Well, I think REBOL has answered a lot of questions as to what it's
official product line is going to be in the near future, anyway...
http://www.rebol.com/products.html
But the product descriptions do not give me enough information, especially
about /Express. Sometimes you need more than words, you need pictures. What
does a link client's interface look like, for example?

REBOL/Core/Pro
/Core/Pro combines REBOL/Core with shell and library modules. This will be available
on approximately 25 platforms.
Price: $29.95
Availability: Q2 2001
It's official, there is a God... (provided one of those 25 platforms is
Linux libc6 ;))
:)

The current RT website content will surely evolve. I was told so on Express
conference ;-)
But for the time being - there is old good -pekr- :-) with his set of some
of View based interfaces ...

So, REBOL/Link/Pro is View with shell access??
And what are the library modules?
And which one combines View with ODBC?

View with ODBC? Hmm - such product seems to be missing, although it was
planned IIRC :-) But who needs ODBC anymore once you can have library
access? :-) Well - maybe there should be some kind of Link/Command .....

I don't think a language can compete in business enterprise if it doesn't
include components concept and accepts standards like activex or java
applet. So does Rebol intend to do something soon about that ?

Awesome price structure in my opinion and the selection is awesome.
Especially at this point in the evolution. I can't wait for /Link if its as
cool as it sounds I'll be making a very cool $49.00 purchase because I want
that shell access as well. So where is /Link. Bring it on.... :)

If they compile /Link for use on the BeOS like they have with /View, I will
be VERY happy. Finally, with shell access, I will be able to become a BeOS
developer using the language I love and write applications for the
operating system I love. Bring it on!

I hope they won't, neither ActiveX (use your web-browser to access them by
feeding it a web-page generated from a Rebol script) nor java applets are as
nice and cool as Rebol. Applets are not used very often on the client and
who needs java on the server? Anyway, I don't want to start a
this-is-better-than-that
discussion but please don't mix in bad concepts
into a good solution. If you would like to use java, go and use it... Robert

I agree with Robert. For example, I'm assessing REBOL's capabilities
in a business enterprise context exactly because I need something
completely different from the ActiveX/Java development paradigm. If I
need to use ActiveX or Java, experience tells me it's better to stick
with their dedicated development environments and tools, for better
or (more often) worse. Just so, you will find more bugs and tuning
problems than you'd like. :-(
Just my two cents (of Euro, of course :-)

I strongly disagree. ActiveX is something you should beetter steer
away from (IMHO), and REBOL is much better than Java anyway.
Considering the availability of REBOL /Pro versions, I think we
won't need all those ugly old languages anymore... :-)

Gabriele.

I didn't mean java is better than Rebol, if so I wouldn't go on with Rebol
:) I mean about Component concept, reusability with interface beetween
components and that works inside a browser (like flash for example). If you
want to offer an interactive chart for example , how would you do if you
don't have component ?

Hi, well there are two issues here:
1. Rebol/XYZ Browser plug-in-able
I think this is a must-have to make Rebol the killer language. Think about
being able to use the fat browsers as home for Rebol (SSL etc. can be used
than) and have the user see a real nice interface inside the browser... no
complaints like: Well, it looks nice but it's not standard, I want to use my
browser...
2. Component concepts / protocolls
Stuff like COM XYZ, JavaBeans, CORBA etc. are all component protocolls...
and it's always a all-or-nothing concept. Mixing all these is very hard (if
not impossible). So why use them? Just use the simple and straightforward
concept like SOAP or Rebol, or whatevery ASCII readable format you wish.
These can be translated quite easy. Robert

yes, I talked about it with jeff in Express conference. Current plug-in just
knows only how to start Rebol and few other minor things. I told openly RT that
it will not be used at all - we need the ability to live inside of browser
window, or ppl will regard us being proprietary technology ....
But I can imagine that implementing something like this is not probably ease ...
But as you stated - it would definitely BE killer app.

Absolutly agree here. Although I know why ppl want it - because of inner-OS IPC
(like Arexx on Amiga)
