How does the Rebol licensing work exactly.

Could somebody just clarify Rebol licensing for me. My understanding is that Rebol/Core is free (as in beer). I can use it for whatever I like, commercial or not. Is this correct? Rebol/View, on the other hand, is free for non-commercial use. What exactly is commercial use. Does this mean software for sale, or any use in a commercial environment. To give a concrete example. Say I want to create a bug tracking databsae for internal use by myself and the other members of my team. If i just use Rebol/Core as a CGI server, with the UI made up of html forms only then that is no problem. Could I then sell my database for profit without paying royalties? If I then replace the browser with a Rebol/View front end, what now? Can I continue to use the bug database internally, but I cannot sell it without purchasing the SDK?

And then you have SDK at $250 which will give ou the right to sell anywat with all the cool pro features. --Maarten

without purchasing the SDK? In general (and take with a grain of salt), Rebol HQ wants to make money when you make money with Rebol. So if you're only saving time/effort and there was no profit made by this, only savings in costs, there's no royalty. If you start selling an application that involves Rebol software in any way, you should pay Rebol HQ royalties based on your sales. IIRC, if you give away your software or it's open source, there's no royalty (as you're being altruistic). IIRC, SDK price includes royalties based on a small number of sales in it's price. BUT! Please take the above as just rumour and hearsay. It's best to contact Rebol HQ (I believe it's best to contact Cindy or Carl directly), and get the full details. I hope that helps a bit. Andrew and Ged, The licensing changed a while back to be less restrictive, but if you have a specific set of circumstances, you should contact RT directly to make sure you're on the same page with them. The SDK now has a very nice license that says you don't need to pay royalties *unless* you expose the REBOL API in your app. That is, if your app allows the user to write or execute REBOL code directly. -- Gregg
