Holger, When you finally get to unicode, perhaps the following free open source c library will be worth looking at. Now I'm not trying to hurry you up or anything like that. :>) Louis http://www-124.ibm.com/icu/ International Components for Unicode Documentation Overview In the International Components for Unicode, there are several categories of functionality: Low-level Unicode/Resource Attributes: ("common" library) Utilities for Unicode Character and String Handling Unicode String Class Conversion Interface Locale handling Resource Bundles High-level Unicode Internationalization: ("i18n" library) Text Boundary Analysis (Word/Sentence Break Iterators) Collation (Sorting) Formatting =97 Date/Time/Numbers/Currency Transliteration Layout Engine for Complex Text Takes runs of styled Unicode text and builds data structures for display and printing. (A rasterizer is not included.) Character Set Information As part of the ICU project, we are collecting mapping tables between Unicode and legacy codepages from actual implementations (operating systems). We make them available as a service to everyone. The tables are provided in a format for use with ICU, as well as a format developed by the Unicode Consortium. See our charset page. Unicode-stdio ("ustdio") library This is a library with input/output functions similar to the C stdio library. It is currently not supported but provided as-is. ICU uses the Java model for locale-hierarchical resource bundles. Multiple locales can be used at a time. ICU is thread-safe: Different ICU service objects can be used by different threads. For more details, see the (draft) User Guide and the API References below. ICU4C (ICU) is written in C and C++, and ICU4J is written in Java=99.
