[integration] [core] A big vote for REBOL/Core (was Re: Questions about the 'send' function)
[1/2] from: luke:marmaladefoo at: 9-Aug-2004 12:05
Dear all
Are these kernel functions (call, send/attach etc) that are
more advanced in View going to be put back into Core? Or
is Core going to be "retired" (that would be such a real
shame). If the functions are going back in, when can we
expect to see an updated Core executable?
As I see it, from an interoperability perspective, there is
little point in having the two running on two different
versions of the basic kernel functions.
From my point of view, REBOL is great back-end/server
functionality - so I'm a big fan of REBOL/Core - but the
GUI side in View is still a long way from providing
sufficiently powerful, easy-to-integrate basic functionality
that is expected in usable GUI apps that can be easily
adopted by ordinary users (treeview, menus, listview,
quality HTML display etc).
Good luck to the REBOL/View project, but I'm sticking to
Core.
Please lets keep them in step!
Regards
- Luke

I think we will see that happen. IMO RT has strong intention in keeping
them compatible. That is the basic problem we discussed here several
times already. While I would like to see one kernel + libraries
(components) aproach, others like all-in-one aproach, avoiding possible
dll hell
problem. RT seems to preffer latter, maybe even becase of
marketing reasons, not technological ones.
As you might know, looking at http://www.rebol.net or even
http://www.rebol.net/devel04.html, there are currently new projects
ongoing. RT released beta version of new Core, containing fully
asyncrhonous networking (done by cool guy Holger Kruse, who we miss here
desperately as well as we miss Jeff Kreis :-), new GC (garbage
collector) etc. Those are big changes, need some testing and will result
in Core 2.6 release, if I unerstand those things correctly.
So, if you know of some incompatibilities, you can log onto Rebol AltME
world, where developers meet and discuss your wishes with developers. It
is faster than here on ml and the channel is attended by Carl, so it
might get his attention sooner than here on ml ....

Yes, maybe currently not, but maybe you also seen projects like SurfNet
Detective - very attractive UI indeed. And Cyphre's styles pack contains
all of them - tree-view, list-view (VERY powerfull grid), menu,
context-menu, tab-panel, auto-resize etc. It is just a matter of time,
when View get's mature for full-blown GUI apps. But even View is in a
bit strange position. We were not fast enough to finish View 1.3 on-time
(last december), but I have to tell something here - I have strong trust
in ppl here. All ppl did fantastic work and some of them are already
rebol heros, at least for me :-) View 1.3 beta, which is downloadable,
is worth using instead of old 2.1. What is Carl waiting for probably is
AGG integration (and Cyphre does some magic here :-), which will replace
draw dialect and maybe then we will decide to go with vector based
styles, we will see .... I expect View 1.4 being a different beast.
Cheers,
