windows time-savers

I *knew* that one had to exist, I just had no clue that the Windows-Start
button had a (useful) use at all!
Enjoy!!

fyi: I just got an email back from Stan SpielBusch, the developer of File-Ex
http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/fx95summ.html
Stan says:
I will be working on the NT version starting in January, as my other
projects will be winding down soon.

Hello,
a few of you guys shared your favorites time savers... well, here is mine...
I discovered this a month ago and wonder how I ever lived without it!
visit
http://www.protonfx.com/dirkey
this little tool inserts itself into ANY os browser and lets you define 10
favorite folders.
Ctrl-Alt-1 defines the first one (when in a file browser or windows
explorer)
Ctrl-1 recalls that directory!
you can define keys 0-9 this way. I never browse any paths anymore...
thanks to someone else on this list browsing my programming directory is now
as simple as
windows start key+e
Ctrl-4
zzzap where there!
To make it more obvious how usefull it is, is that these shortcuts are
accessible from ALL applications using standard windows file browsers... so
working on a project in all of my tools is always a keystroke away .... in
my case I usually go from my editor to explorer to photoshop to my rebol app
and I need all apps to look at the same directory so I don't have to
re-browse every time I re-open an app just for a little change! :-)

[Win95/98 only, but NT/2000 in the works]
On Mac I used something similar but can't remember its name.
indispensible..imo
These context-oriented tools avoid endless upstairs-downstairs repeated
nonsense when navigating file open/save/browse directories. File-Ex is very
smart, learning custom settings for each application and remembering a big
list:
recent files, recent folders, favorite files, favorite folders etc.
These *simple* tricks should be default by now, built into EVERY OS.
When I get round to it, I will try to implement the same features into an
improved REBOL request-file.

2 mins ago I stumbled on this:
windows/start + r !!
..perfect when the last you ran was REBOL [and it crashed] :-)

That is *cute* but that is all that it seems to be. Not to be critical, but
it seems that if they were looking to improve file browsing they might
include some graphical way to set the shortcuts. ;-( Correct me if I am
wrong, but I don't see any way to browse to the desired folder.
Enjoy!!

Hi Ammon,
well, I know you were speaking of the tool Jason suggested, but the tool I
talked about (dirkey) ALREADY works on w2k for sure :-)
thats what I currently use

actually that's a feature ....
you set the shortcuts RIGHT IN the MS browsers! yep just pressing on Ctrl
+ Alt + 1 instantly sets the memory. So you can change the shorcuts while
you browse... you don't have to open the dirkey tool to set it up... This
makes it 100% transparent...
It IS a feature. If I had to open the dirkey app evrytiome I wanted to
change the path and then Rebrowse to the path I wanted to save, then I
wouldn't see dirkey as being as usefull...

See there you go again, don't throw anything out until its points have been
proven!
Thanks!!
