ANN: Back-It!

 [1/3] from: D::Weyand::gmx::de at: 14-Dec-2004 11:30

A new REBgame called "Back-It!" is available for REBOL/View, REBOL/IOS at http://www.TGD-Consulting.de/Download.html or visit the REBsite ( http://www.TGD-Consulting.de/index.r ). Back-It! is a "Backgammon"-style game. You can play Back-It! with two players or against the computer. On slow machines - with only a few REBOL-hertz - you have to deactivate the coin animation (About/Options) to keep the smooth game-play. Happy reboling and enjoy playing Back-It! It looks great, nice graphics. One minor point on the look. Western backgammon boards have alternate colors for the points. It was strangely disconcerting playing with all the points one color. I think mediterranean boards have all 24 points one color, but not western ones. But I sorry to report the play is very weak. I gammoned it five times out of five. It made some very basic strategy mistakes at the beginning. If course, it is not trivial to produce a backgammon game that does play well. All the top games (Gnu Backgammon, Snowie, Jellyfish) have highly trained neural networks for most plays, plus highly tuned algorithms for cube and match play, and megabtyes of bear-off database for the endgame. Perhaps you could develop it as a FIBS client (www.fibs.com). FIBS clients are basically GUI interfaces to a Telnet dialog. And most of them are not very good. Nice to see all the other games you have. Sunanda.
