 28-May-2013 [2047x2] | What is more interesting imo is Carl attending a devcon. I believe guys will discuss many ideas about further Rebol development .... |
I have following strategy to discuss - Carl always liked to work on HW too - Amiga, Viscorp set-top-box. Now he is with Roku, gaining important experience. Now let's say Roku goes under, some investor appears, Carl buys AmigaIP and we will get first Rebol/Amiga device out :-)
GrahamC 28-May-2013 [2049] | You're fantasizing! |
Pekr 28-May-2013 [2050] | yes, running on coffee :-) |
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2051] | And then we build a spaceship and take a trip to the Moon. I always wanted that! |
Pekr 28-May-2013 [2052] | OK, I build a telescope for our observatory, to watch you walking on the moon :-) |
Geomol 28-May-2013 [2053] | Yeah, we can't have, people say, it didn't happen. ;) |
