JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [296x4] | And the easiest way for that is add the missing natives and mezz. |
Anton why fork. There is nobody else developing it.
Once the all the natives and mezz are completed then we can talk about enhancements.
Like Kaj request for returning the last element.
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [300] | Hmm.. So you think there is lots of work that can still be done before the need to fork becomes a strong issue. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [301x2] | Exactly |
Pick the low-hanging fruit. There's a lot left here
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [303] | Ok, so we can pool our resources and leave the arguments til a later stage. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [304] | Yup |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [305] | Alright, sounds reasonable. |
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [306] | You see the light! |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [307x2] | I had to work through the issues. :) |
It's good to know where everyone stands.
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [309x3] | I agree with Kaj here ... develop what is missing, then go R3 route compatibility wise .... good aproach imo! |
so I think we have got general agreement about the course here?
Now just how to make those 3 rumoured complete rebol clones authors to release the code to Orca? :-)
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [312] | Life is funny for months, I encourage people to work on Orca, when KarlR and myself decide to quit, we get new fuel. Funny. |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [313] | Cycles of energy. |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [314x2] | Karl wants to quit Orca? |
is there anything fruitfull in R#, which could be donated to Orca? Have you talked to Doc? He will imo never return to R# anyway .... :-)
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [316] | Jaime, I told you to have perseverence :-) |
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [317x2] | I talked to many gurus, but none wants to work together, too many lone wolfs here. |
It doesn't matter now, Orca works, it is just missing completeness in natives and that I the port system.
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [319] | You can't expect a deep thing like a language platform to catch on within a few months, or even a few years. Especially not without any advertising |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [320] | hmm, what a pity ... if all agree, that having OS Rebol is a good thing, even for RT, then I wonder why noone want to release? What is the point in having Rebol clone sitting on own hd, unreleased? |
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [321] | The port systems is the big task. Becuase I want something new. I don't like the current problems with the existing design. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [322] | You know how Steve Dekorte has been doing it with Io for more than four years, that's the way to do it |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [323] | new system? |
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [324] | Pekr, they can sell their solutions with their own proprietary language. |
Pekr 13-Jul-2006 [325] | ah, then business activities .... |
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [326x2] | Kaj, Yes. I have study that well, but we need native co-routines. |
There is no free-lunch | |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [328] | I mean the way Steve works |
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [329x2] | Pekr, another reason is shyness and desire of learning only. So they avoid any legal problems. However I don't see how a clone can have legal implications. It is not like we are copying the src code, and re-engineering is allowed. |
Kaj. I don't follow you. Do you mean his leadership style?
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [331x2] | Yes |
He hangs on and engages the community
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [333] | Ah. But I am not Steve. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [334] | True, me neither |
JaimeVargas 13-Jul-2006 [335x2] | Maybe Anton will take his role. |
*Jaime* dissapears leaving some blue smoke track.
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [337x2] | On the interest in Orca. As I mentioned before, Orca is included in Syllable 0.6.1. In that form, many thousands of copies have been distributed already all over the world. We're currently up to about 4500 downloads of the install CD, so those would presumably be people really running the system, 2300 live CDs and an unknown number of VMware images, which have been very popular in the past. It's also in the shops on the DVD version of Linux Format magazine. I don't know how big the DVD part of its circulation is, but it must be many thousands |
Now not many of those Syllable users would currently be using Orca, but starting with the next Syllable release I am writing and rewriting system tools in Orca, so basically all future Syllable users would be using Orca. The next step of course is to make the developers among them aware of it
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [339] | Hmmmm... :) |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [340] | Trojan horse approach? |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [341] | You want to make Orca do nasty things? ;-) |
Henrik 13-Jul-2006 [342] | that is sure to get someones atttention |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [343] | Seeing that the Orca Campfire chat is now closed, some people here would like an Orca world and I'm running a number of AltME worlds anyway, I started one. If you would like an account, ask me here, or log in as guest. The world name is Orca and the guest password is guest |
Anton 13-Jul-2006 [344] | So next I would like to know how to update those afore-mentioned Orca webpages with the new Orca direction. |
Kaj 13-Jul-2006 [345] | No need to mention your mail address if it's in your account information here |
