[Syllable] The free desktop and server operating system family

Kaj 16-Nov-2005 [458x2] | We have a USB stack, but few specific USB drivers, so only USB mice and mass storage devices like memory sticks are supported right now |
There are drivers for UHCI, OHCI and EHCI USB 2, so all controllers should work
Kaj 13-Dec-2005 [460x6] | We released Syllable 0.6.0: |
http://syllable.org | |
The most important enhancement is a new rendering architecture for the video framework. The contents of windows are now backbuffered in the video memory on the video card, so they can be restored much faster. Amiga smart window refresh, anyone? :-) But this time it's with hardware support
While the user interface was already fast and smooth for relatively simple windows content, this also makes the experience smooth for complicated windows that would otherwise take noticable time to redraw, like web browser windows. Currently available on nVidia GeForce, Ati Radeon and SiS video drivers
There were also a lot of bug fixes and small enhancements to drivers and applications, further approaching a stable platform. Syllable should now boot on a lot more machines
We're now officially out of the 0.5.x series, which were meant to update our base technology and were thus fairly chaotic. We now have a good development platform for the innovations that we have been planning
Pekr 14-Dec-2005 [466x2] | Kaj, does Syllable use any particular library for gfx? I don't remember what you said. am I right you considered even agg, but then your gfx guru decided to go his own way? |
that smart buffering thing sounds interesting. Maybe similar aproach could be taken for View :-) ... well, one day ... maybe :-)
Kaj 14-Dec-2005 [468x3] | We have just a few rendering functions, but they're deeply integrated with the video driver framework, now with backbuffering. When we add more functions they may need the same deep integration for the best result, and then we can't use an existing library directly. Of course, you can still use existing libraries on top of our framework, but that's not the most efficient solution |
For example, I just ported SDL_gfx, a fairly powerful drawing library, but it's on top of SDL and SDL is ported on top of our system
View is also not the most efficient because it has to be portable
Pekr 14-Dec-2005 [471x2] | let's hope new blitting at least is in the pipeline for View ...... |
Kaj - can I boot Syllable from CD or do I have to have partition for it?
Kaj 14-Dec-2005 [473] | No, just boot the live CD to try it. Only there's no live CD for 0.6.0 yet, and the 0.5.7 one is taken offline until that happens |
Pekr 14-Dec-2005 [474] | ok, so I will wait .... Syllable seems to be getting better and better. I will give it a try around Christmas, when I have some time to not work, but enjoy :-) |
Kaj 14-Dec-2005 [475] | I will put a notice here when the live CD is out |
Kaj 18-Dec-2005 [476x2] | I released a binary package of the new Orca version 0.0.22 for Syllable: |
http://kamidake.other-space.com/display_entry.php?id=336
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [478x2] | We just released Syllable 0.6.0a, an update to fix a number of small issues with 0.6.0: |
http://syllable.org | |
Pekr 28-Dec-2005 [480] | Kaj - there is a OSNews article, which suggests SkyOS is better route, because it is backed by commercial company or so ... did not agree, but I have not yet read the discussion ... |
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [481] | Ah, I'll have a look |
Pekr 28-Dec-2005 [482] | http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=11085 |
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [483x2] | There are those people who seem to think that all good comes from companies, however small and whatever their track record |
Well, I'm such a small company, so does that count? :-)
Pekr 28-Dec-2005 [485] | :-) |
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [486] | Of course, Linus has never been a company. He was a student in a smelly dorm room with the curtains shut all day while developing Linux |
JaimeVargas 28-Dec-2005 [487] | Why is software backed by a corporation a better route? Because in theory you can sue them, and decision makers are usually lazy and techically illetarate, so they prefer to have legal ways to assert themselves in case of need. I think thats part of the reason that RedHat succeed with Linux. |
Pekr 28-Dec-2005 [488] | Kaj - I will open group for syncing here, I want to gather some links ... few weeks ago you had interesting comments here (groove etc.) - would you find some links to submit? |
Graham 28-Dec-2005 [489] | I'm not sure that is the case. |
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [490] | Eh, what did I say? :-) |
Graham 28-Dec-2005 [491] | If you want to contact someone, a company will have phones etc ... |
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [492x2] | Oh yes, I gave some overview that isn't readily available in such a compact form |
I have phones... | |
Graham 28-Dec-2005 [494] | developers here sometimes disappear for ages before resurfacing. |
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [495] | Companies sometimes do as well, especially in Amiga circles ;-) |
Pekr 28-Dec-2005 [496] | hmm, now consider RT .... from language development pov, open-source could be better, you say that from decision makers, the company could be better. My experience with top management is, that they want some references, case studies, etc., where RT is completly loosing ... I don't buy that their customers don't want them to tell what company uses their products. I have never seen anything like that ... |
Graham 28-Dec-2005 [497] | Kru, is your phone listed on the syllable pages ? |
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [498] | Kru? |
Graham 28-Dec-2005 [499] | Kaj :) |
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [500] | Brent just posted his phone number on our public mailing list... |
Graham 28-Dec-2005 [501] | only two letters out :) |
Pekr 28-Dec-2005 [502] | at least here in CZ, or maybe it is more of an EU nature, simply managers want references or case studies. Last slides of most product presentations is - who else does use it? Pages full of logos. It is even usual, that during the contract phase, parties agree to even accept some reference business trips from other parties. It works, managers feel safe, that they are not alone using the solution ... well, marketing ... |
Rebolek 28-Dec-2005 [503] | Pekr: maybe their customers are mafia and/or military and these organistaions are very typically shy of their activities ;o))) |
Kaj 28-Dec-2005 [504x2] | To call him for server performance during the holidays. That's dedication, isn't it? |
My phone number is readily available from WhoIs, I guess
Graham 28-Dec-2005 [506] | Dedication, but for companies, that is the norm. |
Pekr 28-Dec-2005 [507] | AMD would be cool reference for IOS - but well, RT's site sucks anyway .... not business oriented :-) |
