Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [371x2] | And that suggests that we are a competitor |
Ask Karl | |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [373] | yeah :-( but in a way it would be good, because Rebol itself is not GPL friendly. OpenRebol would cover GPL friendly areas. |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [374] | But that's only the code base, Kaj. We are growing the language. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [375] | The simple fact for RT is that they can't use Orca code |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [376] | Ok, then, is it possible to change the Orca license to BSD ? So it would be BSDRebol ? |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [377] | That's in Karl's hands |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [378] | Karl's abandoning it, so perhaps he wouldn't mind. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [379] | Just one way to find out |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [380] | Let's to it. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [381] | The other issue is that Karl is continuing with Thune. That's going to be the first place to get code from to integrate with Orca, and that would make it LGPL again |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [382] | what is Thune? |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [383] | Karl's own design for a language, retaining REBOL syntax but not semantics |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [384x2] | Karl's other language, still similar rebol to but more divergent (and newer) than orca. |
Kaj, that might be a problem.
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [386] | If we would change to BSD, yes. In general, that would make it impossible to integrate LGPL code, which is more plentiful than BSD code |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [387] | Mmm... what to do ? |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [388] | LGPL is the easier route. Changing to BSD could extend REBOL's reach, however. For example, when integrating an Orca core with a BSD REBOL/Services implementation into some other product |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [389] | Is it possible to have both, somehow ....? |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [390] | No |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [391] | (shoot all the lawyers) |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [392x2] | The only way would be to maintain an LGPL-free core and a version with LGPL-libraries. But that doesn't solve the issues with the BSD core and it starts looking a lot like a fork |
You could ask Karl and I expect this issue will be settled quickly...
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [394] | Ok, I think I'm happy enough with LGPL, I guess.. |
Mchean 13-Jul-2006 [395] | who is leading Orca development? |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [396] | Anton :-) |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [397x2] | Um... Jaime is, kind of... He seems to be the one who knows the most about it at the moment. |
But I'm making a bit of a push. :)
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [399x2] | Jaime is reportedly dropping REBOL... |
I think he has some post-natal depression ;-)
Mchean 13-Jul-2006 [401] | i wish my c skills were good |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [402] | Jaime said he's still going to hang around with Orca as on a hobby basis. |
Mchean 13-Jul-2006 [403x2] | thanks - i think this is a really good idea, should of happened a long time ago |
with Rebol itself I mean
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [405x2] | Yep |
So, Anton, what's your stake in this?
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [407] | I want the code to be open so there's no limit to my understanding of it. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [408] | Is it a hobby for you, too, or anything else? |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [409] | I don't support GPL in any way, that is a bitch license. LGPL I don't know about. But if RT releases some parts, I hope those are BSD. And if Orca can serve for REBOL back, that is a strange situation to have .... |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [410] | I guess you just use GPL applications ;-) |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [411] | Orca can= Orca can't |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [412] | Am I the only one who use Rebol professionally full time? |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [413] | Nope |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [414] | I use, but I do not link to them probably? If GPL means I have to release ALL my app code, even the code COMPLETLY irrelevant to the GPL stuff I linked too, then it sucks big way. I don't hesitate to release any improvements/changes produced by developer to the GPL part in question, but not the whole app. |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [415] | It's more of a religion for me, I guess. |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [416] | business should be allowed ... and to allow business, you should not push anyone to unwanted/unrelated actions .... |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [417] | I guess that's why IBM likes GPL so much... |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [418x2] | Pekr, relax. That's ground covered by Rebol. |
Maybe someone else will come along with a BSD rebol clone one day, but Rebol and Orca being at opposite ends of an axis is not a bad situation. Nicely balanced.
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [420] | OK, should relax probably. It is just, it seems a bit contraproductive to me, which is a pity .... because if RT could use some good things, maybe they would decide to open some of theirs ones, as e.g. Console, etc., but it is a pity, the way for cooperation is ... nearly impossible .... |
