Minimal X installation is not enough. You would need a running X server to
connect to. Font rendering is done by the server, not by the X libraries.
The only viable alternative is to use a completely different font
engine, but then there is the cross-platform issue, plus rendered text
would look different than in X. Perhaps in a future version...
