Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4518x3] | And no graphical interfaces, of course, because that would make you use some half cross-platform C/C++ toolkit with huge bindings |
So I've been standing outside in the snow for five years with my command-line programs, looking through the window at the people eating rich roasts before the fire place...
Please don't say I'm not patient...
Henrik 4-Oct-2007 [4521] | :-) |
Gabriele 4-Oct-2007 [4522] | wait, 1st august was not "beta", it was "getting the alpha to a wider audience". it has been suggested that it would have been bad to do so, so in the end it wasn't done. the dates were not unrealisting, they were based on the idea of releasing "early". that idea was later on opposed and so it wasn't done. also, the august date was based on the fact that me and cyphre had to be away from r3 development for august and september, and so we thought it was better to release rather than delay two months. |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4523] | That's what it turned into. Originally it was promised as beta |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4524] | An early alpha followed by a beta a month later was promised. |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4525] | It was fine with me if it had been an alpha release, but it's several months later and we have nothing |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4526x2] | But from waiting for Rebol releases before I knew that it simply wasn't going to happen. |
Carl just doesn't understand the damage he does to the community with these totally unrealistic announcements
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4528x2] | Yeah, I adjusted too, but there is no adjusting to this, because there is still nothing and no meaningful date |
Yes, that's also my impression. I want it to change for the future
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4530] | I don't think it's possible to change Carl without someone managing him. |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4531] | Right, but he's the boss. He has to take responsibility |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4532] | Pekr was supposed to be the community representative to liase with him. |
Gabriele 4-Oct-2007 [4533] | so, in the end, if Carl is quiet, people complain, if he talks, people complain :-) |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4534x2] | Petr is someone else with criticism who was rolled into the group. But he can't be responsible |
No, we just ask that any promises are backed up
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4536] | Personally I think that Henrik's fears are mistaken. |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4537] | I didn't know that you and Cyphre were unavailable in August and September, but it explains that there seems to have been very little tangible progress |
Gabriele 4-Oct-2007 [4538] | i think it was stated clearly that the "july release" if you want to call it that way would not have been complete. there has been a delay in that it went from 15 july to basically mid august. but at that point, Carl has been convinced that it was not a good idea to release an uncomplete product. so that's what it is - saying that there's nothing does not help. what was supposed to be released on july is there already. it was just been asked not to release it because it is not complete. |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4539] | If users here get to try alpha out and ask questions, there's no compunction on you to answer them. |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4540] | I'm also unaware of any reversal of decision on releasing early. This is the problem: we are kept in the dark about what's really going on |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4541x2] | The rebolweek blog that was posted of the R3 progress showed that things were slow |
5th Sept ... new View system!
Henrik 4-Oct-2007 [4543] | damn, already a month ago? :-) |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4544] | Gabriele, you're still speaking from your own point of view. Carl needs to start imagining our point of view. We have nothing but broken promises, regardless of how much the man behind the curtain has |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4545x3] | I remember when Rebol was first released .. now that was alpha! |
no console history, no ability to copy the console
is this going to be worse than that??
Henrik 4-Oct-2007 [4548] | no. we already have console history, so it's better than that. |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4549] | Which is my point. |
Henrik 4-Oct-2007 [4550] | right, we should define when to release, depending on whether we have console history or not :-) |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4551] | If I may offer some experience from our release-early, release-often Syllable project: we make semi-weekly development builds, even between our alpha releases every three or four months. I have been amazed at the download peaks we get when we announce a release, while the weekly builds were almost it already |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4552] | is that the current alpha appears to be more adanced than the first alphas were when they were released ~9 years ago |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4553] | People understand it very well when you say: this is an official release, and that is a development release |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4554] | Carl ..or whoever is advising him, underestimates us |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4555x2] | Yeah. I understand all the arguments given. The problem is, when you open yourself for feedback, you get a lot of idiots, if I may say so. But this obscures the fact that the silent majority are reasonable humans |
For our download numbers, I'm also amazed at how little feedback we actually get, even about things that we know are broken. Often, we try to push people to report stuff we don't know yet, but they assume that they shouldn't speak up about a non-finished release
Mchean 4-Oct-2007 [4557] | such a depressing conversation |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4558] | It is |
Graham 4-Oct-2007 [4559] | Well, I've posted my view point as expressed here on Rebolweek blog. |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4560] | Very balanced summary; thanks for that |
Oldes 4-Oct-2007 [4561] | Kaj, if you just want to create simple forms, I don't know, why you cannot use R2. I'm still developing for R2 and don't have any problem if the R3 will come a few months later. And I think, you can simply ask Gabriele to get access to R3-alpha world and help if you can. |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4562] | R2 is a monolithic, closed product that doesn't integrate on a platform level. I need the R3 libraries, even if it does a lot less than R2 |
Oldes 4-Oct-2007 [4563] | Then ask Gabriele and you can help with Linux porting. |
Kaj 4-Oct-2007 [4564x2] | This is the most important strategic innovation of R3, and it's long overdue |
I did. It doesn't seem to be time yet, so the matter comes back to planning
Pekr 4-Oct-2007 [4566] | Kaj - you should know that I strongly disagree with Henrik's aproach. Although I have total trust to his developer's skills, I would probably fire him as a marketing responsible person :-) |
Henrik 4-Oct-2007 [4567] | that is because Pekr doesn't develop software from the bottom up... :-) |
