Making money with Rebol?

 [1/18] from: webmaster::siliconspecies::com at: 12-Feb-2001 15:55

Anyone making money with Rebol? Just curious. Seems hard since basically no one looking to hire even has a clue as to what Rebol is and are already well entrenched in other solutions. Educating a potential client on the advantages of a new solution is difficult at best. Any ideas? Jeff

Hi Jeff, yes, REBOL has done very well for me. Of course, I made money doing the Dummies book but the longterm profits are coming from the e-commerce systems written in REBOL that pull in orders everyday. It's a quick and wonderful development tool. --Ralph Roberts

I have not made money, but Rebol has helped me update over 100 web pages from a data base. One change and all pages and there links, pictures are updated. One hour update job is now done in 30 seconds. Greg

I could be trite and say Carl, Jim, Jeff, Holger, Bo etc etc. Whilst making money is very important in as much as we all need to pay to provide food & shelter as well as luxury goods & services, should it really be of any worthwhile consideration when trying to learn & understand & develop "a better means of expression" i.e REBOL. If you are only in it for the money then why not just learn Visual Basic and go and provide customised Microsoft Office Applications for Businesses, you have a lifetimes work of maintaining, upgrading & de-bugging. Charles Moore of FORTH fame once said there are 3 things you cn try to do with a computer; 1. Try to be famous - this is very unlikely! 2. Try to get rich - this is very hard! 3. Try to have fun - this is easy! REBOL will become more popular and there will be people who will earn their living with REBOL, but just now the language is still very young compared to it's competitor languages and withouth the backing of an industry giant to steamroller it over everybody, but REBOL will succeed because it is simply a much easier and more powerful means of expression. My advice, Get a day job to pay the bills, try to get REBOL work if & when you can, what the heck! learn & use REBOL just for the fun of it, you'll be doing yourself a favour. Mark Dickson

I think I've heard it said before that success in life is all about finding something you love to do and then making that your day job. -jeff

I hadn't heard that saying before, but I 'love' it!!! I heard another saying that you should do best what you do best and don't worry, the money will follow. Rebol isn't just a language, or even just a new way to operate the Web. Rebol is also a passion which radiates from the Console or View or Application as you open them. The elegance of the truth and beauty in its design (which is alive) relieves the stresses which modern technology had intruded into our lives. Steve Shireman

First try saving your company money. Just ask your boss for some extra work, solving a few problems that everyone else has neglected. Use a little observation, and discernment. Then just write the scripts in rebol and solve the business problem. That's all I did, and from that small beginning (1.5 years ago), I now have 147 smallish REBOL scripts in production and 2 people in training (REBOL/web-development/training/internship). To be honest, we are using other tools, like Perl, Python, MacroMedia, Web-Objects, Java, etc. But, there is nothing wrong with using REBOL... ... now that we are solving problems and saving the company money! It you try the above suggestions, and you are still not happy.. maybe it's time to get a "REAL JOB" at EDS. see http://www.eds.com -DJV- Disclaimer: The above remarks are the personal observations of the writer (DJV) and may not necessarily reflect the opinions of my employer.

I'm here in Seattle hitting the job fairs and having interviews with software companies and professionals, I have yet to meet one person that has even heard of Rebol. Well that is until they meet Me that is.... 8-). Man, am I ever glad I followed what Carl was up to after he left C=, and now I can use MySQL too!!! It don't get much better.. Bill. Doug is right here, businesses buy solutions to business problems. Look around, small business do not have the money for IT departments, but they do for time saving solutions. Find any growing small business, and the story is usually the same. the owner works excessively long hours. Promise to save them an hour or more a week by automating something and you've got a sale, odds are the same solution will appeal to the next small business you approach too.

Doug, when EDS opens an office in Brisbane, I'll consider it. :-) Cheers, Allen K

I know where you are coming from. I actually ran across this same situation when I used to write Visual BASIC. VB was still young, and while it was one of the fastest ways to write an application at the time, people still thought it must be written in C. By the time I learned C well enough, Visual BASIC was largely accepted by the masses. Where I work now, I actually got hired because I was a C programmer, though I haven't written a single line of it on the job. The problem is that your prospective clients are pre-educated. In order to break in, you would need to re-educate them, or conform to thier belief system. This relates to pulling thier teeth, or pulling your own. Not much fun either way. One alternative is to get uneducated clients and educate them. Small businesses tend to be uneducated about computerized solutions. Some businesses spend days on simple repetitive reports, just because they do not know how easily such things can be automated. Many still dont even have a web presence. Yes, true they usually dont have much money, but that means you just sell them smaller solutions. If you want to work for a company, at this time you probably wont get hired because your a REBOL programmer. That will probably take a few more years, unless you live near me. I am in the process of wrapping up a Palm OS based data collection system. While not picky about what language you use on the server end, REBOL of course has numerous benifits. This system should provide the REBOL community some system integration opportunities. I will tell more at a later time. By using REBOL, I have probably doubled my productivity, at the same time doubling my capabilities. To provide twice the solution for half the cost, is a treasured position to be in. --Ryan Jeff Rubin wrote:

Well..... I'm a programmer. That's how I make my money. I do most of my programming in rebol. And that's a pleasure. -- Tim Johnson ----------- Of all manifestations of power, restraint impresses the most. -Thucydides

Luckily, I just started with a company whose web site was an afterthought until now. I am their new web developer. I am pushing hard to purchase and install /Command on the web server. At least they'll let me use REBOL for the corporate intranet. slow and steady... -Ryan

I have been doing about 70% Rebol at my job for the last 2 months. We wrote a Domain Language to XML compiler. How did this come about? I casully left a copy of Dr Dobbs article about Rebol on my desk. My boss picked it up. Stayed up all night playing with dialects and decided to use it. Off-course it helps having a true hacker for a boss :) Regards David ===== please reply to: [david--vydra--net]
