Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [332] | He hangs on and engages the community |
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [333] | Ah. But I am not Steve. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [334] | True, me neither |
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [335x2] | Maybe Anton will take his role. |
*Jaime* dissapears leaving some blue smoke track.
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [337x2] | On the interest in Orca. As I mentioned before, Orca is included in Syllable 0.6.1. In that form, many thousands of copies have been distributed already all over the world. We're currently up to about 4500 downloads of the install CD, so those would presumably be people really running the system, 2300 live CDs and an unknown number of VMware images, which have been very popular in the past. It's also in the shops on the DVD version of Linux Format magazine. I don't know how big the DVD part of its circulation is, but it must be many thousands |
Now not many of those Syllable users would currently be using Orca, but starting with the next Syllable release I am writing and rewriting system tools in Orca, so basically all future Syllable users would be using Orca. The next step of course is to make the developers among them aware of it
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [339] | Hmmmm... :) |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [340] | Trojan horse approach? |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [341] | You want to make Orca do nasty things? ;-) |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [342] | that is sure to get someones atttention |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [343] | Seeing that the Orca Campfire chat is now closed, some people here would like an Orca world and I'm running a number of AltME worlds anyway, I started one. If you would like an account, ask me here, or log in as guest. The world name is Orca and the guest password is guest |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [344] | So next I would like to know how to update those afore-mentioned Orca webpages with the new Orca direction. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [345] | No need to mention your mail address if it's in your account information here |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [346x2] | Why, when we have the Orca group here ? |
We should seriously think about a name change. There is confusion with other Orcas. (Everybody seems to like this name.) Eg. http://live.gnome.org/Orca/
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [348] | Yes, there are two other Orca languages |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [349] | Kaj, also, we can get web published here very easily if/when we want. |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [350] | Rolca :-) |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [351] | lober? |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [352] | yeah, why not .... |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [353] | OpenRebol |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [354] | R#, R2 (rebol too) |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [355] | vote against R2 |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [356] | oREBOL (aka OpenRebol) is a good one ... |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [357] | People have mentioned that we're the guest of RT here. Although Carl is fairly OK with clone development now, we're still a competitor, so a separate world may be the polite thing to do. At least I'm not sure it would be appreciated to make this group web public |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [358] | OBOL? |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [359] | open rebol is good name oREBOL may suggest object oriented ... |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [360] | Yes, short form when we need it, kind of a standard shortened name convention. |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [361] | kaj: I would foresee a problem when/if Orca would become so powerful that it can rival/surpass /Command functionality. |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [362] | OpenRebol is unambiguous. |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [363] | decided - OpenREBOL, oREBOL shortened ... :-) |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [364] | We are not a competitor at all. |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [365] | remember to tell Jaime :-) |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [366] | You probably know how Carl has thought about that in the past |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [367x2] | as in ice hockey, some playerd so play on so called farms ... we are RT's farm ... if the like something, they can use it, no? :-) |
players do play ... | |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [369] | No, RT can't use it, because Orca is LGPL |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [370] | LGPL? Why that? Why not BSD? Uh .... so much about openess :-) |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [371x2] | And that suggests that we are a competitor |
Ask Karl | |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [373] | yeah :-( but in a way it would be good, because Rebol itself is not GPL friendly. OpenRebol would cover GPL friendly areas. |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [374] | But that's only the code base, Kaj. We are growing the language. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [375] | The simple fact for RT is that they can't use Orca code |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [376] | Ok, then, is it possible to change the Orca license to BSD ? So it would be BSDRebol ? |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [377] | That's in Karl's hands |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [378] | Karl's abandoning it, so perhaps he wouldn't mind. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [379] | Just one way to find out |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [380] | Let's to it. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [381] | The other issue is that Karl is continuing with Thune. That's going to be the first place to get code from to integrate with Orca, and that would make it LGPL again |
