"BeOS" and Palm

 [1/13] from: ryan:christiansen:intellisol at: 17-Aug-2001 10:28

As someone pointed out earlier, Palm purchased all of Be, Inc.'s, intellectual property, which includes the BeOS and BeIA. Palm has already stated they do not plan to continue developing the BeOS. Here is the current situation: 1. REBOL runs on BeOS. 2. BeIA will run on Palm (i.e. BeIA will be PalmOS) 3. REBOL does not run on BeIA (BeIA includes better networking stack, etc.) So what has to be done? REBOL Technologies needs to contact Palm about porting REBOL to the BeIA/PalmOS platform. Then we can all begin making some real money writing applications for Palm handheld devices. Ryan C. Amen, brother! I have long dreamed of REBOL on the Palm platform. It is so PERFECT in concept (as opposed to being technically feasible<g>). --ralph

I am sure we will be seeing it soon. [ryan--christiansen--intellisol--com] wrote:

This is actually significantly great news! If RT scoots on this, they could be premier development system for the new Palm OS. This could RT's big break. --Ryan Ryan Cole wrote:

Hi, What about Rebol on eZaurus w/Amiga/DE ? I would prefer that to writing Rebol code with Graffiti ! At least the eZaurus will have an embedded physical keyboard. What we would really need is Rebol/View on a handheld, being anything from Palm to WindowsCE to Amiga/DE... but it would really be great ! Chris

To best of my knowledge there is already Rebol port to Taos Intent/Elate (system behind DE) so it should work.. I have not downloaded it for testing though (I purchased DE SDK some time a´go).

Old palms are too small.. new ones (not yet made) are unknownts.. And... Remember.. Sharp Zaurus is the first released DE running machine.. :) Joanna PS: Pitty to see BeOS go, it was nice.... I hope it gives Palm some good inspiration.

A very prudent statement considering they are a $2B company vs. a $330B company. But even at that, $2B gives them much deeper pockets than Be ever had. So even though the obvious reason for the purchase was to gain multimedia capabilities, is it possible by any stretch of the imagination, that they would put some effort into marketing BeOS on the desktop? Just my idealistic hope that technical excellence could one day overcome market realities. Ken.

I am looking forward to your Rebol/View Reb site. I'm kind of hoping the world wide reb might become the next generation napster. chaz At 05:48 AM 8/18/01 +0300, you wrote:

Hi, I think that Holger is the person responsible/dedicated to Amiga ports. I am not sure how /Core is done for Elate, but I wonder how "fast" is that going to be. I don't expect RT coding it in native VP code. Rebol for AmigaDE is the same as Rebol for Java - it would bring us to some platforms we currently don't run under. On the other hand, - if AmigaDE is not native to the platform (and as far as Zaurus is concerned, - it is not), it is simply hosted and it means that that Rebol is direct competitor to AmigaDE here. RT however has a little different business model, although I know very little about it :-) RT needs money and money come from corporate sphere. View engine lacks few capabilities, as some native engine to text formatting (e.g. separate specification via dialect, not mixed with text itself), and probably proper font engine. IIRC QNX and Intent use Bitstream, - probably the best one on the market ... But ... I think that we will get there one day. It just needs time, or so I believe it :-) As I expressed to Carl - REBOL OS would be probably the nicest OS ever created - VID coding is very soul pleasant :-). Dialects are cool - still ONE language, while concentrating on domain specific expressions .... Cheers, -pekr-

When I tried it (one year ago, I think), it was 25% slower than the linux version. When translated, it was bigger too (300k vs 200k IIRC). Hmm, that's not all that bad, is it? /View figures would be more interesting though :-) -pekr-
