Yes, looks very promising. I look forward to get my hands on it :-)) and test all this. I hope we will get some more Rebol-Internals documentation. Hey, Rebol-Internals would be a good book title... Robert

Hi List I have rebol/view/pro. Am I concerned with this SDK or is it only for /COMMAND users? Patrick ----- Original Message ----- From: "rishi" <[rishi--adelphia--net]> To: <[rebol-list--rebol--com]> Sent: Tuesday, December 03, 2002 7:15 AM Subject: [REBOL] time to read

No, I don't think so.

Hi Pat, p> I have rebol/view/pro. p> Am I concerned with this SDK or is it only for /COMMAND users? It's something new. I'm guessing there might be a /Command version of the SDK forthcoming at some point also. It looks like /Pro contains most of what you find in /Command, less database access. -- Gregg

When looking at the /View kernel it seemes to imply that 'sound will be released as a REBOL/View feature. Sadly, there's no hint of giving /View users shell access. IIRC REBOL is developed in ANSI C and although Jan made a little post about this issue a week or so ago, I can't help wondering how hard it'd be to include stdlib.h and allow people to merely use the system() function. Oh well, there is little point in persuing this further, it's just that I'd really like to see REBOL grow among the grassroots and I think /View with shell access (and preferably sound too) is a must for that to happen. The only somewhat "practical" way to circumvent the lack of shell access seems to be writing a minimalistic TCP server in e.g. Java that sits on a port and executes strings sent to it from localhost. Either that or having every bloke in the world registering View/Pro or registering a SDK and cashing out with $1000 + another $100 per additional platform. REBOL is a fab piece of technology. It's a fab piece of software for corporations and organisations with money. For the others though... Enough ranting about RT's business practices though and here's hoping that they'll give us shell access in view at least next X-Mas... /Lennart Fridén ([lennart--nylen--biz]) The World is not sane so why should I be?

Carl is slowly bending under the collective wishes of the developer community and freeing up stuff as can be seen from the SDK documents. More voices in agreement with these sentiments will surely help this to happen faster. --Graham http://www.compkarori.com/cerebrus/index.html This hound hunts down spam!

I'm glad to hear that. I'd hate to have to reimplement REBOL or a language similar in concept to REBOL just because of the license...:-D /Lennart Fridén ([lennart--nylen--biz]) The World is not sane so why should I be?

I would add mine. I have been looking for ways to do some little things at work with REBOL, hoping that when people see them they will ask, "What tool did you use to make that?" I have had a couple ideas, but have been stopped by the lack of shell access. Shell access might be a nice gift to the no-cost version of REBOL (CORE and VIEW) that would give them more uses, and more uses would be a sales tool for the priced modules of REBOL.
