I think you could position Syllable with two major values:

1. Do you want to surf secure? Use Syllable, no virus etc will work

2. Do you want to avoid observation? Use Syllable, no root-kit etc. 
will work.

As goverments are moving to 1984 style, these two aspects will become 
more and more important.

Server now uses the Linux 2.6.22.1 kernel, so it has the new DeviceScape 
wireless stack

I haven't integrated the userspace tools yet, though; that's planned 
for the second release. I don't know yet how easy it will be then 
to configure wireless, without graphical tools

We definitely want to be something like "the Apple of open source". 
And unlike Apple, freedom is very important, too ;-)

Do you mean the specs? They're not much use right now. We need code, 
as simple as that

I doubt there are any porting specs, because little work has been 
done on it yet

The porting API of R3 isn't quite settled yet, and the library would 
have to be compiled for Syllable. Not a big problem.

There is a chance that we could even use the Linux library to begin 
with. Syllable is that compatible

As I understand it the library is a sort of a "VM" and you need to 
write an interpeter for the platform.

And I thought I read that it was ported to mac os X so the specs 
for the interpreter must be there

Nope. The library is a shared library like a .so or .dll, and later 
statically linked like a .o or .lib.

It is not a VM.

The method, yes. The api and specs, still in process.

They're the two standard methods of providing libraries. Principally, 
they should be Syllable libraries, but we're so much using the same 
toolchain that we can sometimes use Linux libraries directly

Back to syllable...what niche are you looking to fill that is not 
served by ms or linux or mac stc.

A native Syllable library would be better public relations :)

It will take us another decade to get there, but we are serious about 
producing a system with a significant potential

Linux is mostly failing on the desktop. Syllable Desktop is a system 
based on many of the same open-source components to correct that

No, but suppose we reach world domination together, we would then 
have to bicker about who was the essential component :-)

I use linux but I'm always hitting a wall and going back to windows 
for some tasks. Plus it seems too big and bloated.

If you have experienced Amiga, you know why Linux is failing, and 
you should have some idea why Syllable has a much better chance

Even using rebol on linux is annoying to me

The people in Syllable have also gone through this process. Eventually 
we each decided that instead of spending all our time getting Linux 
to work, we could also spend it building a complete new system

I gave up on Amiga a few years ago. maybe its back in new form. I'm 
off to try the live cd.

Although Linux is relatively successful on servers (just not as successful 
as its proponents want to believe), we have also introduced Syllable 
Server this year, a Linux built in the same way as Syllable Desktop 
to offer a complete network platform

Kaj, I never knew about the "Amiga-Syllable" Connection. I better 
check it out again.

Contrary to popular opinion I've been a bit careful to hold back 
on promotion, because Syllable is just a guest here

Syllable started out as a plan for an Amiga clone halfway the nineties. 
Not much code had been written yet when it changed into a unique 
OS. After a few rewrites, large parts of it were modeled on BeOS

I thought the Syllable screenshot running a DOS emulator running 
my Atari 8-bit emulator running a Boing ball demo in the Amiga group 
here would be a giveaway :-)

Yeah, that's pretty obvious! I've been thinking about getting a PS3 
to run as a linux box (for fun mostly as I do most of my work on 
a XP PC). Personally I think there's potential in that marketplace 
for a solid OS. Any thoughts?
