You could use a binary! and use the characters #{00} and #{01};
then you can easily use boolean operations. This is still somewhat
a waste of memory, but as long as we're talking a couple thousand
chars noone would really notice it. :)
>> #{0001010100} xor #{0101000000}
== #{0100010100}
