annotated shared system object?

 [1/14] from: jason:cunliffe:verizon at: 3-Sep-2002 18:30

Is there a browsable, annotated rebol system object anywhere on-line? Hoping for a community [wiki/vanilla] resource. A shared site which can complement RT's internal docstrings with rebolers own pearls of wisdom/content/context/notes. Two examples: FlashMX undocumented features at Chattyfig http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/flashcoders-wiki/index.php?Flash MX features PHP site http://www.php.net/manual/en/features.file-upload.php ./Jason

Good idea. I think that Codeconscious could be a starting point, perhaps Brett could add editable fields to his pages. --- Ciao Romano

Hi Romano and Jason, I'd thought (dreamt) similarly Jason. Could be really useful for View too. I sort of envisaged a compressed local resource available and updatable from the command line for Core or for View via a popup. Update deltas sent via email or by posting to a CGI. For bonus marks an ability to merge multiple site "knowledge bases" into the active console help. Might be as simple as: system/options/home {The home directory.} system/view/screen-face {The face object that represents the window of the current REBOL instance.} Or something a little more complex which could provide "equivalent to" and see also . Such a informationbase could then be browsed in something like anamonitor so that the current value and the comments/annotations are shown at the same time. Actually I feel something like this could be useful for script documentation as well, by providing a glossary of terms. For blue sky idea imagine a script editor that has a description of a word when you move your cursor over it: repeat person employees [ <-- Employees: "Array of employee records." .... Romano thanks. I'm slowly converting 90% of the content for the site into a new dialect so that I can add meta information and generate the whole thing with some useable navigation. At the same time, I'm editing quite a bit of the content to be a little more polished. I haven't fully settled on a content dialect(s) yet. Formatted Document vs Structured Information issue. I also plan to redesign the site because the navigation rollovers (cute but ultimately purposeless idea of mine) bloat my site log. Regards, Brett.

Brett, Romano Your plan to turn CodeConscious into a 'service' sounds great. The popup code lookup would be wonderful. ok I want to go ahead and host and build a complementary site in Vanilla. Hopefully that will help develop tools + shared resource of rebol knowledge, documentation with open access between other sites/services. motivation: - important to improve global web/google access to rebol knowledge - test platform for shared publishing between sites - rebol resource built in rebol [vanilla] I like Vanilla for this project because it allows one to dynamically add metadata and develop cluster of smart filters [snips and dynasnips] to act upon that data. - bridge frameworks [html, flashmx, jabber, rebsites, rebol/core rebol/view, xml-rpc, email, ??] - push Vanilla futher - give back somethign useful to the community ./Jason

I think Volker's got something brewing that might be along the lines of what you're after. Check with him if he doesn't jump in here. --Gregg

I hope you can add a way to add user comments and new arguments to your pages. --- Ciao Romano

Hmm, not sure if it is related. I have a patched easy-vid with integrated editor. the current page can be edited and saved and reviewed. that is a shorter cycle than goto editor, find line in loong text, edit, start viewer, select page . i call it e-snippets because i want to collect my snippets with it. its very good for short examples with a bit explanation :) but this thread is more about cgi/server/wiki/vanilla stuff? hmm, it could work as browser/editor? easy-vid- format is more or less make-doc, if vanilla uses it, it can serve make-doc to easy-vid and also generate html for normal browsers. in easy-vid it could be edited. but make-doc would need some wiki-link-extension?

Yes..please. That's the virtue of vanilla or other wikiblogs. Here's one I just found for adding comments: http://www.reboltech.com/library/html/cgicomment.html ./Jason

Good luck. Sounds worthwhile.

I've tried using Vanilla. I've got to admit though I didn't really work out how to use it properly, as I couldn't figure out the results of my actions. No doubt a failure on my part. :^)

Ambitious. :^) Regards, Brett.

pages. Yes I would like to add various interactive aspects to codeconscious.com. I would also like to make the content of codeconscious.com available to multiple user-agents (at minimum HTML, View). Some of these is dreaming, some of it I will achieve once I've converted my data. Regards, Brett.

Hi, that's a great idea! I never thought about this possibility. There is this dictonary.r reblet that's a great idea too. But it never took off IIRC. Something like this for the system's object might be nice too. We have so much information but it's totaly fragmented and nowhere consolidated. I have to say that even using IOS doesn't help so much. Several conferences, experts, bug reports etc. What I'm missing is information integration... But that's an other topic. Robert

Is there a way to dump out the system tree - just to get all the paths of the system object. I've got some cgi scripts that could be used for annotating (with some massaging...). and I'd like to have a go at this one... As input, what I need is something like this: system system/version system/build system/product system/options system/options/home .. system/options/cgi system/options/cgi/server-software system/options/cgi/server-name .. etc better still, can I generate this on the fly? I tried dumping the system object directly, but I got *far* too much stuff. regards - Luke

I'm working on such app...I'll release it soon. regards, Cyphre

Hi Luke, << Is there a way to dump out the system tree - just to get all the paths of the system object. >> Romano's Anamonitor script is probably along the lines of what you want. I have a similar tool, with a different GUI approach, but it's not available publicly at this point. So, yes, you can use reflection to get just about any piece of info you want in REBOL. --Gregg
